Uh

Exactly what they're doing?
Since when? Do they let their Western studios touch it?

Are there 100s of people working on code and modelling in Chengdu and Dehli and I don't know about it?

XPEC is working on FFXV. They got a pretty good track record...

Here's a postmortem for the outsourcing in UNCHARTED 3 by Naughty Dog and XPEC.

Naughty Dog outsourced the game to XPEC, and XPEC seemingly developed the Yemen and the shipyard sections in the game. As you'd expect, communication between the two parties is a pretty big deal. They also explain how concept art communicated the vision of a project better than anything.

There's also a bunch more about Agile Development that they talk about which is pretty cool.

HexaDrive is also working on FFXV. These two companies have already been publicized.

There are undoubtedly other companies too, but we haven't heard about them.

I was under the impression that Square simply renamed Versus XIII to XV. I had no idea that it was a significantly different game.

This is blowing my mind right now.

They claimed they were keeping things the same for a long, long time now.
Then they changed their minds.

Was referring to before.

XIII, LR - tri-Ace Involvement.

Although for 15, at Taipei Game Show last year, they showcased an area being developed by a local studio.

edit: beaten by wmlk what a surprise

I mean... it's still the same basic story. It's not like it's radically altered at all from what they first showed off gameplay/plot/whatever wise.

Its a Fantasy series, they are not supposed to sound common or traditional , Sephiroth may be a weird name but it sticked as a villain.

Snow or Cloud or Terra may sound stupid, but they are fairly simple names.

Yes you have Lightning
Claire
, Sera, Cid, Luna, Noctis, Layle, Tidus, Yuna, etc.

But while they sound weird, it seems for many people the names dont lose appeal, and its the same for other games, or comics, or manga or movies..

Didn't say that using that sort of naming methodology couldn't work. I'm just saying that sometimes it doesn't. As such there is the occasional, "miss," in the franchise.

Furthermore, I'd assert that Luna is not the worst. I wouldn't call it a great character name, buuuut, it's not the worst.

Clearly these babies are not being named by parents, but are instead being raised by Square Enix marketing directors.

I clarified my statement.

Man... if the game opens you at Duscae... that could be rough. The original idea was similar to FF7's transition from Midgar to the world map. ;-;

Oh okay. Man I just want this game to be good. So much is riding on it. We haven't had a good Final Fantasy in almost a decade. XIII for me was awful.

People wanting a quality FF experience should really play FFXIV. It may be an MMO but it has one of the best single player experiences of a FF in a long ass time

Yep. Good story, great localization, great world building, fun battle system, amazing music... FF14 is the best FF game in nearly a decade for me.

FFXIV is worthy of the series, but it still has flaws. For example; the main scenario from 1 - 43 is literally shit. I felt like I was playing Skyrim again in terms of storyline. Luckily, it has improved immensely since that time.

Just assume everything from Versus XIII is now gone and if anything old happens to show up in XV, you can be pleasantly surprised. :p

I wouldn't say that FFXIV replaces a solid, classic, singleplayer FF experience, but the devs certainly have their hearts in the right place. It's the one thing that gives me hope for the future of the company.

I got around to playing The Last Story a year back though and it actually felt like a proper "Final Fantasy" to me, just a shame that it's a technical mess in spots.

I play 14 nearly every day. It's more than cemented its place as a top tier Final Fantasy for me.

When nothings been accomplished for that long it's probably for the better.

There are times when I wish that July 2012 rumor was true and XV was its own original product. Noctis(by his game's release) and Lightning(she and him will certainly appear in KH3) will be over a decade old and by the time an inevitable XVI comes out these two will be 15+ years as the faces of FF.

I've got it open in another window as we speak, so I can probably agree that it's fairly high up there for me.

Part of me does hope that the people in charge of 14 get put in command of 16.. or 17, they've still got loads of expansions to work on before that though.

I think it would be too costly to totally throw away some of the 2011 visual works cutsences...so even if the party scene is cut, I'd assume the Noctis in the car in the Roen suit will still be in...hopefully.

Starting in Duscae with a car though... Might be effective enough.

I liked the original scenario better though :(

Ouch, that'd the equivalent of FF1 to FFXI O_o
I fully expect FFXVI to release before 2021 though :p

I doubt you'll start off in Duscae. The game will likely open with a set up to the events going on and start with Noctis and crew before leaving Insomnia. From what they talk about in Episode Duscae, it would seem "some" events went down to the point that there is a clear objective because of it. You aren't just going to Cauthess "because" you want to. There's a reason for traveling to the Disc, and a reason behind the reason.

From what it seems:

Opening (please be good) -> gang travels to Cauthess -> returns to Insomnia ruins (meets Regis?) -> Goes to Altissia/Accordo to meet Luna

But in truth.. How a lot of us feel, including me.

I sure hope I am wrong but...... rewatching the TGS and Jump Festa trailer after knowing all the change and that this is a reboot, they seem to have completely removed the famous line "This is a fantasy based on reality" which was last seen in the E3 2013 trailer. I don't think we are going to see this from now on.

It is time to accept Final Fantasy XV is a completely different game from Versus.

I tried really hard to get into ARR ,but the game is very much an MMO that you need actual fun people to play with to enjoy it.

Its really dry and mechanical otherwise.

Its in a different category of games altogether and almost stereotypically MMO.

I would recommend FFXIII(at least the first game) over that game any day as single player FF experience.

No, people on the staff at nearly every level have called it a fantasy based on reality.

It's just that we don't have those Nomura trailers anymore.

Anyway, I always felt that tag was skin deep, even when Nomura was the director.

I have tried hard to play FF XIV too. Heck I bought 3 month subscription just to get into it. Sadly, it never clicked with me. Part of the reason was having no friends to play it with, but also the repetitive and dull sidequests.

I am sure the game is good but I just can't get into it. I will give it another try once Heavensward is out.

I think the concept of 'fantasy based on reality' is still there. Tabata mentioned it before, and also in the latest tech demo video one of the developer says "Final Fantasy XV is a fantasy based on reality."

However I do feel all those Shakespeare quotes we have seen in all those Versus trailer is gone..

Good to know.

From what it seems:

My guess(speculation, of course), is that Noctis and crew are sent to investigate something regarding Lestalum and Titan(remember, the significance between the two is somewhat important), and while they are gone, shit goes down in Insomnia.

However I do feel all those Shakespeare quotes we have seen in all those Versus trailer is gone..
There was only one Shakespeare quote, and whether it's gone might not mean much. How the meaning applies to the story is the real thing to consider. It's basically saying that they might not go "good and evil" and might play around with morality. Who knows if they are keeping that concept, or just going straight on "good guys are super GOOD and bad guys are evil incarnate!".

that model will be used somewhere, what a waste of resources if it isn't. square needs to hire a dedicated closer, like the guy who dropped into s.t.a.l.k.e.r and forced the devs to cap the feature creep and finish the damn project.

they waste so much money, and do so much weird, stupid shit. ff14 seems to be an exception, the current team is goddamn amazing.

"All those" isn't that much really when we stopped seeing the Shakespeare quotes in 2009.

When the game was shown off in 2011, there were no Shakespeare quotes. There weren't any either when it showed up in 2013. So, even under Nomura it wasn't significant enough to be in the newer trailers.

Whatever the case, I can't even think of any situation that's as interesting as the party and invasion scene. It really is a bummer.

yea. but I do think these quotes from 2013 is probably gone too..

This game probably shines with friends.

But its also really expensive and time consuming.

Its just not for me at this juncture.

People keep forgetting the core artwork that Tabata teased in the last ATR, not to mention the young kid Noctis in E3 trailer.

I think the game will open with a young kid Noctis and build the story with his father. Otherwise how else are they going to handle it?

Since Tabata also directed Crisis Core, maybe we will get one of those flashbacks like in Crisis Core.

This game probably shines with friends.

But its also really expensive and time consuming.

Definitely the time consuming part is true. I have a huge backlog and simply giving the game a few hours each day mean I basically play nothing but FF XIV. This is one of the reason I don't play or buy MP-only games these days. I am more than happy with SP campaign which can be finished in a set time.

These are just Nomura things. But awesome things nonetheless.

They better make a good trailer for Gamescom, man. I think getting a Nomura-edited trailer is impossible at this point, though. :/

yea looking back at old trailers, I can really appreciate Nomura's trailers. DKS and E3 2013 story trailers are amazing.

But I agree Nomura-edited trailer is impossible now.

Silly Falk, you wouldn't know anything about outside contracted work to help finish FFXV.
I kid, I kid.

On a more serious note, the current publicly-announced contractors so far are:
Hexadrive
XPEC
Video Game Orchestra

am I missing any?
