Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

I've been doing some planet hopping. Landed on one with not a SINGLE tree. Which kind of sucked because I accidentally added all my wood to my ship as fuel and only had 14 torches. But on the bright side there was plenty of iron and copper and even some silver pretty accessible. Managed to score some gold as well. Good find.

I also stumbled across some chests and ended up with a nice sword that blows bubbles lol.

Time to pack it up and go find a planet with some trees though. :)

They don't break. They just run out of durability and start sucking until you pump them back up.

How do you up the durability? I couldn't figure it out.

Good to know. This game is so close to perfection for me.

For those who are having trouble find specific ores try different searching different low level planets.

I ... think I just died of smoke inhalation. I think the cavern I was digging in filled up with too much smoke (was digging underneath my house, doors not open, torches everywhere) and I died.

That's kind of awesome.

Sure it wasn't of cold? The screen gets foggy when you are cold.

I've found, if you're hurting for copper or iron, a good place to dig (assuming you're okay on coal) is a desert planet. Hit that loose sand and just sweep your pick and all of it comes cascading down with you. Just be careful to light torches as you go and watch for any sudden drops. There's been a few ass-clenching moments where it seemed like my entire screen was shifting downwards.

Damn, that's really nice Retro. How do you make the support beams flip to the other side?

Support beams (at least, the wood ones, haven't seen any others) are kind of wonky with their placement; I've found if you consider the lower corner to be where you're 'aiming', it lets you flip them. It's kind of wonky, not really a bug but I submitted a comment on it earlier.

You can also warp to your party members ship.

Until they fix that tonight.

Silver Ore seems impossible to find on my starting planet, I've mined a decent amount and scanned a good bit of the surface as well. Iron, Copper, Coal, all abundant. I found a few Silver on the surface right as I dropped into the world and nothing since. Hopefully this update will just make a bunch of deposits I missed visible. I did find a chest with a cool sword that shoots fireballs though so that ain't so bad.

So this is a good game guys? Terraria in space? Or is it more in depth than that?

More depth, though if you've played Terraria you'll grasp the basic concept quickly; uninhabited planet full of thinks that want to kill you, lots of digging, crafting, building, exploring, combat. The addition of multiple planets (and by multiple, I mean over 400 quadrillion planets) means there's lots of room for surprises, something Terraria lacked with it's limited, "earthbound" approach. You can stumble across all sorts of procedurally generated towns and dungeons, little encounters (seen cultists, robotic blacksmith hermits, avian trading camps)... and who knows what else. The game is massive and the developers have said their goal is rapid content updates.

The limits of what's in the game aren't immediately clear yet. People have been finding all sorts of weird shit. And they haven't even added in an entire race, fossils or pets yet.

Good to hear. I've been starving for depth in games lately. Can you customize your ship?

You can change the walls and add furniture and such, but the layouts are unfortunately fixed. You can increase their size though.

i found exactly 1 piece of silver ore in nearly 10 hrs of play. the stuff must be way deeper or something.

That really sounds awesome. Sounds like they've created a great foundation so they can focus on interesting content.

Damn. Bought. Might as well jump in now if it's already this good.

Does anyone know if I would die if I jump in here? It took too long to get down here to risk it.

Honestly the hate Terraria band wagon is full let's leave it at that. I love this game even if all I do is mine slowly..really slow. I will sink many days into this like I did with Terraria.

Is there anyway to speed up time? Not skip it, just make it speed up. In game also lol.

*for lava place blocks and destroy while leaving the sides and bottom.

:( everytime I press "Launch Starbound" it loads the Chucklefish logo and then freezes there. I can't get past it into the game.... anyone have any suggestions for how I might be able to progress?

I've found 3 tech blueprints and they've all been Energy Dash :(

While cool, I've killed myself with it more than once when frantically tapping wasd to escape something or make a precise jump

I got Pulse Jump, and it's fantastic. Not only can you cheese falls like you could in Terraria, being a little bit slow on space works almost like a deathbomb in shmups - you take partial damage instead of dying.

It's been doing this to me, I just let it sit there for a minute or so and it eventually loads.

I figured it was the time of the year for caroling. Guess not everyone has an appreciation of music.

What song can you play? I picked up a reed organ and can only play Canon in D so far. Wasn't sure if each instrument initially gave you a specific song or not.

Also found a king glitch in his own castle and he attacked me on sight. So I killed him and took his crown. Hail to the glitch king!

Found out you can walk in a circle around the planet but it's a very long walk, obviously depending on the planet size, etc.

Happens every time I launch, I just alt tab to a firefox window and after a few minutes the game will load.

Is there a place for updates? Some people said multiplayers not working, some say it does. Still wondering if I should get this game since I tried it at a friends.
