Stella Deus is upon us, my bitches!

with non-cinematic presentation, i'd never want that. i'd hate to have to sit through all of the spoken dialogue, even if the acting were super good.

I understand, and I'd have to agree. Optimally, I'd prefer 3 choices: Text, Voice, or Text & Voice (as I had described above). That way you can skip the shit, read it quicky, or suffer.... er, enjoy this marvelous voice acting.

So how deep is the level of customization in this game? FF Tactics deep?

No way. The game is somewhat shallow in terms of options. It's more like a halfway between Fire Emblem and FFT or a N1 game. For instance there's only like 6 classes in the entire game and people can't change classes and instead can only upgrade to the next class type within the class.

But the alchemy is freaking perfect. It's fast, user-friendly, and is logically made. Beats the hell out of SO3 and DQ8's synthesis for sure.

And I don't get why people have to put down N1 games in every non-N1 SRPG thread. N1 games are not about difficulty, they're about having FUN. Riding mecha, throwing houses, and then flying out and slicing someone in half with a samurai sword is A LOT OF FUN. Personally I think N1 SRPGs aren't even part of the same SRPG genre that FE/FM/FFT/etc.. are. It's more like their own sub-genre which is not any worse but just different.

The experiences I had with Disgaea and Makai Kingdom were the most fun I've ever derived from SRPG playing.

It's been such a long time since I've played a SRPGs where they give u a fixed cast of unique characters u can control (and each have their own personality/story) and have no "create a character" feature like the old Shining Force 3.

Is Stella Deus like this? Then I'm getting it for sure :D

Powerlevelling and animu jokes aren't fun.

Can you go into detail with the alchemy process, or at least a general overview? I became particularly addicted to SO3's item creation, even if it was thoroughly unintuitive without the assistance of a guide/faq/chart/table.

Found this list of Classes on gfaqs:

Fighter -> Warrior -> Gladiator
Swordman -> SwordMaster -> Brandisher
Spearman -> Squier -> Vanguard
Axe Warrior -> Axe Master -> Berserker
Thief -> Bandit -> Shadow
Iron Fist -> Grappler -> Ultimate
Archer -> Hunter -> Sniper
Cleric -> Priest -> High Priest
Alchemist -> Master Alchemist -> Sage
Forester -> Ranger -> Grand Master
Arch Bishop -> Pope -> Apostle

Main characters' last classes:

Sfida - Samurai
Ligne - Artemis
Adonis - Xenoglossia
Gray - Holy Lancer
Gallant - King of Terra/Terror
Lumen - Deity
Prier - Savior
Seion - Duel Master
Tier - Puncration

I don't know for Viser, Jade and Ekhidna.

You can also have mercenaries join your party besides the story characters. Picking this one up later today for sure.

It does seem like N1 always manages to get attacked in threads like this. Personally I love the freedom, wackiness and micromanagement n1 offers in their games; there's so much to do and so many ways to approach it. Makai Kingdom better be as good as you say, bebpo!

it appears the game has no hd support :(

oh well, i played for like 10 minutes and i find it hard to get over the bad voice acting and cg sequences.

graphics are nice but :/ i dunno.

Did you get to any actual gameplay? Not sarcasm, I haven't put my copy in yet, I'm curious. I've heard mostly good things about the game except the dubbing, but there's probably an option to turn the voices down/off.

We got our copy today, did anybody else's copy NOT have the usual security sticker on top (that has the game's title, etc)? My copy was in the factory shrink wrap, but no sticker. I'm hardly complaining, I hate the things, but I thought that was pretty odd.

I got my copy from EBGames.com, and it had no sticker.

Gamestop (retail store, the one closing on Friday in midtown NY). Plastic wrap? Check. Security sticker? NAAAAAY.

Edit - Not the last copy, not a gutted one.

What's all this then?

PS2 (not Two) + Network Adaptor + Sony 40gb HDD + HD Loader (3rd party software) = wooooooooo!! No load times! No more CD read errors!

Please tell me more about HD loader, most games compatible?

Would there be something like this for Xbox? If only for Jade Empire?

Do a search, there are like 3 or 4 threads within the past 2 weeks discussing it in detail (what convinced me to finally get it.) Costs $25, and literally allows you to install any PS2 (not PSOne) CD or DVD game to your HDD and run it off that, without disc, with minimal load times. The only games that DEFINITELY do not work or Dual Layer DVD9 games. I think there are a small handful of older games that also do not work. Something like 95 or 96% compatability, IIRC.

And no, Stella Deus does NOT seem to work. I get the usual splash screen telling me that there is no file in my memory card (first time I boot the game up) and then a dead black screen. Tested the game by running it off the DVD (instead of the HDD) and it worked fine. Piiiiity. :(

I think there might be versions of HD Loader still out there somewhere, but definitely not in the original form, which got shut down like a year ago. As for Jade Empire, its called "hacking your Xbox." I'm pretty sure you can get it done at just about any specialty shop online, or you can just get one pre-modded.

Did you try out all the different modes?

HD Loader is available on DVD (crucial for me, who's PS2 is having a harder and harder time running CDs) from consolesource.com

That's where I and a few other GAFfers here got it from.

Mine too(S.F. CA), I had them check and all the store copies were like that.

Yeah, the lack of a security sticker was definitely head scratching to me. I know mine hasn't been opened by the store and rewrapped because I got there like 5 minutes after the UPS guy was leaving.

Mine also came without the security label as well. Maybe Atlus had to get the game printed elsewhere due to the reversable cover. I hope the game is worth it...I waited in line close to 25 mins at EB to pick up my prebook (one cashier and a store full of brats and moms...my luck!)

Before I go back to playing, I figured I'd post some brief impressions.

Just finished playing for about two hours. So far, I'm absolutely loving it. It reminds me ALOT of Final Fantasy Tactics; The gameplay, the menus, the map, the music (same composers). It even has the "try on" option in shops, which I've always liked having.

The sprite characters all look really nice and the graphics overall are pretty pleasing to look at. The majority of the cutscenes are in-game, with the sprite characters boasting alot of different animations; A big plus in my opinion.

Battles are fun and fast paced. As I said before, the game feels alot like FF Tactics. The best addition to the battles so far seems to be the team attacks where you can join with multiple other party members to do cool looking combo moves with massive damage.

The quest and fusion systems are very easy to use and pretty fun. You can accept yellow quests that activate cutscenes where you'll either succeed or fail depending on your stats or choices you make, or blue or red quests that you actually have to go to new locations and fulfill their requirements. Also, the alchemy fusion system is really simple and it's easy to start fusing items right from the get go.

The voice acting is atrocious. I had to turn it off after the first chapter not only because it was so bad, but because it was just completely distracting me from the story. Like Ferricide said earlier, it's basically a complete lack of direction. That and the fact that the main character's VA can't convey emotion for shit.

anyways, does this game have a plot (like FFT) or none to speak of (disgaea)
YES! Lots of story, penned by Ryo Mizuno, author of the Record of Lodoss War novels. So far, it's good. Lots of characters, lots of politics.

So far, my impressions are:
If you like Final Fantasy Tactics or S-RPGs in general, you're probably going to absolutely love this game. It doesn't seem to have the overwhelming sense of freedom of a Nippon Ichi game so far, but whether that's a good or bad thing is up to preference. Personally, I love it.

Because you can LEVELGRIND yourself past ALL the challenges...just like every other SPRG on God's green Earth. Damn them for that. DAMN THEM. :lol

Stella Deus? I'm getting that peaceful, easy feeling that I got from FFT while playing it; deep, dark, and difficult, with beautiful music accompaning it. I'm very, very happy those two got reunited again; now if only someone would rent them out a philharmonic for an RPG OST...

yeah. i didn't really have the space to address this in the OPM review -- which isn't out yet so be good and don't ask what i gave it -- but the music is just divine. super sweet soundtrack.

I picked up Paper Mario 2 yesterday for $25, so i'm going to hold off on this for a little while. Worst case scenario, i order it directly from Atlus for $5 more.

Double sold! That's the main reason I picked this game up; I like SRPG's, but I don't have the time anymore to grind my people to level 2000 for a hundred hours anymore. Excellent, can't wait to start on this.

Three hours into it, and I'm liking this game a LOT. Much better than the sloppy, broken, Nippon Ichi games.

Same composer as FFT? Are you fucking kidding me?

Also, I'm glad to see some Nippon Ichi hate in this thread. For a while I thought I was alone in this cold world...

I believe Hitoshi Sakimoto was in fact involved in the soundtracks for FFT, FFTA, and Stella Deus.

Picked up my copy yesterday. No security sticker. Kind of odd. I instantly flipped the insert over though. The art used for both sides is great, but I preferred the inside one. Still haven't gotten a chance to put any time into it though.

No security sticker for me either! FYI: Stella Deus is on sale at Fry's for $39.99

Yeah, I personally don't dis N1 SRPG's. I like them for what they are: powerleveling games with some nice humor.

It's interesting how people will pan Hoshigami because it's probably the hardest SRPG ever made, and then people will pan Disgaea & etc., because they're mostly powerleveling games with no challenge. :/ geez can't people pan truly crappy SRPGs like Vandal Hearts 2 instead?

Eternal Eyes, Rhapsody, Vandal Hearts 2...they will break into your house and KILL YOU IN YOUR SLEEP.

I wouldn't call NI RPG's solely level grinders, although its a big part. They're just really alternative from the norm all around.

HDLoader support

I got Stella Deus to work with HDD support. You have to go to a certain website *scene* to download a patch. The patch itself is legal. You need an original copy of HDLoader or somehow get a "clean" HDLoader.elf. You then patch that elf and use the memory card exploit. I got Gran Turismo 4 and God of War to work with HDD with the patched hdloader too.

Wasn't Rhapsody an N1 game too?
yes, although it's not really an SRPG. it's a regular RPG with (incredddddddddibly easy) SRPGish battles. it was cute for a while, but the dungeon design is so budget i got sick of it and gave up.

and then sold my copy for $100+ on ebay. whee!

As far as I can recall, he also had a part in Ogre Battle, Ogre Battle 64, Breath of Fire V, Gradius V, Legaia Duel Saga, Radiant Silvergun, Tactics Ogre, Vagrant Story, and some other obscure Japanese games I can't recall at the moment.
