That's not a bug. You flew into the system carrying contraband, ignored the space cops warnings, then you killed them and had a bounty on your head.
I already got caught for the contraband by the UC. Got into the quest for it with them and they took it.

I had to “trick the game” into killing that ship and quickly selecting land to avoid it. I checked all fines —- all paid.

You gotta go to the next page with the RB, pressing X and finishing is just going to finish the creator, and it sounds like you started wtihout a trait.

I'd say restart the game if you're not too far into it.
I just did. Auto save was right before the character creator. Lost an hour or so progress but glad to pick up a few goofy perks.

I feel like a good size patch can get rid of some annoyances, or mods will take care of it. It just needs to be a bit more streamlined, especially concerning space traversal. Part of the fun is experiencing it at its beginning and see how updates/mods can change it for the better as time goes along. I did the same with CP2077, I enjoyed it at launch knowing full well all the issues it had, and now I am playing through it again in a much better state and tons of mod support, will repeat with Starfield as well.

Also I am not usually one to support reshades cause they typically go too far in a lot of different directions. But the odd piss filter that is everywhere in Starfield is horrendous, reshade has taken care of that. Why developers do this is beyond me.

TBH, not having a map you can bring up in the big cities is kinda fucking frustrating. I’d even take having to go to one of those mall things that goes “you are here”
A Map at the kiosks would be nice. Once you know your way around it becomes a non issue but still.........................

With 12.5 hours of playtime I think it's fair to give some impressions. Might be a bit of a rant because I have a lot of feelings right now.

The more I play this the more its fundamentally flawed structure becomes apparent. It is both overwhelming and deeply unsatisfying. There are just so many mindbogglingly weird or straight up bad design decisions there's a chance this game will go down the MGSV route of incredible potential completely squandered by baffling design.

This game is the anti-immersive sim.

Some things that are just insane to me:

- There is no exploration. No adventure, no sense of wonder. You go in a menu, you press a button and you fast travel via a loading screen. Flying around in space is unrewarding and useless. You don't descend on a planet, you cannot fly around on a planet. Or otherwise move around on a planet. The tile based procedurally generated areas are terrible. I landed on the moon facing Earth because I wanted to see the sights and it just rendered some random area. Earth wasn't even in view. There was a mission where I had to save a dude from a crashed ship. I was on another planet in another system, I went into the menu, selected his location, clicked to go there, I got a loading screen and it literally spawned me right next to the guy with my ship 500 meters away. No travel cinematic, no landing sequence, it instantly warped me to a completely different system next to the objective. Just dreadfully bland design.
- The game knows there is no exploration or adventure because it tries to remove travel every way it can. You can fast-travel 500 meters from your ship and be in a completely different system one loading screen later. There's no feeling of being a part of the universe, everything feels extremely videogame-y. You can literally fast-travel to the front door of the Lodge from another system.
- New Atlantis' techno utopia seems impressive at first but after the initial "ooh" and "aah" wears off it is an incredibly badly designed area. It is immense, cumbersome to navigate (no map, lmao. How do you have this huge hub area and no map), has zero redeeming qualities other than nice vistas and on a meta level has terrible technical performance with framerates going from 50 to 20.
- The dialogue system is terrible and feels like I'm playing Skyrim, only not in a good way. The way the camera is positioned, the hard cuts to people talking, the bizarre way companions look straight at you even when talking to someone else. It's a system from two generations ago with almost zero improvements. When you're in space and another ship hails you, it zooms in on the ship as if the ship is talking, lmao. Would it really kill you to add a screen to the cockpit where you see someone else talking to you? This game was in development for like 8 years, for fucks sake. Where's the immersion? I just don't understand how this happens.
- Literally every mission is a fetch quest. You go somewhere, flip a switch or shoot the place up, get some info or talk to someone to get a new location, rinse and repeat. Aggressively mediocre game design.
- The way it dunks sidequests on you is hilarious. Literally every quest in New Atlantis is some random asshole walking up to me saying "hey man I heard this lady from the bar say some dumb shit but I don't care, you know how it is" and then you get a prompt to go talk to the lady. I mean, what? I just landed on this planet, I don't know any of you. What the fuck are you talking about? Every time it's "random npc conveniently says something about a situation completely unrelated to you or anything that's happening" -> "go check out this situation". Again, archaic design.

The "NASA-punk" aesthetics are amazing. The style of the game is incredibly well done. It feels futuristic yet contemporary. The music is good but forgettable. The voice acting is solid, albeit a bit over the top at times. Combat is decent.

There are a lot of mechanics in place that give an illusion of depth, but there really isn't any. You fast-travel from location to location, one destination to another. The travel in between is completely removed.

It feels like I'm playing a game that should've been released 8 years ago. This doesn't feel good, man. Imagine playing Skyrim and your only option was to fast travel from objective to objective. If you remove the journey, how much of the game is actually left, truly?

I wonder, how do gas-giants and water planets work in this game? Considering we can’t use the ship within a planet’s atmosphere, nor are there any vehicles (which means no water vehicles either), nor can we dive underwater, what exactly can we do on these kinds of planets?

Whelp I'm fully blown away already and I feel I've seen like 1% of the game. My back of the box summary is expect Bethesda's version of Mass Effect 1. Awkward shooting, little janky, little uneven graphically - but damn once it actually gets going its just such a cool roleplaying game. Its gigantic but quest design and exploration style is also more like Mass Effect 1.

Just got diverted to a major side quest and the way its introduced is pretty cool. And thats while I was doing 5 other smaller side quests.

I say the graphics are uneven because some parts look like last gen. Then out of nowhere some parts just look phenomenal. Just total tech porn with meticulous industrial art design and ship interiors that look cool as hell.

Music is still fantastic too.

Still very early on but really enjoying it now.

Yeah I think its mostly the lighting solution what's at fault. Sometimes the game looks absolutely amazing then ten minutes later another area looks decidedly average.

Half way through day two and I definitely have some niggles, mainly the menus and the way they handle space travel, but loving it so far overall.

I honestly love it. I feel like people are just straight up playing it wrong.

You are supposed to pick a quest destination and go. You're supposed to have your scanner on almost all the time for navigation, mining or item collection. You're not supposed to just fly around empty space. Its like Mass Effect. You pick from a galaxy map just like that game only 10x cooler with more detail and depth and better art design with all the gravity waves displayed. Then warp to your destination and the brief period in your ship is almost like a JRPG random battle. Brief ship battles pop up, or a quest or security clearance to land. Then pick your spot and land. Its extremely immersive to me.

It is complete horseshit that I would cough up $101 CAD right now to play this game on Steam, sight unseen, but Microsoft won’t take my money. It ruined the whole idea for me. I’ll just buy Baldurs Gate, I guess.

I'm absolutely exhausted after my first sesh, but before I go to bed, I must say that I've never played a game that so skillfully combines the sense of wonderment, the thrill of discovery, and the tension of exploring the most hazardous places in the universe like Starfield does. It's an incredibly satisfying blend of world-building, entertaining quests with engaging characters, enjoyable combat, and light simulation. I love that you don't have to wait too long before getting to the exciting parts of the game, yet it still captures the essence of what makes the idea of braving the mysteries of the cosmos so fascinating. I just want to live and breathe this world until there's nothing left to discover.

Thank you, good night, and God bless pizza.

the AI is absolutely atrocious. I am amazed more reviewers didn't pick up on this fact.

Enemies have been glitch out and do things like fly through the air or get stuck in walls constantly... It's just immersion-breaking as fuck. Enemies behaving in such a dumb and repetitive way is nothing new when it comes to this kind of game but fuck me It can take you out of the game and make it difficult to enjoy the experience. Even on the highest difficulty setting, theres next to no challenging encounters. Enemies don't seem to react to your attacks or your surroundings in a meaningful way at all, they often just stand there and take it, even if you're shooting them in the face with a shotgun. I had one instance just now right outside of the escort mission with the guy in the cowboy hat from neon, two android things just sitting behind a box while I unloaded a clip into them, taking 4-5 seconds to reload, change to my pistol and .. they're just sat there shooting at my feet. It's fucked.

I don't wanna be too harsh here but how have we not solved enemy AI in games by now?

This game is fucking phenomenal, only meant to join the vanguard then start the main quest, then did the entire fucking faction quest 😭 the whole shabang.

What a game

well I'm glad someone is having fun.

So far for me it just been a janky / immersion busting mess of loading screens and frustration. I just wanna fly my fucking ship around todd.

I think this is the only game that uses my atmos ceiling speakers when the ships are flying overhead. First time my wife ever said, hey I heard the ceiling speakers finally.
She still thinks the speakers and my swearing and sweating in the attic to hook them up were a waste of time and money. I say crawling through insulation was absolutely worth it.

Definitely not the full list. I named mine “Yuri” and Vasco is able to pronounce it too
But it's in the list :D

Does Vasco only say your name after a specific quest ?

I'm not far, only arrived at New Atlantis, wandered there a lot and did some side quests.
For now Vasco only called me "Captain".

I play in French and I named my character "Miguel", in Fallout 4 Codsworth did not had my name in French but had it in English.
My name in the Starfield English list, I temporarily switched the game audio to English when I heard him call me "Captain" in French and he also did call me that way in English. So I wonder if it only happens later.

Feeling good about going steam vs gamepass right now.

Starting to fall in love with this, I can easily see past the rough.
Reshade and DLSS works well with Game Pass version, I use both.

I’m just loving it.

I don’t get the complaints about lack of exploration. I think people think they want to explore all these worlds, but you know you wouldn’t. If you did l, you wouldn’t do it more than once. Bethesda is respecting our time by giving us a scanner to find all the points of interest in a particular area.

I also don’t get the complaints about loads. I don’t think a load has ever taken longer than 5 seconds. The load from cargo bay to the ship interior is likely shorter than the time it would take climb a ladder to get inside the ship.

I just feel like some we are looking for things to complain about, instead of enjoying the game for what it is.

It’s a Bethesda game in space. Not a space exploration simulator.

I'm a bit bummed that space exploration is less like No Man's Sky and more like...Mass Effect-ish? But I'll manage, it's not a deal breaker. Now that I think about it, it might have been too overwhelming if it was. And the load screens aren't much of a bother...nothing is worse than Sonic 06's loads.

Overall, it's a Bethesda-ass game set in space, I'm loving it.

And am I crazy, or does the space combat remind anyone else of Colony Wars?

Anyone else struggling on lockpicking? Any suggestions?

Are you supposed to be able to open any of them if you pick correctly or can you just be missing the correct ones?

14 hours in, absolutely brilliant game. All complaints I have get smaller the more I play and enjoy myself in this universe.

Is there a way to make money more easily than questing/exploring, having myself, my companion and my ship stuffed full of guns, suits, helmets and packs and then trying to sell all these items to three or four vendors in new Atlantis because they all only have 5.000credits each? Feel like I'm missing something (and partly glad I didn't pick Dream House)

Its a puzzle, you have to account for the inner rings as well as the outer. Sometimes they overlap on the outer ring but you can screw yourself apon getting to the inner rings.

I suggest lining everything up before you set the pick.
