Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Made it to x sector, made three diamond pick axes and pretty much found charr, it's as volatile as in Starcraft.

Ores found so far....

Copper
Silver
Gold
Platinum
Titanium
Rubium (repairs pickaxes)
Cerulium
Uranium
Plutonium
Solarium

All theses ores by themselves make bars of thee respective ores, the ones that need coal are as follows...

Iron + Coal = Steel Bars
Titanium + Coal = Durasteel Bars

Also trapping bosses makes them a joke to kill, trap them inside and go to town (it's cheap but effective).

Sorry to say that but if your game progression is pushed forward for have "good" press instead of a better way to improve the gameplay, i dont believe you're a good developer.

He is right honestly. Beta is finding those game breaking bugs..not client crashing and unplayable clients.

Looks like pixel cost to copper armor has been gotten rid of entirely. Guess I shouldn't have crafted before the update happened. Of course, I probably would have lost it all to dying anyway.

Now if only I could find more iron somewhere. I've run into bits and pieces on the surface, but the only metal I've found a substantial amount of is copper.

the following is spoilered as it's related to my tactics and in general I have been spoilering any gameplay related stuff in case people don't want to know :P
I've had good luck finding iron in level 2-3 deserts. I just explore for a while, find a nice big cave to go down, start heading down until I find some fine sand and or gravel, and dig up the area and typically have coal, bronze and iron shower down upon me.

of course I might not be the best person to get advice from as I am likely playing the game "wrong"
I have a plat pick axe and the rest of my stuff is still iron based or worse lol.

Alright, grabbed a screen shot of my simple little starter house.

Wow, that's beautiful. It makes me a bit self-conscious to upload my lame attempt, but hey, here it is:

If you like this you should do yourself a favor and play Terraria..

I would contest it. I didn't like Terraria all that much for some reason, but I'm addicted to this. I honestly can't imagine somebody going back to Terraria after Starbound and enjoying it much.

Keep digging down. I made a huge vertical shaft, three squares wide, fitted with platforms for easy ascending/descending. I explored each cave I came across, and as I got deeper, I kept finding different stuff; not just iron, but silver, gold, magma rock, gravel, and sand as well. By the way, I checked if you can melt sand to make glass, and it turns out you can. :)

Then you don't know much about development at all. Opening a very incomplete build to the public only opens you to a flood of bug reports that are basically stuff you already know repeated a thousand times. It doesn't make sense AT ALL to have an open alpha until your own bug reports have started drying out.
Not to be a dick about it, but I'm a software engineer with over 15 years of work experience, so I kind of know what I'm talking about.

Shift-right-click to split stacks.

Actually, right click alone also splits stacks. :)

Went to another planet yesterday, was a desert one, with bones everywhere and weird fruit bearing bone plants, also found an
Avian Tomb
that I ended up raiding, and I went out of that with more than 5000 Pixels, so not really bothered by the cost changes :D

Also found blueprints for some bone furniture ! Yay ! :D

I came across my first piece of tech (the dash), but I don't know how to use it, does anyone now ?

Edit : Oh yeah also discovered you can use a 1 handed weapon and the flashlight at the same time #gamechanger

So... What happens if you use the right-click function on the matter manipulator on the background wall of your spaceship? I noticed it started to crack and then I got too scared to continue.

I think its a double tap in either direction.

Damnit. It if was just a random buff I should have just left it alone. I was hoping there was something unique about those pods, like a chance to gain a tech or something. Fuckkkk! Lol.

Does anyone know what this giant pod-like thing is? I've encountered it 3 times now. The first time interacting with it set me on fire after it exploded, the second time it sort of folded itself into space and vanished, and the third time it killed me instantly (lost over 1000 pixels FFFFFFFFFF!)

Yikes thanks for the heads up. I've gotten it 3 times already and all 3 times it made my char glow so I dont need a flashlight. I'd rather not mess with that. lol

I've been doing that, but I guess my luck has been bad. Lots of copper though. And I wasn't too sad about finding some glass making sand.

Does your pickaxe have to wear out before you can repair it? Not sure how to go about repairs.

Nah you can use the ores to repair at any time. It takes multiple pieces to fix a really badly dented pickaxe, anyway. Take the ores in hand, right-click on the pickaxe.

Anyone got borderless windowed mode working (since full-screen is no-go with alt-tabbing)? My trusty Windowed Borderless Gaming program can't seem to handle it.

Well then, if someone could tell me how to do it I would appreciate it. There doesn't seem to be an option for it anywhere I've looked.

I haven't seen it mentioned and perhaps I'm the only dumbass not to realize, but you can add books type items (not piles of books) to your codex for your reading pleasure. Some are gold colored with numbers on them.

Put in item slot, select and click.

I wonder if there are actual hints about in-game stuff in them as one of them specifically mentioned a space station over the planet but by the time I realized I could add to Codex that planet was long behind me. Many of them are fumy too :)

Is there a fast travel way to get back to home or my spaceship (like the Magic Mirror in Terraria)?

I know you can beam back to your ship but not once you go too deep underground

After playing for a bit all I can say is that Beta really needed to be released early this year.

With the community working with the devs for finding bugs and help improve the gameplay I'm pretty sure this game will have a "short" beta period
Yea I don't see this going on for too long.

At least the first stage of the beta. It's already stable and with the amount of feedback and daily updates, within a few weeks I think we'll have a solid game.

Yeah you can only have one active at a time but many locked in, press I and click on which one you want.

Yup just literally found this out a second ago - really needs key shortcuts for these, going via the inventory each time is so awkward.

Lol the new leather armor set has 13 defense, 3 more than silver and you only need 33 pieces of leather total to craft it (plus it's got loads of warmth). Nerf!

Uh so how do I get to higher crafting tiers. We're kinda sitting aroudn just with shitty weapons and stuff. We beat the first boss... still didn't get anything unlocked.

Beat the first boss, get a molten core, use it to upgrade your anvil, craft an engine upgrade MK2 with your new anvil, travel to a tier 2 planet and profit!

But we die instantly on the tier 2 planet... I mean we're suppose to do this in silver armor only and shitty weapons?

Ok then, try this :
Lets share useful or interesting coordinates!

So once you beat the first boss and head to Sector B, you should start being able to find dungeons on planet surfaces.

Here's a level 11 arid planet that has a fairly straightforward Avian temple dungeon. After porting to the surface, head left for about five minutes or so to find the entrance. You won't miss it.

Good starting dungeon for folks freshly into the second tier. Most of the mobs inside just walk towards you fairly slowly so it shouldn't be difficult to kill them. They drop plenty of level 12-15 weapons. This should help you gear up for further dungeons runs on higher level planets at this point.

(Sector B)

I used this tip to get tier 2 weapons and they are quite useful, gonna drop some (about 20) in the GAF server chests as soon as I can.

Server needs to update most likely.

Also The Hyloti..ugh ugly! The lore is good and sadly..I like Florans but they lore wise..are too tribal heh. Don't know what to play! I want an Asian background....

I am going to stick with my Floran

But we die instantly on the tier 2 planet... I mean we're suppose to do this in silver armor only and shitty weapons?

There's a small chance to find creatures that have a red glowing effect that drop weapons and shields, got a great little spear that poisons anything it touches, from a level 6 planet if I remember right.

Florans really threw me for a loop. I chose it, figuring it'd be the normal gentle plant people. Nope, down right vicious dumb warrior race.

Started a new character - Avian of course, with this nickname - with the intention of playing on the GAF server, but I guess that's down right now for maintenance.

New starting planet isn't as interesting as my other one, but more convenient, combined with the changes to early game. Have a level 2 snow planet as the only other one in the system as well, so that should be nice when I'm ready to move up a tad.

Good thing your not stuck on a planet (for long). =)

And since people are already modding space ship sizes..maybe I can edit the Hyloti race lol...

I really liked the first half of Terraria (before the corruption spread) but after watching the GiantBomb quick look I'm unsure about this. Constantly having to worry about hunger and warmth is a big turn off for me.

It's really not that big of a deal once you're past the first few hours.

So... it's still a planet that one hits me nor does it tell me how I'm able to craft higher items.

Where did you find platinum ore? I can't find it anywhere

So does anyone know how the 3D Printer works? How do I scan in items, or is it only just a select few that are scannable? My Printer has nothing in it.

Looks like you now have a chance of getting meat when you kill an alien with just any weapon, figured they'd keep it to the bow/newly added hunting knife.

Nomal monster did 25 damage to me with the full silver set, should be doable with bandages.
Then in the dungeon they are sooooo slow you can kite them easily. They frequently drop weapons.

Must be really low chance. Also may be me but the chance for meat with bow has increased. Not getting stacks of leather anymore.

Did they add planting trees this patch? I haven't gotten any seeds.

On beta sector worlds, level 25 and upwards mostly.

It's luck of the draw if you find a world with good deposits. Gamma and x sector have the most, gamma it's not far under the surface on planets and x sector it liters the surface of many planets like rub and cerilium. I struck luck today that's why I'm really far ahead, I just got a streak of brilliant worlds loaded with loot and veins.

If I find a world load with it I'll pop the coordinates on here for people, noticed a lot of people having trouble finding that and silver, not just here but in general.
