Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Welp, discovered the problem I'm somewhat embarrassed to say. There was a file missing! I had forgotten to include the projectile files for the sword..

Yup that did it!

Thinking of calling each tier of Monado "level 1-10" so it's more organised in the bench view. Annoyingly i cant seem to find a way of organising the order stuff is listed.

EDIT: The bench mod working ok?

I was actually planning on doing something similar in a later update. Like naming them Monado I, Monado II, Monado Circuit Board I etc. When I started using them in my own game it got too confusing. I'll probably update all the stuff that needs updating after they release they next update.

So what is the main difference between Alpha and Beta sectors? I feel like I've run out of things to craft; does that mean I should move on to Beta?

Welp. I'm currently working on a lot of server- and client-side software to administrate Starbound servers, expose server-side interfaces to the game over webservices (to use in websites) and distribute server-side mods to all clients upon connect.

Why is this game making me do it. Why.

Right now it's being primarily developed and tested on a friend's sever but once it hits a stable enough state I might release it publicly.

Game crashed when I tried changing the resolution.

The icons on the right of the screen were halfway off the screen, so I was going to adjust the res, but then the game crashed with an error and tons of error windows.

Gonna try again in a bit.

So I found something called a "Crystal Plant Seed", which grows crystals (the material)... I think. So I was wondering, are there any seeds that require a special dirt block type to grow on or does it just take a really long time?

Does the game save all the different character data? Even after the wipe I'm asked. I just looked and I have a lot of files under player.

They really just need an in game delete button already.

That would be pretty awesome if you did, since me and a friend have started our own server but are finding it a little difficult to set up Starbound.

Hmm, doesn't work. Maybe I can't have two tech upgrades equiped [even though there are 5 slots]?

Fake edit: als tabbing just crashed my game. And since it's been hours since I last saved, I fear the worst.

Pulse jump is activated by double spacebar tap... Im 100% sure about that.
You must have some energy... just jump and when in air jump again... dont forget to select pulse jump as active power in inventory.

EDIT: Person with spaceship mod meets a person without it :)

Only one tech can be used at a time.

I am not a fan of that particular approach, especially since there's no hotkey to switch between them. It should function like Terraria's accessories though, honestly.

Ah, I see. That explains it.

Weird approach indeed. But doesn't matter, the crash borked everything so my pulse jump is gone anyway haha.

Haha. ha. ha... :(

Right I was going to make a cool graphic for it, but i'm tired and have been holding off too long to make you guys wait another day so here it is! Gaf Crafting Bench V.01!

It has the bench, all my hats, lissar's monado sword and The Chomper tool by sqwarlock.

Enjoy!

(if i could get the link in the OP I would greatly appreciate it <3)
Will only work in singleplayer for the time being unless Ryudo has it installed on the server also

I found a Glitch base and destroyed everyone inside.

It's too easy to cheese them by building blocks and shooting through holes.

But I couldn't have gotten any cool stuff otherwise so I'm cool with it :P

This.
They nerfed them heavily anyway (energy consumption).

In my imagination:
- possibility to use all techs in same time, as long as they don't use similar effects.
- passive techs - something like auras in PoE - for example tech that lowers energy regeneration rate but gives small HP regeneration or tech that reserves % of our energy but increses its regen rate etc. etc.

:)

Yeah, i stopped doing that... because my rocket launcher damages even through 3 blocks :P

so how are you spending your time in this game?
We bought a 4-player pack and I set up a server for us to play on. After 2-3 days we're all pretty burnt out on starbound. There just isn't anything to do. Sure there's lots of planets but they all play almost the same. The grinding is just painful, I feel like there is no actual progression in the game, outside of the techs it's all just a number game. No new gameplay is added by moving on to new sectors, biomes feel more like just tilesets than being completely different environments. Combat is a joke...

By comparison I bought minecraft in alpha and that game felt fresh and exciting to me for almost two years.

I realize this game is in beta and big changes are probably on the way. It might be completely different and a much more enjoyable experience in six months, but I'm curious about how you who already has spend tens of hours in the game manage to still have fun while playing because to us, like I said, it's just a painful repetitive grind.

So am I doing something wrong here? I scan things in to the 3D printer and they get destroyed like it said it would. But nothing actually gets added to the printer. Can't make a new one, so now I lost the old item and need to find it again.

A friend did the same thing and he lost his too and can't make it.

Make sure that whatever you are scanning has a pixel value. Only things with pixel values can be remade with the printer.

Only scan furniture/decorations. Do not try scanning seeds, spawners etc. Scanning special doors, beds, chests and so on should work just fine. Most things that won't be added won't scan in the first place, but some things(like the aforementioned seeds and spawners) will be eaten for no reason.

So I've realized that I can dual wield, say a flashlight and a 1-handed weapon, but I'm not actually sure how I'm doing it. Anyone know? Can I dual wield a flashlight and the pick-axe?

How do you know what's solo?

They will have only one header. If you scroll down on multi-instrument files, they have several headers, not just notes.

Here's my Terraria city (yes, city) screenshot.

Bonus: Here's the world; a lot of the stuff out there was just stuff I saw other people had done and wanted a copy in my world, but most of it is mine.

That is freaking insane. Can't wait to see your stuff in this game.

Speaking of which, they really need to add build permissions to the game. If not for the worlds, then for the ships; you can warp to the ship of anyone you party with and strip it clean. :S

present main gaf planet is: -39112236 -19754836
there is a main building, x-mas tree, magma core lab, endless stairway to heaven

Thanks a lot! Will check it soon (probably not until the weekend).

Anyway, good news everyone! The devs noticed my hairstyle mod and want to add them into the game officially! Messaging with Tiy right now.

Whoa, that's awesome! Congratulations! :)

Tiy tweet:

Sorry about the tiny house on the second starter planet, that was my doing and I had limited resources.

Don't apologize! The only thing is that it was a bit confusing beaming down and seeing all that. You know what, it could be cool to leave a message right there with the coordinates of the main GAF planet. Someone with the paint tool is up for the task?

So the GAF work bench mod is pretty much done, just waiting on a response from some of the fine folk here for their permission to include their items to the list. Here are the newest hats as a tease.

Oh and by the way, the GAF gold helmet is going to take some real time and effort to make in game.

I love the idea of putting all those recipes together in a GAF bench, it's just great. :)

This is how I make it easier. Flashlight in the right hand slot and any other one-hander allows the duel wielding. If you see that two-hands icon on anything it means that it can't be duel wielded.

Noticed an interesting bug last night when I hopped onto multiplayer. I beamed over to my friends ship and sat down at his navigation panel. It let me click on planets and hit go, it used his fuel, but the ship didn't actually move. When I went back to my ship, it had moved to the planet I told my friends ship to go to, even though my ship had no fuel.

Awesome, I like that better than what I had going on; weapons in the L/R slots. Thanks!

I finally made it to Beta sector, and found some diamond and platinum ore, weee! Snow levels seemed to have more of it?

Well, seeing as I haven't got an instrument post-wipe, and I barely will be able to play until weekend (and perhaps even then), I decided to zip up all the music I've been selecting. These are all one-track .abc files, manually either selected or converted from MIDI by me so that they're as recognizable as possible. I've focused on videogames for obvious reasons, but threw in a handful of movies and TV themes plus some "non-soundtrack" music I liked most.

I apologize to Retro about the scarcity of FFVII tracks; I've been looking for decent, convertable MIDIs for the longest time with little luck. Seriously, I must have listened to like 20 variants of Aeris' theme, none of them would convert to anything decent. :P

Awesome, I like that better than what I had going on; weapons in the L/R slots. Thanks!

In fact, weapons on L/R is the better way; if both weapons are one-handed, then right-clicking on the flashlight (assuming it's on a number) will make you wield one weapon on the left hand and the flashlight on the right; but left-clicking it will make the reverse. As a bonus, hitting X puts you into weapon (dual-wield) mode immediately, for easy defense.

What should I be doing if I'm just jumping in on the action now? One of my characters landed on the planet with the GAF house all set up but the beasties outside are something fierce. I find that all the passageways down to the leftover resources are clogged by them as well so I'm stuck mining around them with the matter manipulator if I have the patience or go headfirst hoping that I can avoid as much damage as possible.

So, no wipe but we need new characters for the changes to take place?

Im still very hesitant to put effort in building stuff.

Yep. I'm not too fond to restart game over and over again, so I'm just gonna sit on it for a while and maybe watch some streams until we can get a "solid" version.

If you're talking about yesterday's hotfix, the changes went into effect on my already existing character.

Hmmm interesting :)

Hopefully theres more patches that change stuff on the fly.

I can play the game for lots of hours and making stuff is calming, but wiping my buildings actually hurts even if I can rebuild.
