Honestly just get Baldur's Gate II and Planescape Torment. The pinnacle of the genre.

I bought it a few weeks ago when it was on sale, and really enjoyed it. Mission structure is simple (attack X or escort and defend Y), but I love the premise of it all. The controls are a bit arcadey but feels good. I think the sound design is the best thing. Hearing the radio chatter, the sound of lasers shooting, and your own breathing in the cockpit are really immersive. The campaign is not very long and be you should be able to complete it in 4-5 hours. There is an endless mode, however, so it's good for jumping in on a daily or weekly basis.

I'm still kind of intimidated by BG2... The little I've played of POE and what I've seen of BG2, I feel like PoE/Tyranny are so much more easily approachable...
Btw which is best? OG BG2 with mods or the new enhanced edition?
What makes LOVE unique? I'm in love (no pun intended) with that music in the trailer though....

I hate to ask again, but has anyone played AC: Syndicate, and if so, do you recommend it?
I'd personally recommend the Enhanced Edition. The OG game with mods is more flexible, but you have to manually set everything with a series of mods that use archaic DOS installers, and at the end of the day if you've never played the game and don't have specific preferences or mods in mind, it's better to just get something that is set up out of the box and has a more modern and intuitive interface.
And yeah, it can be a bit intimidating but with a couple guides or quick videos, you should be fine. You become insanely powerful by the end of the game, and there are a lot of cheap strategies involving magic if you're prone to that kind of thing (it's fun!).
Alternatively, pick up Planescape if you tend to enjoy more reading, character interactions, and narrative depths. It has more writing than most novels, and the utter insanity of its world is unparalleled. You can spend hours just wandering around talking to people, learning about the universe and your own forgotten background. Some of the best writing ever.
It's really more of a puzzle platformer and it's the sort of thing you'll get the most out of if you like to speed run. Highly recommended though.
If the setting highly interests you you'll probably enjoy the game, though it's definitely just another AC game. If you're intdifferent to the setting and/or are tired of Ubisoft open-world /AC games, you won't get much out of it probably.

It's a good one of those games, the PC version ran pretty well for me I just wasn't in the mood to play another AC game when I played it so I kinda fell off it after about 10-12 hours. The characters are pretty interesting and the setting is nice, plus I think it has the best mobility and stealth game play in the series. So for $20 I think it's worth it.
It's good, not great. Beautiful Victorian setting, like a Dickens novel made 3D, with fairly competent character writing and mission structure. It's a good semi-mindless open world game - good to zone out with while you rough up some top-hat wearing gangsters, check off some more map points, and maybe listen to a podcast or have a nice drink while you're doing it.
I'd say it's worth it, I got it for like 25 bucks and have no regrets about my time spent playing through it.
The variety is about as much as Wing Commander or Tie Fighter, except the missions are 1-10 minutes long. It's amazing in VR, if you have that. You could finish normal difficulty in about 90 minutes, it's all replay on higher difficulties after that.
I never played it outside of VR, but inside VR it's been extremely profound.

I agree. Baldur's Gate 2 is possibly the greatest CRPG ever made. It's simply amazing considering the characters, content, flexibility of the magic system, etc... AD&D 2nd edition isn't that complex and there are multiple guides about that on gamefaqs and elsewhere.
PoE is a good game. However it really its not nearly as good as BG2. Hopefully PoE2 will be that game similar to BG1 -> BG2 jump. Getting Enhanced Edition of BG2 is the best way now and most mods work with the EE.
Planescape is amazing. The old one or Enhanced either way although EE has nice QoL elements for new players. It has the best Storyline and Characters of pretty much any RPG. Combat isn't as good as BG2 but the game is not about combat.
Edit: For fans of 4X I can finally recommend Galactic Civilization 3 with the Crusade expansion. It added a lot of necessary functionality and the GalCiv 3 Gold is on sale for a great price right now which includes all DLC.

I would say it's probably one of the two best 4X space games on the market, the other being Endless Space 2. However the latter needs a few more patches, IMO, and it's not on sale. There is also Distant Worlds but that one is obtuse to newcomers (and he'll, to veterans too) of the genre.

They are on GoG though. However NWN1 was mainly great for user mods and player servers and NWN2 was best for its expansion. That said, neither as good as BG2 and Planescape but NWN2 with the expansion is worth a play through.
Alternatively try Divinity Original Sin, it's amazing in its combat implementation and magic system flexibility. D:OS2 is coming soon as well and it's looking even better.
Yeah I actually bought D:OS and played a bit of it, I should probably go back to it at some point.
I wan't a huge fan of the lack of direction... Now I know that this is probably a big plus for many people but the vague quest text and objectives was a bit of a turn off for me. That was also before the EE came out

Pillars is probably a really good first Infinity Engine style game. Sounds like you started just in time to get a playthrough completed in time to import into the sequel! Make sure to look around that town a bit. There are some new traveling friends and a handful of quests to get you on your way.
And yeah, pick up BG2 and Planescape at least. I also think Temple of Elemental Evil is a really good game that usually goes unmentioned in cRPG reccomendations.
When is PoE2 coming out?
March 2018 is what they're going with atm. If it's delayed I doubt it'll be by much as its been going along well for some time.

It'll get delayed. I'd expect late August or Fall Launch. Either way, PoE2 is gunna be LIT AF! Hype!
I wouldn't be against it but I think they can make their mark if they need to. It'll only be in development a few months less than Pillars 1 with a full team and full tools from the start. Pillars 1 artists were spending nights trying to learn Maya and Josh was singing tenor in the song that played over the first gameplay trailer.
But like I said, I'll be happy it they take as long as they need to to get it right.

Plus, the combat in NWN2 is soo much better than in BG2, Planescape or any Infinity engine game because NWN2 use the D&D 3.5 rules instead AD&D/D&D2.0.

Later on, I think I really want to get Subnautica also. And then either The Way, Stories Untold, House of the Dying Sun, or some other mix of games that add to like 10 or 15 dollars.

Story in Mask of the Betrayer is good. No it's not as good as in Planescape and neither is the writing. Characters that you care about are also not as good in MotB as in both BG2 and Planescape.
Combat is better in BG2, at least the magic combat as the magic system in 3.5 is a bit meh in comparison. Encounter design is leagues ahead in BG2. Amount of content is a mile ahead in BG2. It's just a bettter crafted game. NWN2 and expansion are enjoyable and worth a playthrough. They aren't nearly as good overall as either BG2 or Planescape.
That's said all 3 should be at the top of CRPG list.
Say goodbye to about 200+ hours of your life.
Congrats on your hundreds of hours of quality entertainment.

Nice! That's couple hundred hours of some of the best CRPGs in the business.
Edit: PoE 2 isn't happening till the Fall or maybe late Summer at best. It looks to be bigger then PoE1 and while they do have the tools and the engine, they are redoing a lot of aspects of it. Heck, I will be glad of it doesn't get delayed into 2019 but wouldn't be surprised.
On the other hand Divinity OS 2 is coming this fall and it's looking damn good. Plus it has a full blown dungeon master mode.

Shadowrun Dragonfall is an amazing RPG and it's only $3. Follow up Shadowrun Hong Kong is only $5. Get both but if $5 is the limit, start with Dragonfall.
Actually have dragonfall and still need to play it. Guess I put that on my list to beat during break.

True, true. However since the OP has only $5 and already has Dragonfall, natural recommendation is Shadowrun Hong Kong!
Also, for $10 one can get Trails in the Sky FC which is also damn good RPGs.
