STEAM | Discussion Thread - Everyone's favorite PC Platform

Not all games have a demo, and that is their right.
I mean, one could just delve into their endless backlog instead of having to resort to such measures to play something just because it's brand new but that's just me.
I'm with this. Why play anything week one? You know when a game isn't $60? A year later, even six months down the line. Plus you get more impressions from others, detailed benchmarks, and perhaps a patch. I'd easily wait before pirating.

If you don't like it, refund it'll be free.

If you like it, then good you can continue playing.

If you like it and want to purchase it from outside of Steam, refund and get it from there.

I don't see where the issue here?

The problem is that you have to pay first rather than later. That's the whole issue with this method, it means having money on standby.

What's the better method you're suggesting then? Piracy?

As I said, it's the only way to demo games that have no official demo.

Also, what's the possible outcome after you play a demo? It's either you buy it or you don't. Which means you're more or less already prepared to spend money when you're thinking of trying a game's demo, right? Unless if your only goal is to try the demo.

It's just not a good method though.
And I've only downloaded games that I wasn't sure I'd like, anyways. If I like what I play, I will buy it anyways and if I don't, I just delete it. There's no loss for anyone, same result and without having to get my money locked somewhere.

I guess you found the real solution, lol.

I have a feeling some of the SteamGAFfers are going to come to your door and ask if you've heard the good news about Marvel Heroes.

There hasn't been good news on Marvel Heroes in... a good long while.

I did spend an obscene amount of time with it, though. It was a really mindless game you could just lose yourself to easily. I'd never call it good, but it's kinda comforting in a weird way. (Seems like it's lost that by now, though.)

Would take about a week to return the money back to my Paypal/bank account from Steam. No need to wait for the refund I need to use for outside Steam when piracy exists for me to "demo" and purchase, if I like, on same day.

Piracy can be a good thing.

From what little I've looked into it, demos can be a lot of work for anyone to create. I don't blame companies for not having them as much. I think free weekends are a good attempt for big name games that do that, but maybe there could be a system Steam sets up where you can "try" a game for 30-60 minutes or whatever the Publisher opts into. It would require Steam to be involved to avoid work arounds but it'll be possible mostly.

That would be a fantastic solution. Just put on a countdown while the game is being played and require to be connected to the internet. Once the timer hits 0, the game is blocked and you are sent to the shop if you want to buy it.

If anyone really likes discussing RPGs, and is interested in getting a free Steam key for Cosmic Star Heroine, there are still about 40 keys left for the people participating in the voting portion of the Essential RPG thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1434280

I am also raffling off an assortment of classic computer RPGs.

Voting Ends Friday morning, so this will be my last heads up. You have to vote for at least 5 titles and explain why you chose each of them if you want to qualify for free games. See the thread rules for more details.

that's really cool of you

wish i had time not only to do a writeup but also to contemplate and redo the list like ten times like i generally do for game of the year

i think for me it'd be something like:
1. fallout 2
2. persona 3
3. suikoden 2
4. deus ex 1
5. undertale
6. dark souls 1
7. front mission 1
8. xenogears
9. final fantasy tactics
10. mass effect 1

with some really painful games left out that i'm not gonna bother mentioning cos it'd be like at least 10 more

man i'm having a really hard time commiting to these 10, how do people do it...

It takes forever to level in Vermintide. And the magic user bot keeps showing me up.

Level is almost meaningless in Vermintide, it's mostly about player skill and your gear setup. It's very much like Dark Souls where once you figure out the timing and flow for when to block/dodge/hit it becomes easy.

Glad to report that the new Necromancer class in the Grim Dawn expansion is a "proper" pet class (which the game sorely needed), and I'm very finicky with my summoners (if youre not rolling around with a permanent army, youre not a fucking summoner!). Actually think its a better summoner than any of the many modded classes people made (for example the ones in the DAIL mod),I'im super happy with it and with having bought the expansion (which was a little outside my impulse buy but im a pet fanboy so).

Note on Borderlands 1. I got a region lock warning. The Borderlands 1 key from this giveaway can NOT be redeemed in the following countries:

AM, AZ, BR, BY, GE, KG, KZ, MD, RU, TJ, TM, UA, UZ

Started playing Dead Rising. Any advice? I'm getting my ass kicked and those fucking convicts keep killing my escorts!

Don't worry if escorts die or if you miss scoops. The game is short and designed to be mastered. Try and just focus on the main story and complete that for now. If you choose to restart, you keep all your levels, making the introduction easier.

The game is extremely content rich and is designed for multiple playthroughs. It's quite unique, one of the most unique games Capcom has ever made; a real sandbox that they haven't matched in future installments.

I don't really need a tag, but I figured I'd get one to make people jealous. Is it working?

It's crazy how cheap Hollow Knight really is at it's full price, the quality and amount of content is so good. If it was over 20 I would have waited for a sale, so it's price is just right for me.

cdkeys is apparently selling two different version of the upcoming South Park game at two different prices.
The Gold version and US version cost way more than the other Gold version. I guess that there is some region restrictions on this game

They're probably activation-restricted. The other listing is for the EU version.
