Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

If you can tolerate the potential character / universe restarts and such, the nightly unstable builds will make a true believer out of anyone. There's so much stuff that it's actually a little daunting to sort it all out a year after. It's not like Terraria where it comes out and "Oh, lol, there's fishing and a new tier of swords and an NPC that sells a bubble machine" and it's all very easy to sort through. I'm talking gobs of content piled on top of each other. Maybe it's the lack of documentation, but it feels like you sink neck-deep into Starbound content and it's easy to get lost in space (lulz).

i tried it briefly, but i had some issues getting the game running. must've chose a bad time. i didn't even get to the meat and potatoes, but i like how they changed the intro missions. it's not something you can just do quickly and leave the planet

You pretty much have to trash your player and universe folders on a daily basis, that's where 90% of the nightly problems seem to spring from.

And yeah, the new starting missions plus the Garden biome makes starting much better.

i still feel i got my money's worth
Yeah, I had some great experiences in Starbound, especially playing with a friend.

I don't regret supporting it and it sounds like it's still in development. In contrast, I DO kind of regret getting Cubeworld early.

Yea same for me, I am sure it will be a load of fun with my friends when it finally releases. It seems like the team still gets a lot of vitriol thrown their way but I think the game will be just fine when it comes out and don't consider my pre-order a bad deal. On the other hand, fucking Cubeworld is the worst thing I have backed and that includes some Kickstarters that completely failed but at least they had the decency to talk to the people who gave them money.

Oh I'm not sorry I bought it, I was going to buy it "when" it was finished anyway, so what the hell I might as well pay the money now (a year ago) and get to play around in it while it develops.

I am disappointed that it's taking so long however, but that is mostly due to my own impatience and how good the game already is. I love the game and have over 50 hours played on it already, before it's even done. The music alone was worth $15 to me, LOL. And the changes that are coming are awesome and greatly improve the game.

I just want them now.

I nearly got Cubeworld. haven't heard a thing of it in a long time

I also agree the soundtrack is well worth the cost of entrance.

Heh. I'd completely forgotten this existed. Good to see development is still continuing on it, I enjoyed the early access when it first came out but it clearly still needed a lot of time in the oven. Looking forward to giving it another go when it's done.

I dont think anyone is doubting that they will add features they promised, more like they are disappointed, because they said that beta will be out year ago and we still in early alpha.

:lol Cubeworld is one of the worst examples of the Early Access model.

A complete failure.

Starbound is at least making progress. Really don't understand why they have abandoned the stable version though. At least they could have released one update.. a small one even. That's the disappointing thing.

Right now I would say I regret my purchase. The next patch should make it all good though. As long as it's not months and months away.

This along with DayZ has put me off EA games for life.

I also feel like I got way more than my money's worth. And if development froze here and now, I'd probably start playing the shit out of it. But knowing the game is getting better and better is reason enough for me to wait until they deem it complete.

The one thing is that I really hope they're able to patch in a Terraria-like controller setup, because I've got my PC hooked up to the living room's TV now...

A new trailer has arrived! Hope you like what's coming up!

Thanks for sticking with us so far.

It's a christmas miracle! Massive update, time for Starbound GAF to re-assemble :D!

Edit: No ETA on the update? Chucklefish is all *Chuckles*

Edit #2:

As Finn noted yesterday on Twitter, we’re trying to push these updates to the unstable branch next week and, depending on how that goes, pushing them to the stable branch in January.

Bummer, January feels far away!

More like Santa, some people believe in it, others don't.

I honestly don't get the people who don't believeStarbound's gonna get finished, it's pretty obvious the devs have been working their collective butts off, the trailer makes it even more clear.

Window UI scripting looks awesome. If we can integrate dungeon crawling into normal game progression that would be so cool.

I'm really looking forward to test, i hope that You overhaul item system completely. I want diablo-like [not that deep of course] customization for items, so the grind and farming make sense and items change how You play the game completely :)

How is this game along now? Got it from that Humble Bundle ages ago but never really played it, last time I played it was the update that character wipes were undone I think.

I really, just *really* want to know when the fuck this game is expected to actually release. lol

I don't wanna play any Early Access versions and I hate how everytime I see this thread bumped and I check and its usually just talk of a new EA version coming along within the next couple months.

That depends. If you play the standard beta version then it hasn't changed in a year but is still an okay game, obviously a beta though but stable. Now, if you play the nightly version, then they've added a LOT to the game and it is SO much better than the stable beta. But the nightly version is far from stable, it crashes and doesn't work at all half the time, and save data gets wiped all the time.

So, the game is still very much in development, but man when it's done this is going to be fantastically awesome.

I saw the video on twitter and some massive changes and that gif is perfect! Can't wait to go back haven't played in a longtime.

But i want to ask after this more frequent updates?

I'd have to imagine so.

The core issue was they had to basically rebuild all the "game" parts of the game since they launched it once they had the engine, art assets, and some prototype-esque systems in place so people could play around with it, but it wasn't actually fleshed out as a game at that point.

From here on, they actually have that core in place to build on, so I imagine they would just update that when they have new things ready.

True i am excited there are missions and quests that will keep me busy. The amount they have worked on this year is pretty massive when watching this video. This game will keep me busy for sure now.

As someone who has actually been following the updates on the site and occasionally fiddling with the nightlies, this game has seriously changed quite a bit since the last stable release, and the amount of content added is jaw-dropping.

Just look at this update log, which isn't even complete. Holy shit.

They've practically overhauled nearly everything, that's how big this update is. Makes me regret looking at the comments on the trailer, the amount of whingeing by idiots and haters is pathetic.

Sjieeeeeeeeet that is a LONG list! Like a complete new game. That year did some amazing stuff! Really excited to play it again next year now more complete then ever before!

I'm pretty glad I didn't play too much of the game when I bought it last year. I won't feel burnt out at all when this update finally hits. I can't wait to play it after that trailer.

Nice video, thanks for swinging by Supernorn.

Fixed that for ya. The nightly updates have been incrediballs. I recognize a bunch of stuff from the trailer in there like the Missions (which are prettttty damn good), Quests, etc.

Excited for people who haven't been trying the nightly updates to see just how much has changed.

Believe me, I'm excited to try it out myself, every single change and addition in that trailer was like music to my ears :D.

Yup. Been playing around on the nightlies again lately and it's gonna be nice to have it pushed and get to play with GAF again.

Wow, for some reason I thought this was out already, and they were working on a PS4 version.

I can safely put any thoughts or notions of a PS4 ver coming to rest for quite some time, by the looks of it!

I played about five hours of this earlier this year, then decided to wait for the big update. Can't wait to give it a shot, seems like just a massive amount of content.

I'm not sure if things have changed but this big update is likely the 1.0 update

it wouldn't be surprising if after the 1.0 hits they started focusing on getting it on the ps4 and then updating both versions of the game.

It's not 1.0, there's still a ways to go for that. This is just a big step in that direction. After reworking a lot of systems and getting the groundwork set for the real progression etc instead of the placeholder stuff that was there previously, they're nearing a point where they can actually push it to Stable.

Since they were reworking a lot of core stuff, pushing the changes they've been making to stable/unstable would have made it feel largely broken, on top of the fact that it is actually somewhat broken haha.

The winter update will still be incomplete, but it'll be better representing what gameplay will actually be like than the current Stable version.

Nice stuff coming. I still prefer to play when there's no chance of me losing things, but they won't mind since I already bought it.

I wonder how close they are to final.

That was a great trailer! I had soured a bit on this game's development but it looks pretty different from the last time I played it. Excited to try it out again over the holiday

Why would you even assume that's 1.0 if THEY don't say it's 1.0.

You're only setting yourself up for disappointment, as big as this update looks.

January is enough for me, too much to play right now :p

I was hoping to see something about multiplayer connectivity in that trailer, I hate having to deal with port forwarding. I do think I saw something about Networking towards the end though, whatever that means.
