While somewhat fun, Star Fox: Assault fails to impress. It lacks the originality, mechanics and style of a next-generation sequel. Playing through the game’s opening sequence will rekindle your love from the franchise, only to have it betrayed by the shoddy control and repetitive play of successive levels. And the multiplayer, while dishing out mild entertainment, wears thin excessively fast. It would have been nice to see a greater variety of modes, not to mention better maps and more of them. Still, Star Fox: Assault will definitely appeal to fans of the series.

So is this a rental at best?

Shame because StarFox 64 was right up there with Zelda and Goldeneye as my favorite N64 games.

Is IGN finally cutting back on their massive reviews? I like detail, but some of those 7 and 8 page reviews were getting out of hand. This one is a two pager with a second take included. Staying within 3 to 4 pages should be ideal at max.

7.0 sound about right for how I've seen this game turn out.

Star Fox 64 was my favourite N64 game, I played it for months - this is a bloody disgrace.

No kidding, I spent so much time getting all the medals to unlock expert mode and the third-person ground combat mode in multi-player in Starfox 64. I had a blast while doing it. It's a fucking shame Namco fucked this game up.

YEAH FUCK U NAMCO!!!

I swear to God, if GAF represented the general population, NUMB3RS would be the highest rated show in the world.

It may appeal to fans of the series, but it doesn't really "improve" on anything you would expect from a next-generation sequel, which is the dissapointment (for me at least).

Eh, I wouldn't take the "appeal" comment as all that encouraging. Especially with:

To be perfectly honest, the multiplayer dogfights in the game are outclassed by the ones in games like Crimson Skies, whose physics and control are all-around deeper and more engaging.
uh oh...

Yeah, perhaps my only complaint would be the difficulty level - while it was more than adequate in normal mode, it was rather easy in the hard one. Immediately after finishing the game on normal, I accomplished the same on hard; on my first try!

Hey, but at least I saw Star Fox's father was still alive.(or was he?;))

DAMN

I love Starfox!!

I hate to see one of my fave Nintendo franchises recieve such crummy treatment. First SFA, then this. Hopefully it'll sell like shit and will soon be forgotten.

Here's hoping to a real(as in not super underwhelming) Starfox game on the Revolution.

Will this put a stop to Namco making games for Nintendo?
What, a 7.0 score from IGN? :lol

I'm still looking forward to playing this game

Play it for yourself before making up your mind... it's scares me how much people trust IGN reviews.

I wonder what possessed them to release this as a rental exclusive.

Believe me it's a blessing. While it's not a bad game in the normal sense, it's not good. This gives people a chance to find out for themselves while the cost is minimal and before the cheerleaders make you waste your gaming budget. It's not going to be scoring very highly at any reputable review sites.

Maybe they thought it would be in their best interest for people to rent the game first before their plunked their money on the game and comeback later to curse Nintendo?

No one should ever base their opinion on someone elses'. Play the game, then come on to the forums and spread your opinions like viruses.

I don't want regurtations of what IGN said. Sounds like IGN didn't like, and if many of the things are as bad as they say... I'll be upset, because yes, Starfox 64 was absolutely stunning.

Can't wait to play it though!

Namco is good for RPG's and not much else it seems

*awaits the flak from the Soul Calibur fans :P

Soul Calibur fans are pansies. You should be looking out for the Mr Driller, Klonoa and Katamari fans, mother fucker!

I don't think this invalidates Namco, so I have to agree with him cursing you. It's a middling effort to be sure, but they've set some other high marks.

I knew this game would not turn out great. No hype, lackluster visuals, and just uninspiring.

Probably buy Starfox when it becomes a bargain bin.

Whoopsie, I forgot Namco made Katamari. I guess they can do things outside of RPG's :D

What I love most about IGNCube is that you can predict their review scores from their very first article on a game. I've never seen them turn on a game. If they don't get themselves hyped at the first screenshots, they never will (Luigi's Mansion). If they love a game before ever playing, they love it even when it sucks (StarFox Adventures).

Miyamoto needs to take over again before these other developers run the series into the ground.

Although this game probably isn't that bad, it just needs to be a whole lot better for a starfox game -- I wouldn't trust IGN at all after how they rated that boring stinker SFA

See also: Mario Golf and Mario Tennis. Both kind of received "Been there, done that" initial impressions, both reviews ended up echoing the statement entirely.
