Bethesda did it: they put Starfield in a touching tribute to Alex Hay, a fan of the game who died of cancer before he could play it, which he wanted more than anything. The dedication came in the form of a written note, in which we can read

"To all my friends and fellow explorers," it read. "I'm always with you, out there in the starfield. Love always, Alex Hay."

In March 2023 it was Hay himself who wrote on Reddit how sad he was because of the new Starfield date. The doctors had in fact interrupted the curative therapies because there was nothing left to do and at the time of writing that message Hay was under pain therapy waiting to die.

The response to the tribute has been of both compassion and sadness for Hay and his family and friends who had to say farewell to him too soon. Hay was a prolific iOS developer who improved accessibility in apps through his own invention, Toolbox Pro.

At that point the Bethesda community took action and asked the company to remember Hay within the game. A hashtag was even born on social media to put pressure on Howard and his associates: #AlexInStarfield.

Cancer is an awful disease. Just all around terrible. Good on Bethesda for immortalizing him in the game. Hopefully he is in a better place now, playing Starfield all day long. Rest in peace 🕊️

Damn. That's sad.

And that's a good reminder of why we as gamers need to relax a bit and focus on simply enjoying games! Never know when your time is up.

IIRC there's also a tribute to Robert Altman in the credits, the original founder/CEO of Zenimax and to whom Todd pitched Starfield years ago.

My thoughts exactly.
They could have invited him to play a build in house. Sign an NDA & everything.

If you read it, he was literally on paid meds with not long left to live. It's tragic but I doubt they even had time or the opportunity to move him to be able to play on it.

Anyway, Fuck cancer! RIP sir!
