STEAM | September 2016 - Good job doing previous stuff, let's do new stuff

Should I buy Enter the Gungeon? I feel like I was saving Steam credit for something but I've completely forgotten.

Got $33 but $20 is going to Dead Rising.

I just caught up on all the Mafia 3 videos. I hadn't seen anything of it, just impressions on podcasts, and that game looks like a great world to explore. Lots more different districts than I would have guessed. Those swamps! Every attack and death looks super brutal though. Scar tech is the new next gen thing I guess.

Crimson Clover is way fun! There doesn't seem to be floating powerups apart from a reward at the end of each level, so it just sticks to flying and shooting Cowboy.

God Eater is sitting at 30k now. I guess it will end up somewhere between this and 35k.
Though I have no idea how good that is. Toukiden isn't exactly a good point of reference.
Would be interesting to see some PS4/Vita numbers for comparison.

Enter the Gungeon is one of the better rogue-lites that I've played. The procedural generation is actually well done, the floor layouts never felt "samey" to me, even though there are patterns to how some rooms are set up. The soundtrack is great and there's a huge weapon variety, and the free update will add even more variety to the game.

Statistical analysis, private profiles are irrelevant.

I would not say that. Maybe people with private profiles play a lot of Sakura games and this biases the results for this category of games.

The (more) correct answer would be that we assume private profile are overall not relevant, but this might not prove true for some games.

Does anybody know the percentage of private profiles among Steam profiles? And what about people who do not set up their Steam community page? Same as private?

I have to give away the Rise of the Triad key I just took from Kagemusha as it doesn't activate in my country... Quote to reveal the key.

Some spares while I'm at it...

I turned off Objective Locators, but I think that Item Highlighting is perfectly fine as there some very cluttered spaces in that game.

Do you have a moment to talk about Steam games?

Here are some impressions for Race the Sun for the few of you who didn't get it when it was free that one time. Also I think there's a more limited free version still out there on places like Kongregate.

The story: Um...there isn't one per se. You control a solar-powered ship that traverses an infinite landscape while the sun is setting (and once it sets, you run out of energy and lose, but you'll probably crash before that happens.) The landscape is mostly geometric stuff meant to evoke something post-apocalyptic, and in later regions you see rockets blasting off and missiles dropping, but nothing is explained. Not that it needs to be, because this isn't really a story-based game.

The gameplay: Race until you die. Then race again. And again. Complete tasks to level up and gain bonuses such as increased score multipliers, extra storage for pickups, and neat decals to put on your racer's wings. The tasks are sometimes things you'd be doing anyway (get through a certain number of regions without a collision,) stuff you might have to strive for (collect a certain number of bonuses in a region, or while in the air,) and some stuff that's counterintuitive (only turn left through two regions in a run - which is pretty rough when they have huge box-like areas meant for you to zigzag through - or do a certain number of barrel rolls in a region when said roll is likely your ticket to death.) The sun sets pretty fast so you're constantly on the hunt for the yellow pickups, which boost your speed and somehow reverse time slightly, moving the sun back upward a bit. You essentially play against yourself, trying to beat your own high scores, but they do have leaderboards. Throughout the game you unlock two other maps: one super-hard, and one that has an ending. User-created levels show up from time to time if you find the portals to them: I found one called "World of Cards" but it almost feels like a cheat because it contains absurdly high numbers of score multiplier pickups. All in all, the games feel great: well balanced arcadey action with risks/rewards, and short bursts of rounds that make you feel like "just one more."

The graphics: As I said, highly simplistic. The landscape is lots of cubes, low-poly spheres, and not much colour. The pickups are glowing wireframes. And yet it absolutely works. There's nothing pretty to look at and get distracted by: it's pure distilled gaming.

The music: Some driving and exciting tracks that change each region. When the sun hits the horizon, the song changes, and it doesn't really sound much like the faster "hurry up" songs in Super Mario World, but more like a "things are winding down and coming to an end" song...that makes you WANT to speed up to deny the game your demise. It's a neat way to go about it.

The length: Took me about five hours of play to get to the last level of achievement, but there's scads of replayability since it's focused on high scores.

The verdict: If you got this free and haven't played it yet, what are you waiting for? If you didn't...it's ten bucks on Steam and while I'd never say "don't wait for a sale, get it right now," I will say it's worth full price, so if you can get it on sale, you're getting a steal.

I just finished a play-through of Army of Tentacles: (Not) A Cthulhu Dating Sim, kindly given to me by its creator, GAFer HP_Wuvcraft. Briefly, this is a visual novel with some light RPG elements (though I never found out what the one of the two stats you have, INT the other being "health", actually does), "insult sword-fighting" without the swords, some sort of army management.

Overall, while I found the writing in the game quite amusing, the game suffers suffers from a number of problems. For one thing, I ended up playing it with voices muted, since I found the voices to be pretty badly mixed / acted, and the game itself was rather janky, with one quest that I could never complete despite having the prerequisites. Moreover, while there are a lot of funny jokes in the insult sword fighting parts of the game, and some amusing trivia, in many cases the answers can only be found through trial and error or by using a special power that reveals the correct answer. And the army management ultimately feels half-baked at best.

In summary, a somewhat meh experience.

Also, spoiler, this is not how math works!

Far as the Shadowrun series go I can skip Returns and just go straight into Dragonfall right?

Dragonfall is better in every way, but you'd be doing Returns a disservice by not playing it. It's a little rough around the edges, but in the end I think you'd appreciate it more than when you start with Dragonfall, Hong Kong and then finally Returns (which is what I did).

Would be interesting to see some PS4/Vita numbers for comparison.

In Japan it sold about 37,000 copies and over 260,000 during it's week 1 launch last year.

I would say for it to have reach 30-34K on PC week one without a discount is pretty significant.

Sounds anecdotal, but if there are certain genres where a disproportionate percentage of owners have private profiles it could make those numbers slightly less accurate.

Those situations will be a tiny minority, for the most part private profiles are swallowed up by pure statistics.

I'm playing Returns on and off and I'm glad I started there. It feels like a tutorial campaign for a larger game, of which I'm assuming Dragonfall will be.

It's really, really a good game though.

Play Dragonfall and Hong Kong, don't worry about Returns for now. You're talking 40-60 hours of greatness versus 20 of mediocrity that might put you off the rest of the series.

Play Returns if you end up liking the rest or you have an OCD compulsion for completion.

It's like Uncharted. Yeah, 1 sets up the characters but 2 is such a better game that a lot of people jumped on board there.

Talking about sales the numbers for N++ (~10.000) are disappointing to see. It was already overlooked on PS4 and now the same seems to happen on PC (even with a base price reduction and a 20% launch discount on top of that).

I'm curious how well N+ did on XBLA.

I remember the original N+ being a decent hit on XBLA. Came out during a dry spell for the system, had a decent promotion, and was still running on the good word of mouth from the flash game.

N++ seems to have had the ill favor of coming out with no one noticing more than anything.

Yeah, the indie market today is just very different and more competitive in general.
I remember how great the Summer Of Arcade promotions on Xbox 360 where were you had five awesome Indie releases in five weeks. I was always looking forward to that every year.
Today we pretty much have year-long Summer Of Arcade with so many good indie games releasing on a weekly basis.

That was bullshit, because in that mission S rank is based pretty much only on your time, meaning if you get the best score in all the area, still you are not able to achieve a proper S rank because of time. There's no really a way to cut it by playing the level from the "basic" start point.

At least I was able to play as Snake here.

every mission's S rank is based on time, not just that one.. did MGS1-4 reward people with high ranks for running and gunning? no. does MGSV? yes.

not a stealth game

also you play as Snake in MGS2, it's Raiden's code name at the beginning

N+ was a cool game, but I didn't finish it because there's like 999,999,999 levels and so I didn't really feel like paying $15 (a pretty high price--and the 20% discount is a rounding error) for 999,999,999 more levels I was going to complete 5% of and move on. Also there was almost no promotion for launch, at launch you couldn't even search for the game on Steam, the port is super late compared to PSN, it's kinda ugly in screenshots and videos (yes, I know it's a minimal aesthetic and keeping the screen clean is one way that the game is as playable as it is and clear when you're playing, but it's pretty ugly), the trailer is just flashing lights.

I kinda feel like it is not going to appeal to anyone that wasn't already a fan of the series, and in addition most of those fans have moved on or had their fill.

It's also only been a week. Long-term the positive reviews will help it float up and get featured in sales and I'm sure it'll grow to 100,000 copies or more.

Every mission's S rank is time based...kinda. Because in all the other missions you can get S rank with no kills/no alarms etc, on that mission is impossible. But the fact you can play the game like a shooter or total stealth means the gameplay is adaptable, and it's a great thing. It's not that I'm defending the game or whatever, as I wrote months ago the game is full of issue, it's a good game but a bad Metal Gear overall, the open-world is a waste of time etc...still, I don't regret spending 200+ hours on it, I had a lot of fun.

Yeah, this happened. I guess someone got really pissed about the fact the cdkey was already redeemed.
Welp, someone did it 101 times on mine. Not sure what's the endgame.
Thankfully gmail groups emails, lol.
