Landfall is imminent and it's throwing 150mph winds.

Thing is fucking huge.

oh jesus

katrina made landfall on august 29th 2005. exactly 16 years ago to the day. this is all kinds of fucked up. hope those people were able to evacuate or at least prepare.

heres the Louisiana governor addressing the situation...

“It’s very painful to think about another powerful storm like Hurricane Ida making landfall on that anniversary,” Edwards said in an Aug. 28 press conference. “But I also want you to know that we’re not the same state that we were 16 years ago. … We have a hurricane reduction system in place … that we didn’t have before.

“That system is going to be tested. The people of Louisiana are going to be tested. But we are resilient and tough people. And we’re going to get through this.”

I moved out of the state after the 2016 flood but my family still lives in Denham Springs and the surrounding area and I guess they are as ready as they can be.

Apparently only four cat5 storms have made landfall in US history, and this is a couple mph away from that threshold at the moment.

I've got two kids and a girlfriend in Cenla, I'm currently away from the state, and I'm hoping the trend of the worst of these storms petering out before they hit the center of the state keeps true. Nerve wracking shit, I hope those closer to the water got out while the getting was good.

Let's hope the repairs to the levees 16 years ago were built to last.
They seem very positive and hopeful from what I’m hearing. Plus everyone took it seriously and prepare or evacuated, at least more so than they did back in 05. I have a good feeling we won’t be seeing the same level of tragedy, but sadly the chances are some people will die and lots of homes/businesses will be destroyed 😩

The levee didn't break. It's just been overtopped.

Hopefully it dies out and doesn't make too far inland my parents are in Alabama pretty close to the projected pattern. Stay safe everyone.

Every thing I’m seeing and hearing about this thing is catastrophic. Lots of damage and flooding, lots of people stranded and tweeting for help. There is thing called the Cajun Navy which is a bunch of volunteers with boats going out to find survivors. People are tweeting and retweeting #CajunNavy and #HelpUs and stuff. Really scary shit but thankfully there is only one reported death, but I’m sure that will rise, sadly. Millions are without power. The Mississippi was flowing in reverse at one point because of how forcefully water was flowing in. I’ve seen lots of hurricanes throughout my life but everything I’ve seen from this one made it look like a monster. Hey It's all in the wrist It's all in the wrist you still with us?

im not surprised. we usually see a few videos of strong winds and rain that make me say "holy shit", but it was like video after video after video of of devastating winds and rain, and we will probably see a ton more in the coming weeks and months. really awesome to hear how much better the response is this time compared to katrina. hope they can get to survivors quickly and safely.

Yep. Have a generator hooked up, and cell data seems to be back. Have some friends in Slidell that already have power back. Trying to stay inside, but from looking around, seems the same as Katrina. Had a tree fall on my house for that one.
