Steins;Gate |OT| Name Subject to Change

I thought I read that this game has English voice actors, but then I see that it doesn't have an English dub? Can someone explain please?
I don't believe an English voice cast was ever confirmed for the game. It's simply receiving the Western treatment for the subtitles while retaining the Japanese voice tracks.

Why would they add one at this point?

I just turned off the Japanese voices as I grew tired of reading the text and having to wait for them to finish talking.

I remember reading somewhere that the iOS version was getting an English dub?

the reason I'm asking is because I want to play this game on the ps3 with other people watching and not have to read out loud every line myself.

Definitely would've preferred it with English dub so I could listen to the lines being acted out. I imported VLR because the EU wasn't dubbed.

Definitely want to buy this because of all the hype. Can someone who's in the know answer a few quick questions?

1) If I don't have any particular reason to go portable and only care about performance, is it better to go with the Vita or PS3 version?

2) Is there an NA CE coming or should I just buy from Amazon now?

PS3. NA CE is delayed, buy it from Amazon.

They're exactly the same, performance-wise. The PS3 ver. uses upscaled CG from the pc version, Vita is all native.

Not sure about the 1080p thing. People said it was 1080p on PS3 before it released but then people reported it isn't?

Assets are 720p like the Xbox 360 version, but the game can output at 1080p, which caused the confusion. The new opening video might also be 1080p. The only assets "upscaled from PC" are the ones edited with English text (mostly background images that show up for a single scene).

Ohhh ok. I think I can wait for the CE. I quite liked it but didn't want to import.

you need to import it either way. only Rice is selling the NA CE as well. they announced that they sold out so i dunno if you can get it anymore. Amazon is getting one with just an artbook. don't think it's the same one.

This game would be so good if it had an editor. One who looks at unnecessary otaku trope scenes and goes "Nope, nope, nope."

Do you mean the game itself or the localization?

The game itself. The first half is too long and slow, and scenes like the shower and cooking scenes are just stupid.

Aside from some text formatting problems (and the lack of an English voice track) the localization is pretty good. Some very funny moments.

Oh, that's Japan for you. The game was developed during the beginning of the rise of that kind of fanservice, it's still tame compared to most games today.

I thought the cooking scene was more funny than tropey, but maybe that's just me.

Wait, so now Amazon is getting some sort of collector's edition after the game's release next week? Is it going to cost more? Because if not, then I will just cancel my vita order and wait.

Really? The "group of males and females have some kind of event -> females (and only the females) are gonna cook, -> but, wait, the females cannot cook and mess up even the simplest of recipes (hilarious!)" is pretty much the definition of anime-trope.

There has always been fanservice in Japan, but the kind of fanservice we see nowadays began around that time. At least that's how I see it, from games.

That's not really true, especially if you're looking at the history of visual novels, which are rooted heavily in erotic games. S;G was released in 2009, long after most of these things were established.

I didn't say it wasn't tropey at all, but it falls short of the normal trope in a few ways (spoilering because of story details).

The first time the girls try to cook is not shown, thanks to Reading Steiner. After that, the characters are well aware of it when they try again, which leads to funny comments and countermeasures (such as ordering pizza), as well as Luka (a girl who does know how to cook) trying to keep things in line. And we're not treated to the typical climax of the trope, which is somebody being forced to taste test (when the girls haven't even tried it themselves, naturally).

I suppose they can, everyone has different reading speeds and what not. I just think it would be easier. Maybe we should just watch the anime?

It wouldn't work even with a dub. Just like with a lot of other visual novels there are tons of unvoiced lines. Any time there is narration or the main character is thinking to himself it is unvoiced. There would still have to be reading.

Chapter 4 of the game. I've decided to watch the anime as well, always behind my progress in the game. Watching the anime's first episode, which would be the game's prologue, I confirm one of my theories.

Suzuha is Titor, Makise did something to her or will do and she's the one who kills Makise, that "satellite" is her time machine and Okarin's message that he sends to Daru is what prevents Makise's death at that moment.

Wound up with the Stardust Sky ending on my play through.
Amused by the fact I got zero ending flags, Kurisu was right all those times, I am an idiot.

Having been unconvinced by this when I started it I've ended up really loving it. That said, I used a guide to get on the True ending path, because as fun as it was, this game is LONG, and I can't say I was particularly looking forward to playing through the whole thing again on the off chance that I made the very specific choices you need to make sure things play out differently.

As far as I can tell the only way you could feasibly get the true ending on your first play is to be massively anal and keep a save before responding to every call/email to see what the differing outcomes are. Even then - the flags aren't particularly obvious.

You need to hit every flag as they happen or the remaining ones don't show up. So by missing the first one, you missed them all.

Having read this handy event map I understand that now.

And there was me thinking the noodle thing was significant because an trophy popped for it...

Just got the game yay.

I am deciding if I want to hold on playing it though. I still remember the show vaguely (Honestly, only small bits and pieces). Or is it different enough to not matter? I could just wait until I forget I guess

It follows the same main story beats as the anime, it's just expanded with some alternate endings. But if your memories of the show are pretty vague I don't think it would hurt your enjoyment of the game.

Sounds good. My vita is currently dead anyways and I gotta find the charger. Maybe I'll look slowly so I can forget the shows ending before I start. On the shelf it goes for now.

I know nothing about the series, but am a fan of certain VN (not really into anime all that much). The artwork was intriguing and the plot sounds pretty cool. Should arrive just in time for my trip, so should keep me busy on my off-time.

Hoping there isn't a lot of high-pitched giggling and squealing?
