Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

the armor/level/damage/penetration system in the game is REALLY harsh in the way it calculates.. epsecially early on. I mean, a few points point of armor pen is the difference between 1/2 and 100% damage and 200% damage agianst level 1,2,3 enemies, right?

damage on level is MOSTLY okay but fighting 10/9 vs fighting 9/10 is massive

They really need to add a confirmation to "Set Home" so that idiots like me don't have brain failure and accidentally set home to be not where my stuff is.

Fixed by doing nothing else after that but alt-tab out and kill the process.

Set up lampposts along the way to my house. It's a few screens west of where I get beamed down.

just walk up to npc's and press 'E' really. I wonder if the investigate icon would work as well for that.

My Apex says "A strange looking person" when I use investigate on any NPC. Something like "An indescribable monster" on any creature. Kind of wish there was a way to know if they were going to aggro or not with the investigate tool, so I'd know if I should try to shoot with my bow

Keep hitting dead ends with digging with either super tough rock that a copper pickaxe would take years to break through or poison lakes everywhere.

watching a stream of 2 russians who are mining into the lava. One is placing various dirt blocks to soak/cool the lava, the other is digging into the placed dirt blocks. Only with an occasional lava burn.

This is almost exactly like my world, except no ravines: I have Stonehenge like structures in my back.

The first one would have been a difficult planet to start in. The trees give vines, not wood, and the water is all poison.

I have both. I walk a few "feet" (of screen) away from my starter and the trees become the flower vine things that give fiber.

Oh my god, metal trees!?

I figured it was the time of the year for caroling. Guess not everyone has an appreciation of music.

I have these guys all over my world. Have you run into good NPCs yet or is everyone crazy cultists?

Heh.

Heh heh heh...

Mwahahahaha...

I had to look it up to make sure Decillion is an actual thing and they're not just fucking with us.

I've been keeping a txt file of all the planets I want to remember. It's the only reliable way to keep record of this stuff. Even if it were saved in game, that information will likely be wiped at some point.

There is a farsight cape on the surface of one of the planets at
Beta Glados 74 II

I know which planet, but if you want it, you'll find it. Unless loot is random. It's not random, is it?

Had to see what a decillion looks like when written out.

1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 is 1 decillion.

A log of all the planets you've visited would be a nice feature. And the ability to highlight planets/systems with custom notes.

New as in this last patch? I haven't been able to figure out how to make anything with the leather yet.

Are you using the loom? I was able to craft a whole snow set with leather alone. I finally am able to go to moons and snow planets without getting cold at all. Also helps that the defense on it is pretty high!

Here's what the gear looks like

went to the right on my starting planet, found an adult version of these non aggressive charging things. it killed me. respawned and went left, made it all the way back around to the cow parent, killed me again. :(

This game can have some incredible avalanches. I was mining and sand just started pouring in foooorever. Went to investigate where it came from and there was a huge open cavern now.

Yeah defense on the snow armor is a lot higher than the copper/silver armor.

Anyone have any recommended weapons for taking down the UFO? I didn't realize the first time that the beacon summons and I got my ass handed to me. I think I'm prepared now with the snow armor hopefully.

Me and my friends thought that traps would work on the ufo. So we built a house and lined the top with barbed wire and spinning blades.

Turns out... nope doesn't hurt enemies.... so it made the UFO fight waaay harder cause now we had to avoid barbed wire and spinning blades.

I used the little bob-ombs and wrecked him Haha, they did 600 damage to the UFO each.

How stable is this game so far? Im want to buy it Im just worried about my saves getting deleted or something

I haven't heard about anyone accidentally losing saves, but you can probably expect wipes at some point. Nothing is guaranteed with any update. It's definitely volunteer playtesting right now, but fun playtesting.

Yeah the power curve on the snow armor is way out of whack, but I think that was mentioned in the patch notes.

And I really need a better ranged weapon. Got the first boss below half, but I'm primarily stacked into this necromancer melee axe that shoots bones which I got from a random mini-boss. Otherwise I have a peashooter gun and the iron bow (which there isn't an upgrade for apparently, at least yet.) No apparent upgrade for the stone axe either.

ZOMG sand is the best material ever!

It can absorb water when placed if you want to drain some underground lakes!

All materials can do that, actually. They replace water, so mining them back removes the water. It also works for lava, allowing you to"dig" below the lava level (put a column of material, then hollow it).

I also agree that the new leather armor seems to be broken. I remember in the patch notes they mentioned it was supposed to be a tradeoff of armor for warmth, but it clearly is not so. I can only imagine they implemented it as a stopgap measure to alleviate the problems with cold planets, but haven't got around to making different tiers of it requiring different materials.

Here's some changes coming through today

Coming tonight..

- Major work has gone into making the game work correctly onto windows XP (done, needs testing)

- Fixed (nerfed sorry), Snow infantry armor (done)

- Make matter blocks discover-able in a new dungeon (done)

- Experimenting with a new leveling/damage/armor curve (Thank you to Chewymouse) (done, needs testing)

- Complete ore rebalance (working on it)

Lots more to come, these balance issues are taking some time. I'll add to the list as more is added.

having never really played terraria (I own both now) do you guys recommenced skipping terraria and just starting with this game?

Terreria is a great game, but if you're going to pick one or the other I'd go for this one, especially since the GAF community is booming and the game shines in multi.

I'd say get Terraria, play the crap out of it if you like it, and by then, Starbound will probably still be in beta, but much improved, not that it isn't fun to play now. Unless you're into the multiplayer side of things. Then just jump straight into Starbound.

feline mod and better manipulator mod are broke
meh its beta so i expected as much
i need coord as well
also whats the password someone changed it -_-

They really need to have a "Favorites" for coordinates in addition to the home planet. Because I know GAF is going to have people all over the place on the server, and knowing who is where would be helpful.

2 Questions.
1) How do I repair my pickaxe?
2) Anyway to sell things for pixels?

Also 5 hours in and havent left my original planet lol still on the 3rd crafting quest!

1. Pick up an ore of equal or greater quality (Gold pickaxe needs to be gold ore or above) and right click it. The higher the ore quality, the better the repair.

2. Not yet, the pixel prices attached to things indicate their 3D scanner value, I believe.

Holy shit, I don't think it's possible to see everything in the game in an entire lifetime. Quadrillions of planets? Holy shit, that's crazy

Actually I believe any ore can repair pickaxes.

I've been repairing my gold pickaxe with copper ore.

I suspect this isn't intentional though and will likely be fixed later.

Almost six hours in, still on my first world. Well more like 2 hours with my first character, four with my second.

Finally took the Glitch fortress, now I'm just exploring. Got some better weapons with fire and poison attributes. Controls and combat feels so much better than what I experienced in Terraria. For a supposedly super early beta, this already feels like a very complete game.

Game keeps crashing when I type item names into the crafting table window. I built a distress beacon and the
U F O
showed up and completely kicked my ass. Do I need to kill it? If not, is it worth killing?

I'm tempted to join the GAF server, but I've never played any game like this in multiplayer. Is there anything in this game that makes MP the 'preferred' way to play over SP? Benefits or the like?

Oh, and I can't find the post with the server info. How do I go about joining it?
