Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

I love how I keep hearing people say "This isn't like Terraria!" when it totally is. Its just Terraria taken in a different direction. But its still very much rooted in Terraria.

That's not a bad thing so I don't know why people get defensive over it.

I have to shut off Twitch's chat feature almost as soon as a stream loads. Last night I made the mistake of actually reading it and the level of derp was astounding. People calling it Terraria 2, or bitching it was ripping off Terraria, or that the art style was hideous compared to Terraria... yeah, I'll stop there.

Just FYI, YES, you're going to someday find Benjamin Graven in this game.

Yes, you don't need my permission to murder him...but you have my blessing.

I kind of wish I had bought a higher tier, just because it supports the developers and some of that stuff is really cool... but I can't justify spending $50 on a game and for that price the perks just weren't worth it.

I'll keep an eye out for your alter ego though. Since I'm a hoarder, you'll probably end up in an NPC zoo. I'll hang a sign so the kids don't bang on the glass.

Also, I just looked, and a LOT of the higher tiers sold. 30/30 for the $500 one (people sure do love their hats), all but 2 of the $1000 ones (hope the weapons they design aren't ass)... and I guess we'll find statues for 10 $2000 contributors. I'll be sure to put them in my "Halls of people with way too much money."

Finally hit the 4th page, so needs to be stressed again for people too lazy to look at the OP...

FOR THE LOVE OF TINY ALIEN PENGUINS WITH GUNS, DON'T PLAY THE GAME DURING THE FIRST PHASE OF THE BETA IF YOU DONT THINK YOU CAN HANDLE A BROKEN, UNBALANCED, INCOMPLETE GAME.

Also... based on streams I watched last night...

Using the frakkin beacon for lulz will make me so much hate you on the server. At least warn people before you do.

I dunno, the result seemed pretty localized. I don't think it will wander the whole surface of a planet looking for people to zap, so if somebody does use one, it probably just stays close to that area.

One of a thousand things we'll just have to check out... tomorrow!

OCD was in full swing, the giant clumsy arches of slush he used to build a base was an especially rage-inducing moment. Jira actually was saying stuff like "I bet that pisses you off" AS I WAS TYPING ABOUT HOW MUCH IT PISSED ME OFF.

I think I want Starbound so much just because, unlike Terraria, I can not want to live on a given planet anymore and actually leave.
JUWnj.gif

Haha that is enticing, multiple canvas to work on, seamlessly. It would be super awesome if on your SP game you could pick X world and then when you get on Gafs server you could join any players X world w/o having to disconnect / reconnect etc. Kind of like opening X world to anyone in a server you connect to.

Then again they may have another solution in place that I dont know about. Media Blackouts are so good, such Starbound, very information, woW!

edit: I'm reaching Yoshi's level of HYPE right now!!!

I'm going to go ahead and vote this as the best sentence in this thread.

It's amusing, but I have an embarrassingly large stack of paper with concepts for buildings I've been doodling lately, so it's not far from the truth. One of my big goals that I wasn't able to do in Terraria is construct a massive greenhouse complex with as many plant specimens as possible. With Terraria, there were only six, so it was more like a boring farm than a garden. Plus, two of them had to be kept underwater / in lava, which made it hard to really appreciate them.

I'm kind of hoping that there are plants that require certain environmental factors though, and that there are ways to simulate those somehow. I'd love to have, say, a greenhouse that has to be kept at arctic conditions.

I'm going to be kind of bummed if there's no way to collect all the cool tree types too, I've seen so many weird ones already. In Terraria I had a big arboretum for regular / corrupt / jungle / hallowed trees. I'd love to have something similar in Starbound, maybe I'll mention it to the devs if I don't see it.

Now you're just getting crazy!

Something I heard in one of the Leth streams is that tree growth is automatic for now because they want to have different seeds for different trees, as opposed to planting trees on a planet and they just match all of the others there. I don't remember what he said exactly, but he said they definitely want to make it so you can take any of the things you find and put them where you want them.

Anyone know if we'll be able to zoom in and have the camera close to our character like in this GIF?

lss.gif

Not sure if it's that close for just the image or if you can actually move the camera in that close in the game

That sounds like fun to me, which is why I got it! Maybe I'm dumb but I would of gotten this eventually. A beta only happens once, right?

Speaking of not reading the OP, is the only way to send feedback through their forums?

There's an option to zoom in and out, there's 3 levels of zoom. Unsure if its set to a hotkey, but it was shown in a stream that its in-game menu option.

Also mentioned in a stream, the game launcher will have a way to send feedback/report bugs.

If true,

I'm going to be in the thread asking people to save me samples of everything so I can catalog them. I can't do it alone, one of the developers crunched the numbers and came up with 422.22 quadrillion planets expected for release.

I built entire cities in Terraria just to organize and store shit in identical chests. If we can collect trees, plants, etc., and get away with stuff like displaying weapons on racks, etc., then one planet may not be enough.

If they let us capture and display monsters.... it's gonna look like the end of "Cabin in the Woods".

Maybe not that close, the developers were talking about it in the Wanderlust Developers' stream that they have a lot of tools specifically for videos and such, like turning invisible, zooming way in/out, etc.

Oh, good. I'm not just imagining I remembered hearing that. Reddit: So, about trees.

This game might make you go insane with all the collecting. I hope you're only talking about collecting the unique weapons and not every variant of procedurally generated weapon. Weapon racks would be great. That's something that should have been in Terraria along with the wooden mannequins. There is going to be way too much stuff to collect in this game, from all the plants, pets, weapons, fossils when they're in..

This. Having a massive armory with weapon racks to display your favorites would be awesome
Imagine having a huge underground complex with each section showcasing a different biome, with the area's fauna and flora roaming around

I had no idea about the Homeworld/terraforming aspect. If I wasn't already sold, that would have done it. Also didn't know about the temperature playing a factor or the different atmosphere types

Anyone know if the NPC system from Terraria makes a return? That was one aspect I felt elevated Terraria over Minecraft, it gave your buildings a purpose beyond looking cool

A moment of panic there when I thought I had to sign up specifically for the beta, just got to refresh the shit out of my e-mail tomorrow. Planet of the Apex sooooon.

There are no hard details on how the NPC system will work in this game as far as I know, other than that they have plans for at least a similar system to Terraria.
Holy shit, how would it work on Gaf's server? There will be tons of different planets we can go to?
There will be nearly an infinite amount of worlds you can go to. The server hosts the whole universe, and apparently the only limitations are based on what the server can handle. Theoretically, any number of players could be on any number of separate planets, meaning plenty of area for places for people to claim as their own, and also plenty of room for community-wide places, or PVP planets.
So just found out there will be vehicles. Saw hoverbikes and mechs, know of any others? Or mounts?
Horses are a possibility, but I haven't seen much solid info on mounts in general. Never seen actual gameplay footage of it.

I watched the TB gameplay with Jesse and another one from docm77, the game seems way more polished and in better state than Terraria was when it released on Steam .

Hype levels... critical...
It sucks that tomorrow I'll have very little free time. On the other hand, Friday is a Spanish national holiday (our current Constitution approval) so I'll devote a lot of it to binding stars. Or bounding among them. Whatever.

I am so down for this you guys. I don't know if I want to try the beta or at least wait for stage 2. Do I save money buying early?

You will save money by not spending it on whores, crack and pizza trying to fill the void in your life that Starbound can w/ only $15!!! ...
No idea

This kind of multi-player appeals to the single player type gamer that I am almost exclusively. Settle a planet far far away, play like the hermit I am, and then be surprised when someone shows up after several months of gameplay. Of course I'd be more than happy to give them a helping hand to get off MY planet with my giant phallus shaped rocket defenses that my planet would be bristling with.

It's almost here people! It's hard to believe that tomorrow we'll have the beta. We can finally play, watch it evolve and grow together. No beta phase that we have to stop playing and wait another long while for the full release. I guess thank steam for that. I'm prepared for lots of bugs, I'm prepared for the game basically being a shell of the final version. I'm okay with that. Just super excited to watch it grow and get in there daily to play with my friends. Also very excited to see the community GAF forms for this game.

I will find Penis Planet out there somewhere. Who wants to journey with me? I also want to find a demon planet so I can start my Chaos cult there.

I will not rest until I find your penis planet.

...said everybody encountering a user created race in Spore.

On-topic, I didn't realize that there was a 4 pack available. Might have to see if I can do some convincing to get friends in on that.

Actually not so off-topic :p

Listening to that long YouTube post of the Leth stream. Here is a list of playable instruments in the game:

Accordion, acoustic guitar, banjo, bass guitar, "bones", clarinet, drum kit, dulcimer, electric bass, female mic (for Animal Crossing-like singing), flute, harmonica, harp, koto, lead guitar, male mic (more singing), music box, nylon guitar, oboe, ocarina, overdriven guitar, piano, reed organ, rock organ, saxophone, steel drum, trumpet, and violin.

I also fully understand that this will be a BETA. I will treat it as such. I'm treating it as we were sent off on an experimental voyage, the first wave so to speak. We'll lack the technology that the next waves will have, but we'll get to watch the world evolve while our corporate sponsors keep sending us resources and new tech over time.

Not doing anything story-related though. I hope Penisthulu is involved though.

Whatever you say Protein Stanley Robinson...

Thanks for the reddit link. No, I know better than to try and collect procedurally generated-weapons. There are special pre-built weapons though, so collecting those isn't entirely out of the question. And of course, I'll save any weapons that I like the look of.

As for fossils, I hope it works like Animal Crossing: you find a set number of fossils for a set number of species, and once you have a complete skeleton you can combine them to create a museum-like display. Because I'm already making a museum for art, I might as well have a natural history wing.

Funny story though as far as procedurally generated stuff goes. We used to play an old Mac RPG called Realmz, and my dad was especially into mapping all the dungeons for secret walls and treasure. He had a big folder full of graph paper maps. When he saw us playing Diablo 2 he was interested in trying it, but a few hours in he called us to wonder why his map was so off. He didn't realize it was randomly generated. I think he kind of lost interest in it a bit then, but he stuck with it. Turned his attention to hoarding too, his storage chest was packed with Perfect gems.

Is there native controller support in the beta?

I really want to comfy couch this one...

Sorry, not yet. From the Beta FAQ thread: "Not yet. It's something we want to add for sure but it hasn't been on the top of our list of priorities."

They were talking about this in the stream the other night; there are little beacons you find (at least, I think they found it, I didn't see exactly) and place that summon an NPC to wherever you drop it. In this case, it was an Avian guard, but Tiy mentioned there are merchants, pirates, etc. to find.

So just found out there will be vehicles. Saw hoverbikes and mechs, know of any others? Or mounts?

According to the Beta FAQ thread, there's only 2 mechs currently in right now.

Not only that, but the game has full .abc compatibility, meaning you can write or download songs and have them automatically play in game, rather than manually jamming on the keyboard to play individual notes. Lord of the Rings Online did this and it was awesome.

I'll just leave this here; http://www.thefatlute.eu/

I want some really dangerous creatures. Something that makes you terrified to go out after dark or journey out too far. Maybe a Deathclaw-like creature. I don't just want shit to bellyflop around and try to kill you. I want you to be chased and stalked. Nemesis or SA-X anyone?

I want multiple creatures like this. Double digits would be okay too.

Someone should pitch ideas to Chucklefish, I want:

Giant sea creatures that pull you under, aliens that tunnel underground and take you under, flying creatures that can abduct you and drop you 100 feet, aliens that impregnate you and you must remove the embryo by surgery or antidote, aliens that infect you with viruses that can cause you to infect others, enemies that can blind you or make you insane by looking at them, pests that start eating your buildings unless they're reinforced, enemies that pose as NPCs and then transform and eat you, indigenous that steal your hi-tech weapons and use them on you, etc.

DO IT!

Were it not for the blue background, I swear I wouldn't recognize my own posts with the Christmas avatar. It looks like Parappa the Rapper unless I look right at it.

They've said Level 100 planets will be dangerous, even for fully-geared characters. A friend and I were just talking about this last night though, we think maybe the AI we've seen is purposely dumb. I mean, they all have pretty basic attacks; charge straight at you, jump straight over you, shoot you in the face... I'm hoping the early AI is just derpy on purpose.

Stuff like this would be awesome. How cool would it be if you accidentally awaken some kind of unstoppable mechanical beast, and then it's stalking you across the planet, maybe even off-world....
