Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer

No, it's not any of those things.

It's not believable. He looks like he was built from a completely different species. Humanity wouldn't design a robot like that. Firstly, he's a stupid physical shape. The reason we have humanoid robots in media is because that's what we'll eventually actually make. Everything we design is made to be operated by humans, so for a robot to be helpful for anything beyond specific tasks, it needs to be human shaped and to be human-like in articulation and movement. Secondly, he has a screen and firmware bios that looks a good hundred years behind his robotics.

He isn't logical. He says he knows the docking is impossible, and yet it isn't.

Cute is a more subjective one, I don't think he's cute, he doesn't look or act cute.

I like the idea of provocative AI, I love that Siri appears to have a very dry sense of humor and light sarcasm, but TARS didn't work for me.

I'm all for humanoid robots ala droids. But I'm sick of cop out 'human' robot bullshit.

Heaven forbid a robot look like a robot.

Yeah fuck. If only The Terminator could have been as cool as TARS. :(

If only :(

How in the world could you hate on TARS. That shit was awesome.

Oh wait, it's in a movie made by Nolan so it's immediately the worst thing ever right?

Alright, for those who have read the EU book series, The Legacy of the Force: do you feel that
Darth Caedus
would've made a sinister villain if Legacy's story were used for Episode VII?

Wouldn't work. Caedus' worst moment involves Luke's wife and they didn't seem to have any desire to work that in.

I'm not saying they need fake skin and shit, I'm just saying a functional robot should be the shape of a human, with the same points of articulation, so they can do our house work, operate our cars, play against us in Street Fighter, beat eggs, etc.

If there were about 20 movies before he turns, certainly.

Eh, you could cut out the padded stuff, and since SW movies work in trilogies, you have more elbow room to work with. It would've been great to have him as a villain for this trilogy because you have both Harrison and Carrie reprising their roles, and the time period would coincide with the EU years. Legacy of the Force takes place 40 years after Return of the Jedi, and supposedly The Force Awakens takes place 30 years after ROTJ.

Or if you are going to design a robot that might have to traverse uneven terrain, don't use right angles.

Walking on flat sides like a Minecraft character. Ridiculous.

Such an awful series of books....very glad we never have to deal with that timeline again.

you got some ambition there.

I doubt even C-3po can do any housework, I mean look at those arms.

I like SoccerBot. Reminds me of the original film with all the very strange and wacky robots there were.

Yeah like that one box robot with the two feet that walked real super slowly.

I think it was in the background.

1. Stupid shape? If you didn't notice, the robots are able to reshape into many different configurations. Its default shape is the most compact form.

2. Specific tasks? You mean like taking control of a physical flight stick for manual docking? Or the many other things he did by changing his configuration. Two of the most notable for me was toppling over to move fast in the water and securing himself and protecting a crew member while the ship was being tossed.

3. Screen and bios? lol. I think you've been watching too many movies. Military hardware has extremely bare bones software. They cut out anything that's not needed or would increase complexity and resources required. There's no reason the bios would be anything other than text.

4. Not logical? That's a setting. 90% truth remember? Him saying "that's impossible!" is his 'emotional' reaction.

The initial trailer left me moderately hyped until I saw the impractical, non functional and dumb as shit light saber design. It's like some kind of ridiculous fan service to anime fans or some nonsense.

Then I watched the international trailer and SO MANY EMOTIONS!

Man, but if they went in a completely different route with Luke, and had him marry Mara, we could have gotten one of the best scenes from the books.

Legacy of the Force spoiler:
Jacen killing Mara as his trial in becoming a Sith.

Human form gives great limitations to robotics. TARS is about maximum functionality. And a screen to operate directly on is very functional.

International trailer? That fake one?

I still havent watch the prequels yet. Yea yea i hear they're bad. Did J.J. Abrams mention if anything from the prequels will be mentioned in the new trilogy? just dont want to miss a thing.

Cant believe YOU fell for that.

Well whatever. There are actually a lot of fake trailers, and I couldn't actually tell if that one was a fake as well. Some of the footage looks almost fan made, and some looks like it could have been recycled from the previous films. Regardless, it left more of an impression than the actual "legit" trailer.

I didn't really spend much time researching it either. I only watched the official trailer, and then when I was looking for it to link in an email, noticed the "international version", noticed that it was also relatively new as well and that it had scenes that could have been legitimate. I liked the official trailer, but that light saber is still stupid as hell.

1. Stupid shape? If you didn't notice, the robots are able to reshape into many different configurations. Its default shape is the most compact form.
And in none of those configurations did it ever look very comfortably functional. It always looked stupid, and out of place. It looked like it was always seconds from falling over.

Obviously you could argue it didn't fall over, but that would be completely missing the point, because it's a film, and they don't have to show the realistic repercussions of the design, but the implications of the design factor into how I perceived it.
2. Specific tasks? You mean like taking control of a physical flight stick for manual docking? Or the many other things he did by changing his configuration. More stupid shit. It's a robot, that can interface with the ship. Why is it using a stick? Why not plug an ether cable in and just have it do exactly what it wants, not having to worry about the articulation of its arm, or the response of the stick, or any number of absurd elements. Computers don't communicate by typing out emails with a physical keyboard, Interstellar has practically that mentality. I thought the scene was literally laughable, as in, I laughed.
3. Screen and bios? lol. I think you've been watching too many movies. Military hardware has extremely bare bones software. They cut out anything that's not needed or would increase complexity and resources required. There's no reason the bios would be anything other than text.
Oh yeah, a graphical interface is too much for the military, but the humor setting? Now that's certainly vital. Being able to display maps or biological scans while in strange places has no use, but knock knock jokes? That's what we really need.
4. Not logical? That's a setting. 90% truth remember? Him saying "that's impossible!" is his 'emotional' reaction.
No, it's obscenely bad writing.

I'm up for some fan trailers but when they try to pass themselves off as real so they can rake in the youtube hits (and ad money?) it changes the conversation for me.

Also it constantly amazes me how easily duped some people are on these fan trailers into believing it's real. Are these the same people who click strange links sent to their e-mail accounts?

You liked the fake trailer more than the real one? This is why we can't have nice things.

it looks like he should have taken his whole torso.

Killing Anakin was never part of the plan, the whole fight was a setup to test his abilities, to see if he was ready to become Sidious apprentice.

Dooku never knew Palpatine true intentions, he went along the plan and got a much different reward than he expected. This is actually what GL originally wrote for the script of RoTS (before Lee advised him to drop it because begging didn't seem to fit for the character nature.)

Palpatine: "Kill him. Kill him now."

Dooku: "You promised me immunity!"

Palpatine: "I lied."

I love the roller droid. Very fun with some whimsy and playfulness in the design. That's something Lucas was always great with, giving that fun cartoony nature to his droids and various creatures. This looks to capture that well.

I'm also still trying to really decipher how we were able to get into this whole racism debate anyway. I know some people are dumb as fuck but if you watched this trailer and all you can comment on is the race of a main character, you're lost and confused.

lmao, how anyone can watch this and think it's legit is unfathomable. Did you think EP7 was being made on a 100$ budget?

Can anyone tell me what editions of the movies exist on these dvds/blu-rays? Does it have ghost Hayden Christensen at the end of jedi?
