I've always loved the Stargate franchise, SG-1 in particular. The way the show builds an entire universe is awesome. Episodes can tell standalone stories, but the writers never seem to forget the little details. New characters can be brought in whenever and characters can disappear whenever. Something that happened in the first season might end up being referenced in a later season at some unexpected time.

Basically, life happens in this universe.

Yes, the concept of "gods were really aliens" isn't new, but the way SG-1 approaches it makes it feel fresh.

Anyway, if you haven't yet seen the movie and the series DO IT NOW. Seriously. It's that good.

US folks = It's on Amazon Prime.
UK folks = It's on Netflix
Rest of the world = Use a VPN if necessary.

Since my GF had never seen the series, we recently started at S1E1. Averaging about two episodes a night, so we're in the middle of the third season already. And it hit me.

I never really noticed it during the initial run, but rewatching the series in this accelerated format, I realized that Jack O'Neill was never the main character. No, Stargate and SG-1 are all about Daniel Jackson's character arc. Even though he is
absent for an entire season
, the story always comes back to Daniel.

Is the action in this show any good?

Oh yeah. There's plenty of action, especially in the later seasons.

SG-1's strength is its story, but it always had a decent SFX budget, so there are plenty of firefights and explosions across the course of the series. Not every episode will have a massive battle, but some of them are happy to let loose with the guns.

I'm still amused by how the pilot features full frontal tits and muff, never to be seen again. Such a tone shift from the rest of the show.

One of my favorite episodes of the series right there. ;)

A bit of trivia, the production team almost didn't let RDA use real golf balls. They wanted to use CGI at first, for fear of a missed shot damaging the Stargate since the gate prop was worth more than $100,000 just by itself. Ultimately, they let them use the real thing.

That was a Showtime demand. Those scenes were actually removed from the re-released Director's Cut of the initial two-part series opener.

Like I said, SG-1's strength was always the story (plot, dialogue, etc.). The producers didn't need or want the nudity, but Showtime gonna Showtime.

and it was much better for it.

anyways this thread has made me sad as it reminding me that General Hammond is dead :(

By the way, can I say I absolutely hated the last episode of SG-1. The
eradication of the Asgard
was treated as a secondary plot device and nothing really came of it. I don't know, it just felt like something was missing from the final episode and I had no emotional connection at all.

The last episode was "Threads".

Whatever came after that wasn't sg1 man

And if just killing them off like that wasn't bad enough, they brought a few back for Atlantis and made them complete dicks.

Indeed.

Although I will admit to enjoying later episodes for the character chemistry even if the ori were complete shit. Vaala and Daniel 's chemistry almost makes Daniel a likeable character (the show might be about him, but he is definitely my least favourite of the group)

SG-1 was the best until the new cast Sci-Fi network destruction of the show.

Why SG-1 draws me in is how it always draws Earth lore into the Stargate universe, like Thor and the Asgard being those cliche aliens we always see. It feels more relateable than Star Trek.

Ive been rewatching this lately and yep still love it, first season is pretty bad apart from 1 or 2 episodes, but its all going up from there, until the Ori at least

I always loved the show for the humor and the occasional science-y episode. The action and major plot was mostly forgettable.
Daniel was central to many of the plots (he's basically there to whine "let's do interesting stuff instead of shooting people"), but not really an enjoyable character. Except maybe when he's self-conscious of his weird "archaeologist + action man" status.

Can't say I ever really disliked Daniel (or any of the core team).

Though the main difference between Jack and Daniel is that Jack is more chaotic, whereas Daniel is more lawful. Or at the very least, Daniel knows the rules so he knows how far he can bend them. Jack is more like a bull in a china shop at times.

SG-1 is great because it knew exactly what it was but it didn't drown in being self aware either, even in episodes 100 and 200.

All I know is the second leader dude, and the chick they added were the best characters on the show. Daniel was cool too, everyone else snoooore.

You have to remember it started out on Skinemax (Cinemax), I think. Or HBO. Soft core porn was practically required, at the time, until shows were legit in their own right. Then, the networks swooped in, for ratings, and nudity was mostly taboo. Except for Jackson's descending.

Never saw that one.

Probably a good thing

It wasn't a serious episode. That's supposed to be what Jack thinks a Furling (the 5th unseen race of super species along with the Ancients and Asgard that they mentioned off hand in an episode early on) is supposed to look like.

God I miss that show... I hope they don't butcher the new movies coming out. If they're still even coming out...

I would say it's really about both of them but of the two I would agree Daniel Jackson is #1. The franchise (in so much as focusing on SG-1) starts with him in the film and ends with him and his arc in the series. The last two films are more group outings and cleaning up loss ends. Even during that one season he's still a big focus. It didn't feel that way at all though watching it as it released I agree. Jack is the main character until Mitchell appears I believe but Daniel is the protagonist in that he's the one that ultimately is the one that is moving things along during the series. I think that is how you would define the two types of characters. Where as in some stories they could be the same person here I think it's split.

We all agree the groundhog day ep was the greatest one of all time right?

Yes it was brilliant.

I can't remember what year it was but I remember finishing watching an episode on TV and then the realisation hit me that it was better then Star Trek. A fantastic sci-fi show without equal.

The other spin off shows where okayish to good but SG-1 was god tier.

If you don't you're wrong and should feel bad about it, to be honest.

The new movies are direct sequels to the first movie (which was actually pretty awful) and have nothing to do with the expanded SG universe. They'll act as if the TV show never existed.

I finally watched this a few years ago, and I enjoyed it. It's rough in the first season, but once it gets going, I had a lot of fun.

Atlantis was alright, but I gave up on Universe.

You gave up on Universe? You are insane. Season 2 is so good. The Twin Galaxies episode and the follow up ones that relate to it are amazing.

Actually the new movies are a reboot. They said it's been too long since the first movie so they're going to reboot the first one before doing a second movie and a third one.

I have all 10 seasons on DVD. I really liked the seriousness of season 1 ... Its a different flavour from the rest of the series. With that said the comedy in season 2 - 10 is still great.

Overall the entire series is a romping good adventure that scratched my Sliders itch when that show ended.

Right forgot they couldn't get old Kurt Russell back.

Yeah it's really stupid. The show is as good as you'll ever get out of anything in that universe. There didn't need to be new movies, the show was the peak.

Agree re season 2 Universe. Show was really ramping up when it was tragically cut short.

I was so goddamn angry when Universe got cancelled, not just because it was starting to get really good (and I liked its deviation from other Stargates) but Atlantis itself was cancelled for Universe to exist... and then they cancel Universe after two seasons as well. Now a lot of people say it was cancelled for other reasons and then they started working on Universe but I still think Atlantis was rushed/cancelled for it. It reminds me of the similar issue regarding the UK show Utopia that was cancelled so the U.S version could exist... now the U.S version isn't happening any more and they left a brilliant show on a cliffhanger.
