man nothing in here about Kylo's Shuttle eh?
The potential shenanigans with Dormitz and some ships with Hyperwave Comms are interesting to me. And Hyperwave Comms in general could be pretty good. I am pretty underwhelmed with the shuttle overall though. I'm still getting one, for reasons other than "I'll buy at least one of everything:" A) It looks cool, B) It comes with two Snapshots.
I was really hyped for it though but at the moment I am more hyped for some potential lists I am building for after I buy a second cheap Lambda from a guy next weekend than I am for the Upsilon.
Here's a link to the Upsilon preview article: https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2016/10/24/fanatical-devotion/
It underwhelms me, too. It's designed to be a support ship, but it's super expensive for being a support ship. More than 40 points after slapping a few upgrades on there is too much for a ship that won't be your main offensive weapon.
I've argued before that other ships designed to be supports — the Lambda Shuttle and the HWK-290 — were too expensive to be used as such, and those things start at 16 and 21 points respectively, paltry amounts compared to the Upsilon. The Upsilon is outrageous.
Sure, the Upsilon has 4 attack and 12 total hit points, but I'll bet it can't turn around and it maneuvers like a dog. It has no turret. It won't be an offensive force in this game, and you can't afford to spend more than a third of the points in your list on something that won't do much killing. Unfortunately, in this game, the support that support ships give isn't good enough to offset not running another attack ship or two.
Really the only exception to this has been Palpmobiles, and that's because Palpatine is just that good. And even then, it didn't really take over the metagame or anything. Other support uses, like running Vader on a Decimator or using Kyle Katarn to up someone's PS to 12, are only effective because the ships they're on have turrets, making them an offensive threat on their own merit and not only a support ship.
For X-Wing to have true support ships, they'd have to cost about 10 points, IMO. And when you do that, you can't design the ship to be overwhelming when spammed, so a 10-point HWK with its weaksauce 1 attack would work, but an Upsilon with 12 hit points and 4 attack wouldn't. The focus of a support ship should be support abilities, not giving good stats to the support ship, but FFG seems to try designing ships to do both — and then it does neither well.
