So if I want to pick up a controller for my PC that I can just connect and play without any extra work what's my best option?
X-box 360 WIRED (not WIRELESS) pad.

360 controller, pretty much plug in and good to go. Lots of games are tailored for its layout from the box too.
EDIT: Yes, forgot to mention you want WIRED. Unless you enjoy the wireless dongle shitting out on you after a few months and then requiring a solder mod.

I would say a corded 360 controller. You plug it in, it installs it's drivers if you're on Win7 or earlier (I think, it's been ages), and you're good to go.
360 Controller seems to be a decent option and the most used fellow GAFfer, or the PS3 Controller too since it have Bluetooth.
I recently played Dead Space 1 with the 360 Controller. I connected it, turned it on, clicked "Play Dead Space" and it worked right from the start, just like that.
There's more, I heard Valve is making one.

I'm not aware of this, can you give more info? I have a Wireless one, anything I can do avoid problems?

I enjoyed Shadow Man on my 64 back in the day. I recognized it wasn't a great game, but I still liked it enough to play it.
Wait? Really? Get the fuck in! I was getting all misty eyed to some mates about this a while back. One of the many reasons my Dreamcast lives on strong.

I bought a wireless adapter for like 11 dollars in Amazon. Never had any problems with it. Works like a charm.
Any XInput compatible controller will do, really. I like Logitech F710, because it also has DirectInput, so it you can use it with older games. There is a physical switch, so you can either have in X360, full plug and play mode, or switch to DirectInput to use it whenever else.

It seems to be related to a fuse going bad but you can bypass it entirely and the wireless adapter will function as normal. More information about the fix here. As for frequency and prevention...
It seems fairly commonplace but I say this with purely anecdotal evidence so don't just take my word for it. I've just watched a lot of friends lose their wireless adapters over time. Mileage may vary, friends!
Couldn't get into Shadowman back in the day when I had an N64. Would love to give it another shot. Anyone want to be a guinea pig and give this a shot? How's the port?

I can't even imagine how alive is the Online Community in this game, but splitting them even more with such DLC and price tag might be even worse.

WOAH, Shadowman is on Steam? How long has it been there???? I absolutely LOVE the Dreamcast version, I played through it twice but not for many, many years.
Is the Steam version the same as the DC version, or is it better in any way? I might just have to buy it again. Even though I still have my DC disc, hmmmm....

Pretty much. The PC version was the original release and the N64 and PSX versions we're scaled down especially the PSX one. I think the textures we're a little better on the Dreamcast version but luckily there's a recent mod http://www.moddb.com/mods/na22920.
Don't know if it has had anything done to play nice with modern OS and graphics cards but seeing as it's Steamplay and to the best of my knowledge there was never a Mac version it must have had some work done to it.
