It seems silly to me to talk about the amount of content in a Dark Souls game at all, since so much of the game design is based around repeating that content. Not to mention the people that play them over and over again. It's not like it's a "play 50 hours to complete all sidequests" type of game, it's a game that you play for as long as you enjoy. It's the pinball of RPGs.

Yep!
Unless you play to get the plat and then quit, which a lot of people do.
I'm not doing that till post DLC cause like hell I'm entering the dlc at some ungodly ng+ and under level 100.

That game was announced three years ago. And they haven't even started yet? What the fuck was the point of that announcement then?

Hiring people to work on it was the goal iirc.

Edit:
Oh – and you may wonder why we announced our game so early before the release. The reason is that we’re still building our dev team so if you are a talented dude or dudette willing to work in a really different company (gamers rule & boring corporate stuff drools!) on a super ambitious project, send us your application right now!careers@cdprojektred.com

I'm over 60 hour into DS3 and haven't completed it yet.
(I've done a few hundred instances of coop and fought over 150 invaders though)

Sometimes local top sellers lists are fascinating. Here's a snapshot of the Finnish list:

Dark Souls 2 is 7th. Dark Souls 3? Well not in top 10, in fact it's 19th on the list.

Some peeps finish DS3 super quick. Damn.

I'm at the 18 hour mark and making my way through Cathedral of the Deep. Ya, I died a lot but having a blast doing so.

Can't ever see myself beating a game like this under 50 hours.

It's baffling to me as well that people are finishing Dark Souls 3 in 25-27 or whatever hours on their first run, it just makes it seem like they are rushing through the game or something. Or following some kind of guide for all the secrets and shit.

I'm 50 hours in and at the young prince boss, I'm assuming it's pretty late in the game. But I have no idea.

If you have enough experience with the series, going through relatively quickly isn't hard to grasp. Level up (start by getting enough str/dex or faith/int to use the weapon you want, shove shitloads into health and endurance), fight to the next bonfire, do suicide runs to get most items, make sure your weapon is as strong as you can get it in the current area, repeat the boss until you get royally pissed and want to uninstall the game. And then go another few rounds- you'd be surprised.

I finished the game in about 30 hours and I didn't rush, use a guide or anything like that. I mostly just made my way through it blindly. The game is simply shorter than the previous two. I accidentally found one (small) secret area but missed another entirely. I also pretty much fucked up every single NPC questline, so I have that to look forward to in NG+.

I finished it in just under 30. It is simply a shorter and easier souls games than the others, even with the "souls veteran" boost.

This isn't a bad thing, because it is easier if fair ways and better designed. Depending on what the DLC does, I may end up liking it better than the others.

I went back to my 3DS for a while...Bravely Second is pretty fun despite not having played Default. Stupid Steam backlog makes me feel guilty about it, but oh well.

I finished Dark Souls 3 on Friday but then again, I've been pretty much playing it every day since release hour for eleven days or 86 game hours respectively.

I never got this
one can't say they play souls 'fast' by normal standards without someone saying a potential reason why they did it

Guys
if you beat it in 60
and we beat it in 25 (and I remember I alt tabbed for food and stuff a few times, so that added a few hours)

There might not be a clear reason

We also aren't always saying it with the git gud mentality to be asses

I dunno, it's not inherently a problem right here, but it comes up frequently whenever a souls game comes out.

I'm ~13 hours in and just got to CotD. Then again this is my first DS I've really clicked with, and I'm really bad at any kind of third party character action game. But really there are a lot of reasons to take the game at a slow pace so I don't feel bad.

How's the enemy scaling in Dark Souls games?
Do they scale according to my level? Is grinding level worth it?

They don't scale according to SL from what I can tell. I think they do scale up if you summon in a helper, though. Farming does seem worthwhile if you're stuck.

Enemies don't scale to your level. Level grinding can make things a bit easier, but upgrading your weapons tends to have a bigger effect than gaining a few levels. But even with a ton of grinding, skill is what is going to allow you to advance.

so this RL issue is completely driver related
doesnt happen on certain driver versions
happens on 350s not common

the newest one w/ hotfixes didn't seem to have it, but the game runs at 20-40fps on a 980, sooo

Like Deitus said, upgrading your weapon is generally more important than level (although if there's a specific weapon you want to use and need to meet the stat requirements, you don't have much choice). But even then, improving your stats overall is never gonna hurt you post-DS1 (the later games allow you to respec). Grinding can also help calm you down if you're having a particularly bad time with an area/boss.

I have a drake sword right now and just arrived at Blightown. This place is a nightmare, both the enemies and level design can kill me easily. I read that I need the Spider shield which I missed in the previous area somehow. I'll have to go back later this evening.

There is also a ring you can get.

I watched a bit of the GITS game on the Alienware stream. I came in late, and I didn't know that's what it was based on until the end when they said it's name. I'm not sure if that was an effective use of the license.

i have no idea how you people are finishing it on 22 hours

By going the linear route? I finished in 34h. I could have easily chopped time by not revisiting places I didn't have to, or wasting time where I didn't necessarily need to. Some are freshVeggie, some are the polar opposite to freshVeggie.

One day, I actually play a noob game like Dark Souls.

Till that time, only hardcore shit for me. Going back to Rocket League.

I'll be a bit more emphatic. It definitely wasn't an effective use of the license.

I'm really tempted to get System Shock before the sale ends, but System Shock 2 has been bundled like ten times, so I'm a little bit hesitant. I don't want to buy it and then have it show up in a bundle three weeks from now.

Drake Sword can be a powerful weapon early on, but you do need to be careful not to let it be a crutch. Unlike most other weapons you can have at that point, you will not have materials to upgrade the Drake Sword until much later in the game, and the weapon does not scale at all with your stats. That means the further into the game, the worse the weapon is going to be. I'd recommend looking for a new weapon sooner rather than later, since it starts to suck pretty much right after Blighttown.

I picked up my main game weapon in Blighttown (Iaito). Did most of the game with that except the very end where I swapped to Quelaag's Furysword.

Well, it's not really meant to be backhanded. Dying in Souls vs not dying can drastically alter your playtime.

Like when I was in junior high (early high school? dunno) I got stuck hard on False King Allant, that took 5hr. Entire playthrough of Demon Souls was ~30 hours, but that was entire sixth of it, just redoing everything so I could stand a chance against him. That's why I say it's not backhanded, I fully mean it.

As for skipping areas- I'm sure people do it accidentally. I went back to smoldering lake (hence 27hr instead of 25) and realized I completely missed the large part of the area. I thought I had so I went back and checked, and sure enough, I had :p

But yeah, theres also that major aspect. Some people do no pvp, others stand around as sunbros for 50hr. The "I beat <Souls game> in <hours>" only really applies for a showoff comparison with others if neither of you did online or if you both play similarly, which is never the case. I know some people who daze off into scenery for a ridiculous amount of their playthroughs, I don't get it. However, it completely makes sense as to why their playtimes are longer.

I really think the 25hr gap comes from that sort of thing. That, or perhaps certain playstyles are actually slower, since none of the above actually accounts for a 25hr gap except for someone hitting a wall a few times adding a good 10 hours or such.
Like the 'hardest boss' that plenty get stuck on for anywhere from 2hr to 2 days, if you do that in 30m, you've basically shaved off an entire portion on your game clock compared to others.

*Time in souls doesn't really matter, play to have fun, etc, zz
point is, i've completed all of the souls games except bloodborne many times, i have over 400 hrs on all the games combined, i've beaten every boss and area solo, etc.

i just take my time with these games cos i enjoy them a lot, but i've never had this much of a difference between my time and others', so when i say i'm surprised i would love it if people don't get defensive and tell me to "git gud", directly or not

i hate that

in other news what in the actual fuck is the dark souls board game that only wanted 50k pounds is gonna do with a freaking million and a half

honestly i can't see how they can make good on that amount of money cos like, wtf

I can confirm that Thea: The Awakening is as good as ever with the Giants DLC.

The goal is actually 1.5m, because who would play Dark Souls without Havel's involvement?

i wish they would just sell the toys

like i want to play more boardgames but i also feel like 75 pounds + shipment is super out of my reach even if it seems like a good price proposition for the amount of toys u get

honestly i just want a solaire nendo or a priscilla nendo

that's all i ever want

I believe the drake sword will be pretty useful against the ghost later, right? I got lost in my early hours and went to that damned place with all the nasty ghosts. Totally wrecked obviously, and later I found out that I was supposed to go to the Undead Burg first and get that Drake Sword.

Thanks, I'll keep my eyes on those swords.

I don't think the Drake Sword has any special properties against the ghosts. By the time you actually need to go to that area, you'll be strong enough that any weapon can do well against them, provided you can actually hit them. You can't actually damage the ghosts unless you are cursed or are using a cursed weapon, but you can use transient curse items to attack them without the downsides of being cursed.

As for weapons to use, almost any weapon in the game is viable enough to beat the game with, provided you keep it upgraded and level the relevant stats. There are a few obviously bad weapons (the broken sword you start the game with) and gimmick weapons that are basically impossible to make viable unless you have a highly specialized play style (whips for instance), but any weapon that looks decent is probably going to work well if you use it right. Obviously some weapons are better than others at certain things, but you could beat the whole game with a basic longsword and not feel underpowered. Drake Sword is kind of an exception in that it's basically designed to be overpowered early, and then become less useful as the game goes on.

What you really want to look for is a weapon that has a good move set that compliments your playstyle, and then make sure to keep upgrading the weapon and level the stats that that weapon scales well with.

there's a lighting spear in sen's fortress that's a really useful early weapon too

in general you should just grab every weapon you find and fool around with it a bit to feel if the moveset resonates with you

i wouldn't stress out too mcuh about stats, maybe raise both str and dex to like 16 which is the bare minimum of a lot of weapons and focus on endurance for the time being while you figure out what kind of character you want to play

Well true, except the Drake Sword is a huge clutch for beginners because it doesn't teach you the value of upgrading weapons until much later.

The only good weapons against ghosts are cursed weapons.
Everything else can't hit them (unless you use a temporary self-buff item or curse yourself)
The catch 22 is that cursed weapons are dropped by ghosts.
