Before I go back to playing, I figured I'd post some brief impressions.
Just finished playing for about two hours. So far, I'm absolutely loving it. It reminds me ALOT of Final Fantasy Tactics; The gameplay, the menus, the map, the music (same composers). It even has the "try on" option in shops, which I've always liked having.
The sprite characters all look really nice and the graphics overall are pretty pleasing to look at. The majority of the cutscenes are in-game, with the sprite characters boasting alot of different animations; A big plus in my opinion.
Battles are fun and fast paced. As I said before, the game feels alot like FF Tactics. The best addition to the battles so far seems to be the team attacks where you can join with multiple other party members to do cool looking combo moves with massive damage.
The quest and fusion systems are very easy to use and pretty fun. You can accept yellow quests that activate cutscenes where you'll either succeed or fail depending on your stats or choices you make, or blue or red quests that you actually have to go to new locations and fulfill their requirements. Also, the alchemy fusion system is really simple and it's easy to start fusing items right from the get go.
The voice acting is atrocious. I had to turn it off after the first chapter not only because it was so bad, but because it was just completely distracting me from the story. Like Ferricide said earlier, it's basically a complete lack of direction. That and the fact that the main character's VA can't convey emotion for shit.
anyways, does this game have a plot (like FFT) or none to speak of (disgaea)
YES! Lots of story, penned by Ryo Mizuno, author of the Record of Lodoss War novels. So far, it's good. Lots of characters, lots of politics.
So far, my impressions are:
If you like Final Fantasy Tactics or S-RPGs in general, you're probably going to absolutely love this game. It doesn't seem to have the overwhelming sense of freedom of a Nippon Ichi game so far, but whether that's a good or bad thing is up to preference. Personally, I love it.
