Steam version of Assassin's Creed Shadows does not require the use of Ubisoft Connect

During a question and answer session, Ubisoft confirmed that the Steam version of Assassin's Creed Shadows does not require the use of Ubisoft Connect, but you will still need to link your Ubisoft Connect account to Steam.

In this case, launching the game via Steam does not require you to download and install the Ubisoft Connect Launcher, as the Steam installation already includes a lightweight, built-in version of it.

As Assassin's Creed Shadows comes with cross-save and cross-progression features, linking your Ubisoft Connect account allows us to provide you with a seamless experience no matter where you play. Through Ubisoft Connect, you will also be part of our global loyalty program to unlock rewards and exclusive discounts, including on pre-orders and new releases.

For those without a Ubisoft Connect account, you can easily create one on the first launch and link it with your Steam account. This one-time setup ensures you won't need to log in again.

Was that really so hard, Ubisoft?

Did you honestly think people would see your launcher and go, "Wow, I should start buying my games on their storefront!"

This, or they finally stopped being idiots. Multiple launchers was always an exercise of pure hubris.
It's all part of the "player-centric approach" they talked about during an investor call. They're scrambling to earn back whatever goodwill they can by doing obvious things they could have done ages ago. Like adding Steam achievements to their games.

A barrel full of shit with a spoonful of cream in it is still a barrel full of shit.

(Of course a barrel full of cream with a spoonful of shit in it is also a barrel full of shit)

It's too late, I have to have Ubiconnect launch for other games so the damn thing gets launched with other launchers by default.
They need to make this retroactive with all the other games too.
I know It's moving goalposts but as things are now on PC the launchers are already a mess of requirements.

Holy shit! Can they get rid of this effin' abomination for all of their older games too? I bet we don't have to worry about the new games from now on since EA also stoped using their POS since Dead Space Remake on Steam.

Trying hard to not impose anything and fear of retalation of a game that is already controversial as fuck.

That's what Uplay is called these days?
I'm not going to pretend I'm going to buy it now since I'm not into Ubisoft games, but Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era? In my veins without Ubisoft Connect please.

I was wondering the same. They've been adding Steam achievements to their older catalog of games the last few months, no reason they can't update those to get rid of their shitty launcher too.

Oh, I didn't know that. Well then, if they still want it to be around I'd say do whatever the fuck you want, just get off of Steam versions of your games and everyone will be happy. Like, sometimes you have to make compromises and I think it'll boost sales of their games if not significantly, then by a good amount cuz a lot of people (incl. myself) hate this PSO and either have to deal with it or just don't buy games at all.

I'll say this, now more than ever I'm willing to buy ACS (and their other games that I like and think will be good) at launch after reading and watching reviews (embargo is set for the 18th which is 2 days ahead of release), cuz I don't have to deal with this POS anymore. Good call Ubisoft, regardless of anything ACS and the team behind it had to endure over the last year or so.

Waiting for reviews and then will decide what to do.

I assume the requirement to link a Ubisoft Account still means that there's no Family Share support?

a game without family sharing is an automatic no-buy for me.

Always when i want to play an Assassins Creed game some other title comes along. I guess i'm not that interested in the franchise at all.
The same will happen with this new Assassins Creed game.

Still better to just get it on uplay for me, the 20% discount on anything at any time that also stacks with ongoing sales is worth more to me.

Ubi listen....remove the link "requirement" and we might even have a deal. Just make it optional....its easy af....even Sony can do it.

Eh, once they get off life support Ubi Connect will be mandatory again and Yves will get on knees infront of Tim Sweeney.

Reduced requirements is better, but it's not good enough for me. I'm still not interested in Ubi games with mandatory logins, nor why perceived benefits they want to try to entice me with.

I used Ubisoft Connect for the first time last night. Played some Immortals on PS awhile ago.
I bought it cheap for Steam/Steam Deck the other day and thought I'd have to start all over, but no, it had a cloud save for me.

Is your username fits with your role at Ubisoft? :)

My Ubisoft games are only on connect because of Ubisoft's decision to use it on Steam as well, they must be desperate to drop this at last, but as stated above, will it last, you shouldn't need 2 launchers for 1 game, ever!

Great news about the launcher, but I see they're still making having an account with them mandatory to play the game.

Huge step in the right direction. Apparently I own quite a few games through ubisoft connect (though I didn't realize i did; I genuinely don't remember buying them) and yet I refuse to play any of them because I don't want to deal with another launcher and login. I actually got a free copy of Shadows through a promotion (probably how I got all of those others) but because its an ubisoft connect game, I won't be playing it. The hassle isn't worth what I expect to be a mediocre game at best.
