Steam Deck OLED Announced: Coming November 16

the Ally has a higher resolution than the Switch. The OLEDeck and the LCDeck have the same resolution. Better screen means one will probably look shaper than the other.
Resolution is resolution, is my point. The Ally is over double the resolution of the Steam Deck. Over twice as sharp in terms of PPI, especially given the slight screen size increase now on the OLED Deck. I really liked my Deck (minus the shader annoyances etc) but that screen resolution just killed me.

old pricing vs new pricing.

Screen size looks the same, it’s just the display thats bigger on OLED. Hopefully someone sells replacement.

Dave 2d applied screen protector to half of the 512gb oled screen. Huge bubbles aside, it showcases how matte screens destroy colors.
The light hits the matte screen and is diffused/trapped by it's groves making the screen seem more washed out because it is. Because it absorbs some light, in essence, the screen coating is washed out because the coating itself is "Bright". I've been mentioning that for years.
It is especially evident with oled becuase of higher contrast and pure black levels. IPS monitors are already grey/washed out in black areas but when I had glossy ips monitor, it still looked much better than matte crap.

There is a middle ground with LG oled tvs. The coating is glossy but does not reflect like a mirror. The reflections are sharp but a bit dimmer. Not a problem at all.

Pretty sure the ppi on almost any handheld is better than my 27 (or 30, I forget) 1440p monitor and I'm totally fine with that!

But Hmm. The OLED Switch looks incredible to me native res, stuff like Hades, etc. Text looks really sharp, same with the IQ.

But I think part of it is because the OLED are lit per pixel, so when you have white text on a black background, or whatever, it's just going to look sharper with OLED.

I love how the relatively weak graphics chip runs RE:Village at 2x the framerate of the new Apple A17 chip on the $1500 15 Pro Max. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

It may not be the extra umph of the latest and greatest, but the Deck still can run ALOT really well, especially you play emulation or indies. And the OLED is going to be so nice for those.
I agree but I'm talking in context to other high-end PC handhelds.

Sure on paper, but the superior colors, smaller bezel, higher refresh rate and battery alone make a VERY compelling case for many people. This isn't a sequel system anyways, for that you'll have to stay tuned for next year. or 2025.
I think it's a good handheld in many ways but I'm talking in relation to already owning a SD/PC handheld. If you can sell your SD for a decent price, then I guess it's worth it actually.

The pics i quoted make it look the same, except there are less black bars(display area) on the oled. Haven’t watched any videos yet.

Glas panel seems to be the same size but OLED is noticeably thinner according to Valve engineers. I wonder if the connector is the same…

Honestly if you watch slightly earlier before it’s angled into the light, it looks pretty much the same as the other model. In other videos they talk about deep perfect blacks, and they were given the etched glass versions.
I think there is diffusion and it affects the display somewhat, but it’s a trade off. It’s better than you’d suggest here in the same dark lighting conditions, but it is easier to see in bright conditions.
The etched glass is much better than a matte screen protector, but it still has tradeoffs.

Just a heads up for anybody in the states.

If you are a GameStop Pro member you get 10% off of all digital currency so you could save 10% on the steam deck by buying steam credit.

Edit: I’m not sure this works. An employee told me it must be online only but they don’t sell steam wallet cards online anymore.

There is a lot more overlap between PC and PlayStation, but if someone games in both the PC and PlayStation realms then typically the difference is exclusives. To your point, I own Switch primarily for the exclusives as well.
At this point, yeah, it’s the exclusives player for me. Before Deck released I also used to buy smaller games on it, indies, some RPGs for portability but that is no longer the case with my Deck and later Ally.

Things may change with Switch 2 (if they retain BC), so we shall see.

I think we have different tolerances to these sorts of things. I can manage a 32” 4K display, no problem. I use one for gaming. My work display is a 27” but it’s 5120x2880 (4x the resolution of 1440p). I couldn’t stand 1440p on a 27”. So low res! So you’re not wrong, for you. But lord, 32” 1440p is 91ppi. Horrific (for me).

For other info, my wife has 24” 1080p she sometimes uses for gaming. Jaggies. Jaggies everywhere… (also 91ppi). ROG Ally is 314ppi.

Now, I get why the Deck didn’t come with a 1080p display. It’s just not right for such a comparatively underpowered device. But… sigh.

I love OLED, though. Wish the Ally had that. Can’t have it all at the moment.

Too bad they don't give you the option for no anti-glare on the higher end. I'd probably spring for the limited edition, but think I'll end up with teh 512GB myself. Love my Rog Ally, but that OLED is just too good to pass up.

Put my Steamdeck up for sale just now.
I’ll take a haircut on it, but can’t pass up new gear, better battery life and the display.

Yeah I'd personally give up a lot for OLED on a handheld. But isn't the Deck's performance at a more portable TDP of ~5-10 watts still pretty much top of the line for that wattage? The faster handhelds need ~20W to really start performing, sometimes much more?

I once did the same for the 256gb LCD version and the "dipos I 9H Panzerfolie matt" for the 512gb matte look.
gorv7Np.png

It looks awful, clarity and colors are gone.

That teached me not to fuck around with screen protectors and better watch out not to harm the display

Yeah that's the whole reason why monitor reviews (good ones) always include close up photo of screens.
Pure glossy screens will be clear, sharp and vibrant.
Matte screens are just the same screens with permanently applied 3d matte film.
In case of steam deck, they are actually laser etching the screen. There is no film applied. The screen is just roughed up. So it is still rather clear but but still diffuses light.

You were pushing the Ally hard so I’m curious to know what made you want to switch lol.

The OLED SD is very tempting, still pissed they aren’t offering a trade in program…. 😠

Steam Deck wasn't even a consideration for me when I was championing Rog Ally. The comparisons at that point was squarely between Ally and Legion Go and I still think Rog Ally is the superior handheld between those two. The Steam Deck OLED effectively reinserted Steam Deck back into the conversation for me with the addition of the OLED screen. If I had known that the SD OLED was coming I would have held off on Rog Ally entirely. This isn't to say Rog Ally isn't a great handheld. It certainly is. I do have a few issues with it though but that is primarily due to Windows. I actually installed Chimera OS on my Rog Ally to see if that would be viable, but at this point it isn't since there are problems with it such as sound not working. I think Asus has made some significant strides with their Armoury Crate software and frankly, if it were a matter of needing the best performing handheld I would stick with Rog Ally without a doubt. Fact is I don't play a lot of demanding games on my handheld. I have a gaming PC for that. At the same time, if Steam OS were available for Rog Ally then Ally would be the perfect handheld, imo. As it is, I don't think any one handheld stands heads and shoulders above the rest.

For fuck's sake. They'll take phones and tablets, but not Steam Decks?!

Yeah, it is bizarre. GameStop being GameStop I guess.

I may have to wait until after Black Friday to sell my Rog Ally. Best Buy has it down to $620 this month so that brings second hand prices down as well. If I can walk away with around $500 then that's a hit I can deal with. Ebay and their damn 13% fees really take a chunk out what goes in your pocket. I'm considering swappa at this point, but may take a lot longer to sell there. Guess there is always Facebook marketplace....

I believe Switch 2 will be in its own league. Products like Portal and Steam Deck have no real place to compete with Nintendo. Nintendo is its own thing and people buy Nintendo because it's Nintendo.

If you buy a Switch 2 or OG Switch that doesn't mean you should not have a PS Portal or Steam Deck. While they may be similar in what they do, they serve completely different experiences (games) as far as that goes and can easily co-exist in the same household without being seen as a competitor to one another imo.

Technically they run Nintendo’s games better than Nintendo can so…..

Yup, I'm willing to give up the extra performance for sure, hell this screen will be awesome to stream games from the PS5/GFN/PC at 90hz, so I am also cancelling my PSP pre order.

Wondering if the 64GB LCD model is worth the reduced 369,00€ price...

If you are looking at the old LCD then it would be worth checking to see if they have any refurbs in the EU available. Here in the US, the 64GB is only $10 cheaper than the 512GB refurb.

Reverse groomer.
This OLED model makes me happy as more than anything it is proof that Valve sees the Deck as enough of a worthwhile venture to continue creating new models of.

One of my biggest worries on the orignal release would be that they would pump and dump it and we'd never get anything else like it, afterall it's what they did with Steam Machines, and it wasn't helped by the frankly terrible launch the Steam Deck had.

Luckily we've got an OLED model to look forward to and more systems on the horizon. More than anything Valve seems committed to its new position of a hardware developer, and I'm excited to see what they produce next.

Trying to sell my 512 antiglare SD with a dock and an 512gb SD card for 450€, if no one bites I‘ll go down to 400€. I‘ve seen SDs being sold in my country, for 470€ so maybe I‘m lucky.

Was anybody able to redeem this for Steam Wallet? Mine says it didn't work but the employee seemed clueless AF.

I need to edit my original post because I’m not sure it works.

I went in earlier today and asked and the guy said I’ll scan it and see. It didn’t work so he said is just be online only. Online GameStop does not sell steam wallet so this may not be possible at all. I should have had him scan a PSN card to see if it worked but I didn’t think about it.

Give me the 64 GB model with the OLED screen you bastards.

I agree with Mibu no ookami Mibu no ookami this is just a cashgrab in disguise to avoid lowering prices despite the now significant gulf in performance between Steam Deck and everything else already out/coming out.

Going to have to wait on Steam Deck OLED, I believe. As it is, I'll sell my Rog Ally for $500 on ebay. After $65 in ebay fees and $15 or so in shipping, I'll net $420. Paid $600 for Rog Ally with tax. $180 in the hole if I do that. After all the Black Friday sales end, prices might go back up. OLED will probably be sold out until next year at the point I finally sell it, but that's fine. Rather get more money back for my Ally. OLED looks great, but not that great.

Also, saw this video comparing the various handheld screens.....

That video was great, it puts the legion go back into contention for me but ultimately I probably just go with the deck. I have an LCD deck and was already looking into another handheld anyway.

For what its worth, I dont think the OLEDeck will be sold out heavily for months like the regular, I think itll be easily available after a week or 2.
