Starhawk PUBLIC BETA Thread | Available NOW on PSN

SERIOUSLY!

Yes I get it Lightbox, you want to appeal to the f*cktard Dudebro market who likes to aim with a gamepad.

However you're ruining the game for people who enjoyed dogfighting in Warhawk by dumbing down Starhawk flight for the f*cktard Dudebro market who can't figure out how to not invert their plane or can't keep their Jaeger-bombs down because the horizon line keeps moving. >:|

Manual missile scrubbing is not as functional as it was in Warhawk. I believe we're screwed because LBI wants to keep some level of parity in all three flight modes, which is just plain crap. If the baby-game poo-poo flight modes are there as training wheels, then they need to deal with being at a disadvantage until they learn to use big-boy flight.

Dogfighting flight feels much better than when the beta started, but weapons are still crap. Missiles are largely useless due to ease of scrubbing, and in 1.3 it's just boost to Flak cannon. Boost toward foe. Fire off two, three rounds. Win. Repeat.
Which is why the SP will be my go to experience. All the action, despite its flaws, without worrying about other players' (and superior skill levels) presences.

Nice little video on the PSBlog about crunch time

found here

Most noticeable bit of info is 10 multiplayer maps (which I don't think we knew)

Cheers for that. :) Awesome stuff. Seven more MP maps we haven't seen. Polishing like crazy until the last minute. SP sounds promising too.

Gonna have to play the beta a lot more before it finishes on March 27th.

I think 10 maps is a good number - we have only seen 2 x small and 1 x large and they in themselves have kept me occupied. Each map has so many options etc swell which helps.

I wander if we will get a full map flythrough for each before launch, or at least some idea of what they are like

Some more figures from testing I did. I haven't got around to around to testing everything yet, and it's a bit confusing, so sorry about that.

Destructabilty of buildings/ vehicles.

bUYog.png

What to take away from this:

1- The razorback is a very formidable building destroyer. It's takes no longer then rockets or swarms, and in some cases is faster. But you still need to be wary of beam turrets which auto target vehicles, and the MG loses effectiveness over long range unlike rockets or swarms.

2- The mech is overpowered as we all know, but the assault rifle can and should be used as a defense against one in leu of a rocket launcher. My favorite strategy is to shot one rocket as it lands, chuck 2 grenades at it's feet, and if it's still hasn't blown up finsh it with the AR as you run away.

3- The shotgun is amazingly effective vs razorbacks and especially against bikes. In fact I was able to blow up a bike with just 2 to 3 shots from ~40 feet away. And inside 20 it's easy 1 shot kill.

Perk attributes:

What to take away:

1- The "Larger Clip Size, longer cooldown time Perk" would be a very useful defensive perk. In particular the ability to shot off 2 rockets in quick succession vs a hawk or razorback. The same with homing missiles, flak cannon, and the tank weapons. As an offensive perk I would still pick the perk that allows larger carry capisity, but this is defenity a perk you should think about trying sometime.

2- The "Increaed hawk/ jetpack fuel" perk goes in useless bin. I noticed no difference in how quickly you can get around the map in a hawk, and only a small difference with a jetpack. You'd be better using the "engine mod- increased speed perk"

My first spreadsheet on perks.

There's no campaign co-op, huh? Just some rounds of waves of enemies with a countdown to set up defenses? That's cool, but would have loved enjoying the story with a buddy.

Look at this spreadsheet making fool!

I can't believe I just went 17/0.

In the air. D:

I don't often play in hawks - but on foot, or in vehicles I still really struggle to take down any hawks - rocket launchers lock-on but rarely get to hit the hawk, tanks it's hard to take them down anyway, beams are probably the most effective defense and they are auto.

Not a grumble really, as hawks should be powerful, but it just seems on dust no matter what you do, whether it's bike, foot, tank, jeep a hawk will spot you, turn into mech, landing a few feet away and destroy you within seconds - not even long enough to fire off two tank rounds

Preparation fool, that's why I'm a well balanced killing machine and you're just a hawk flak cannon spammer.

flak cannon damage needs to be toned down like 50%. it's the new beam turret before the first nerf in December.

But it's the only effective A2A weapon in the shitty dogfighting of Starhawk. :(

In all seriousness it could stand to be toned down and missiles made more effective.

HOW YOU LIKE BREATHING THROUGH YOUR NECK FOOL?! :D

Seriously though, I'm just enjoying dogfighting being remotely viable now with the flak cannon.

Tonight I was being more of a base terrorist with the bike and weapons. The biggest problem I still have is disorganized teams. I'm attacking the enemy shit to make them easier targets! STOP CAMPING YOU JACKHOLES! DO YOU NOT LIKE SHOOTING FISHES IN BARRELS?! >:|

Really want to like this game can't always seem to. Gameplay seems lacking. Whoever came up with the auto turrets idea should get fired. Players seem to like to stay back and defend the flag the whole round but they are letting the auto turret do all the gameplay while they just stand there.

Flak cannon is a great addition because finally dogfights don't last 10 minutes. That's not to say the flak cannon is good though, it's terribly over powered. Its the only thing worth using. But as soon as they tone it down it's going to take 10 minutes to kill someone again. What they need to do is remove it again and continue testing with only swarmers and homers until it feels right and then add the flak back in and tune it. Guess they're running out of time though so they'll just slap it on.

Really like the premise of the game but can't believe they're really going to go gold with only a couple weeks more of development.

Just went 11-0 against three campers.

I could tell they didn't know what in the hell they were doing so I didn't rush and crush, but this is why the game is sucking ass.

Don't leave the base because you may need to shit out a new beam turret to replace one that gets taken down! Camp! Shit out a bubble shield! Camp!

The lag was atrocious before the server stress test as well, so flak cannon kills that usually take two, three good hits with MG fire in between will take four or more flak shells and the MG fire and shrug it off. Ignoring the lag issues in dogfighting it's also present in the ground game. In using vehicle pads. In picking up and selecting weapons. That split second it takes for the game to register you picked up a damned power up is the difference between life and death.

People are bending over backwards to congratulate Lightbox for "working with the community", but honestly it feels as though the only feedback they listened to from beta testers was on how shitty flight was before they brought back the Warhawk style speed controls. Outside of that, dogfighting is still fucking terrible. Get flak cannon first. Win. Keep enemy out of flak cannons, win. Missiles are rarely ever useful.

Especially against skilled pilots. There was a three on one dogfight last night and the enemy pilot just kept shaking every f*cking thing off. COME ON!

They really thought long and hard about how to appeal to the dudebro audience with the run'n gun game, and how to dumb down the dogfighting for that same pile of excrement audience.

What made Warhawk unique and amazing was how there was, and still is, nothing like it on the PS3 and rival consoles! Starhawk trades in a good portion of that amazingly unique gameplay for something more familiar to casual morons that will abandon this game as soon as the next Battlefield or COD comes out.

I'm not at all confident the game will ship in a vastly improved state this late in the game. :\

Yes and no. You can enter the beam tower and fire away :)

I'm pretty sure he meant beam turrets are more effective when unmanned. This is the observation that players have come to in high level servers.

Only scrubby camping assholes actually attempt to man beam turrets.

It would probably be better if the beam turrets were less effective when unmanned. Unfortunately that's not the case.

Finally just booted this up.
First thing is I am shocked how beautiful this game is. The IQ is really stunning and the way the art is marrying with the engine is very impressive. Still getting to grips with it but man I really like the little I have messed with so far.

That makes two of us. :(

... you're kidding, right?
No, I'm not. It's ridiculous. In Warhawk if you were getting shot at it was because some real player was aiming and firing at you, and that's how it should be. Running into enemy bases was actually fun because you had to outwit real people. Now it's just a bore going up against essentially AI. If I wanted to do that I wouldn't be playing online.

And I just know someone's going to say, "But this isn't Warhawk 2!!!!" That's not the point, if you're going to make a fun competitive multiplayer game there shouldn't be anything that auto-fires.

I don't know that it would make a big difference in gameplay if there was no auto fire, other than giving people more incentive to base camp.

Maybe if they didn't make the home bases a giant flat field.

I'm bringing up Warhawk again simply because it's a good comparison given who's working on this game. Look at how Warhawk ended up. You had capture the flag going on with the same amount of players on even bigger maps than Dust yet only had a few people defending the bases with a large bunch of others out on the offensive and those defending, though smaller than the amount of people defending in Stahawk, defended equally as well without any of the silly autoturrets and auto-beam turrets.

So there's another giant flaw with Starhawk if you haven't picked up on it recently. Since when did B&B mean the leaves had to be completely barren and flat? The game is lacking serious creativity in the level design.

I have to ask once again. Why do you people want their entire team rushing forward for the flag? Defending the home flag is not camping. People have a number of reasons to sit back in Starhawk, like for one I love just helping out defending repairing buildings and keeping out the enemy. Does that make me a camper?

At least wait for zones mode before you all write this game off.

There's nothing wrong with defending the flag. It's how the flags are defended that's lame. Players are relying on autoturrets to defend the flag for them instead of relying on themselves. Autoturrets should only be a little assistance if it has to stay. Plus there has to be a reason for people to go out and push forward and establish bases.

It doesn't work if everyone is defending and it doesn't work if everyone is rushing. Yet for whatever reason the way they have it set up makes people who would usually be rushers in Warhawk want to defend.

Defending the flag is obviously very important, but you don't need 50% of the team defending and using 90% of the resources.

Imagine a sports game like football. Now imagine if nobody moved. Fun!

In my experience I've not had much problem with teams defending too much but maybe I've been lucky. Most games have competent players that build then defend. The game doesn't have to be won in the first minute and staying back to kill hawks earns you fast rift that you can use to build more. Sit back defend, get kills, get rift, use rift to beat enemy into the ground.

Of course yes people might use the rift to build more defenses but I don't have a problem with that unless there are lot of stupid builds in the base but hey we can dismantle those anyway.

Personally I have a bigger problem with the enemy being able to fly low drop turrets and just cause a mess. They really should have some sort of build timer for putting turrets down or a way to stop them from being planted in the enemy bases. I find it such a cheap tactic.

No.

If you're serving a purpose and not dicking around in your spawn with your thumbs up your ass, I don't have a problem. It's the players that build useless shit in the spawn. That never leave the base. That aren't aware of how the game modes work and allow the flag to waltz out of the base in CTF matches, or that permit base rape due to inadequate defense / strategy in TDM.

The worst thing you can do is let an enemy team set up an impenetrable fortress in TDM and raze your base to the ground. The team that keeps the enemy base razed to the ground is going to win. Simple as that.

At least wait for zones mode before you all write this game off.

If we have no confidence in the product at this point in the beta, why would we plunk down $60 for the retail? :\

I'm with you Bandit, I've been very disappointed with how this beta played out. But there were a few matches here and there where all the players knew what they were doing and didn't waste resources or abuse turrets, and it was a blast.

I'm probably going to get SH at or around launch almost entirely on the hope that Zones is going to be a blast (all I ever played in Warhawk to begin with, until Collection came out. Btw is that going to be in the final product?). Can't expect to win in Zones by sitting in your home base hiding behind a dozen turrets, and even if you do it doesn't matter because I don't have to go near there to win. And then there's also the fact that there's tons of features not included in the beta such as weapons and vehicles. Oh, and that I still feel obligated because Warhawk is my favorite game this gen bar none and I'll take the risk.

If I wasn't an avid Warhawk player I would have left ship a long time ago though.

If I wasn't an avid Warhawk player I would have left ship a long time ago though.

I know I said I was done with this thread, but I lurk because I care lol. That last sentence though is the worst thing about this game. Building a community for this game is going to be extremely hard. Even avid Warhawk fans like some of my friends and myself are passing on this game. It is not just because it isn't Warhawk 2. Prior to the Private Beta I was stoked for the Spiritual Successor and B&B, but then after playing the game it was immediately obvious the issues you guys are starting to realize won't be fixed.

There are some incredibly easy fixes that can be made to this game, but I think the game designers are unwilling to break from their image. The game straddles the fence way to much between hardcore (B&B and clean slate maps) and noob friendly (simplified flight and ground combat and auto turrets) and what ends up happening is the uninitiated are overwhelmed and the hardcore get frustrated. What you are left with is the middle crowd and that is typically a very small crowd.

I wish them the best and to those that will be buying it I hope a strong community develops, I really do. I was super pumped for this game and was hyping it to all my friends and I can't even bring myself to play a free beta. To say I am disappointed is a grave understatement.

Alright I will disappear again.

Signed,

Frustrated fan.

^One thing I learned early on is to ignore CTF. B&B and CTF is a recipe for abuse and LBI hasn't done anything yet to prevent it. TDM is much better (still not there yet but like you said it seems like a few easy fixes and they'll get there).

Which is a shame because I prefer objective based modes (in any game), and I don't like the combat enough to make straight up TDM worthwhile. Sucks that TDM is the preferred mode, especially because it is out of necessity.

Only the preferred mode out of the two. Zones is an objective mode and I'm sure it will be tons of fun. There's also a chance Collection will be in (total guess) and that'd be fun. The reason I don't like CTF in Starhawk is because it revolves around defense a lot thus you get people building everything for defense.

The XMB scroll says this ends tomorrow. Anyone know the exact time? I want to give this thing a few hours since I never tried it.

The flight is terrible in this game. As a day one player of warhawk there was just something fun about flying in the hawk. I hate the dodging mechanics in this game and I hate the fact that you cant hover. I also hate the fact that I wont be purchasing this game now because of that. I was hyped for this game, not so much now.

Meh.

I'll just say it.

I'm fucking disgusted by this game.

So much wasted potential.

Game developers like Lightbox can go to Hell catering to the morons who love to aim with gamepads, but completely ass-fucking the flight so it's so completely brain dead it negates having any real skill.

Which is it Lightbox? Is the aiming all hardcore and pseudo-realistic all the time, or is it only to appeal to the Call of Duty crowd who didn't buy Warhawk; and those of us who enjoyed Warhawk (despite unpatched Normal Flight bullshit glitched) are screwed?

I'm glad the beta is ending. Now I can take some time off, let the stupid reflexes I learned from this game die off and go back to playing Warhawk. Warts and all, I love that fugly old bitch. ^_^

As much as I have surprisingly been enjoying Starhawk on this final day (only because I was playing with Warhawkers I only and none of these new kids), I would agree Warhawk > Starhawk. Wish people would all save money and jump hop onto Warhawk, but there's some invisible barrier preventing anyone from trying a game more than a year old.

Not only did Warhawk have better gameplay mechanics, it also had a better level design, better fictional world, better characters, just about everything. Maybe one day they're make a Warhawk 2 true to the core, but don't hold your breath.

So, BETA over -

Have seen some new vids showing some new weapons etc, will be interesting. Such as the Flak turret could be great against hawks
pistol
flamethrower

Final thoughts anyone?

I hope BnB was just a test for an optional mode. But I know that their integrity will keep them from sidelining "such a unique feature". Besides, the generic as shit level designs don't really offer any hint of true level design.

I still feel the open, risk-free nature of bnb is borked but you guys all defended how awesome it is to drop whatever you want, whenever you want. Go you! Thanks for supporting shit. Way to only think of yourself and not the potential shitty players spamming everything anywhere but where needed/wanted.

Way to feel like my zone idea was limited even though it would have OPENED THE FUCKING GAME UP!

Thanks.

Edit: Shit!

And unless zones works exactly like my idea and not just the way it is with zones to capture, that won't suffice because I don't see why anyone would bother when their current strategy is "successful".

Until you add reason to move forward, and limit resources until you earn access to it, this shit will fail. But that idea was shot down because some of you forgot how videogames, level design and tactics and strategies work.

There definitely needs to be a little more level design. And if they don't add to level design at least make the levels look a little more lively. Like in this old concept art

Space.png

I'd take that over the space map we got in the beta.

But there will be some cool things, such as the new character customization. Like Warhawk with head/torso/legs except now it's head/torso/arms/legs/boots. Instead of one custom color you get two to mix around.

For instance, you can take this customization,

And turn it into this,

The BETA is over? Well god damn it, was going to give it another go. Doesn't sound like I've missed too much though....
The game has amazing potential. If you have 15-31 real life close friends and family, the game would play exactly as Light Box intended. But you'll be paired with the public, if not anonymous clan members, and the game becomes not fun. You'll see vast segments of land unused, home base defended to high heaven, and probably a maximum of two souls wandering the rest of the map unable to drop anything because 32/32 structures are currently in use back at home base.
