Game is rough and has some issues. After finishing on release (and watch Kingsglaive) and then again few years after with the Royal Edition with all DLC + anime, I'd say except for Ardyn DLC, the DLC and anime don't really bring much in term of story.
But it was a questionable choice to make some characters go off screen in main game to tell later what they did in DLCs.

For sure lore of Ardyn should have been in the base game.

It was a bold choice to go the multimedia route for the story. It was not done properly I think and it might not be the best way to tell a story anyway.

Overall I still like the game a lot and it's, in my opinion, vastly superior to XVI (aka the worst modern FF).

Not even once Noctis get to meet Luna which is so fuking stupid , all you get are some lame brother interactions .

Epic cutscenes that are actually touching like Squall/Rinoa Ragnarok moment with Eyes on Me , or their dancing scene with Waltz for the Moon , or Tidus/Yuna Suteki Da Ne scene or their separation during the ending ... all of them long gone . You would be lucky if these aren't replaced by some woke shit .

I love how you learn about your kingdom being invaded by reading the newspaper at some little resort you're staying at.

Honestly? FFXV was a hot mess, but one of those messes that i loved navigating. And i saw and played everything there was in regards of it.
There was an anime, there was a movie, we got DLCs, we got a demo with some extra content, etc...that invasion is something we see in the movie i think?

Yeah it makes no sense that we didn't have that in the game but i ended up loving the lore of the game, the world, etc...it has A LOT of issues, the cities were fully created but you could barely visit half of them, etc...

At the end of the day? Weirdly I preferred my journey with FFXV and everything around it than the complete game that was FFXVI for some reason.

but the story is clear. It's easy to follow and it's not left untold. It's just leve underutilized.
We should've gotten FEW HOURS of insomnia before it's fall.
It's fall should've been shown somehow. Maybe we should be there like in vs trailers (ideal).
But the way the did it is also ok. it's just different way of approach in the end.

I can't hate on it. It is a beautiful, lyrical game. It's so full of heart and I HONESTLY think it's good.
And the ambience in some areas.... like when you are done with train level and exit on the tenebrae station... incredible

The battle system is a compete joke and there is zero chance of failing, you can literally auto attack slam the super boss to death, zero skill required. The party looks like a jpop boy band. XIII has its flaws but IMO it has the best combat, best soundtrack, and best overall audiovisual presentation of the whole series. Also the lore is pretty cool if you dig into the codex.

Really hope we get a remaster sometime soon.

I had extremely low expectations for FFXV. FFXIII, FFvsXIII and FFagitoXIII were all announced around E3 2006. I only cared about FFXIII, which I naively thought was going to the new edition to the VI-VII-VIII-X line, i.e. my personal favorite FFs. The Kitase FFs. Well, FFXIII turned out to be a POS. At least, relative to FF standards. It was a pretty OK modern JRPG in general, but it fell way short of FF standards, far more so than FFXII (which I loved despite its weak characters and story.)

FFvsXIII, I just never cared. It was similar to when Square announced IX, X and XI all at once. I only paid attention to IX, because it was coming out first, just a few months from the announcement, and my tiny brain just doesn't have processing power to be interested in anything beyond that. But then there was the added fault that FFvsXIII looked to me like Kingdom Hearts minus the Disney, and too much pretentious Shakespearian melodrama. I was never that into Kingdom Hearts or Shakespeare... meh. I assumed it would probably be pretty cool and fun to play once it eventually came out, but, there was less than zero anticipation.

Years and years went by with nothing to show for it and that was fine with me. Everyone went apeshit when it officially became FFXV. I couldn't even muster a shrug. Still, once it finally released, I had to play it. I went in with absolutely zero hype and excitement. And what can I say, with my expectations so far down below the floor boards, I thought it was surprisingly good. Definitely better than FFXIII, but man that's a low bar.

You wanna talk a SERIOUS piece of shit FF that I regret spending a single hour on, that'd be FFXVI.

Games are more than sum of their parts. Sometimes there is hard to describe ambience/vibe/feeling. But in these 2 cases, I believe the gameplay is good (better in forspoken) and some aspects are objectively amazing like graphics, music, characters, etc. Story could've been told better in 15 but it's fine

Don't know about books or movie (I only played the game, royal edition).
But he clearly goes from a stupid boy to a responsible king. Too late but that's the lesson.
And of course the love story. The ending ties it all together. I understand it's hard to get invested because you never interact with Luna but maybe my imagination helped. I have a wife, I can imagine the feelings.
This is the meaning I got from THE GAME and that's fine by me.
I will replay it one day and watch the movie. maybe I will get more out of it.

The battle system is terrible. And large chunks of the story are missing or gets glossed over in conversation. So many things happen off camera. Also the time jump was just dumb. There are multiple aspects to a game. In no world, the game is terrible. It might be a 7-8... but in no world terrible. Terrible is like 1-3.

I "get" the impulse to write something when a game you really didn't like or were disappointed by comes up, for me that's FF9 which *I SWEAR* I've played through 3 and a bit times in a fruitless attempt to find the thing that seems to resonate with people... In that case I had to put it down to not being big into the NES/SNES era titles and a general low tolerance for "Hi-de-Ho" style juvenile high fantasy.

The difference is I'd never try and do more than state my opinion, I'm certainly not going to denigrate people who like a thing I don't

I agree that the book is the stuff from the cancelled DLC. I'm saying that ending via those cancelled DLC (and the extra ending in Episode Ignis) are a retcon to respond to some people not liking the end of the game. I'm not seeing anything in either of those articles that contradicts that. Do you have a specific sentence?

I'll try looking for an interview I vaguely remember about that, but it'll take time since it was almost 10 years ago.

I love this game. Yes it's a mess but it has so many quality aspects to it that even modern AAA titles miss. The game does actually give you ways to play it like a JRPG too if you want to and the game has a full cast of playable characters with unique gameplay. It has also a way underrated optional content offering that kept me playing for many hours.

I don't like though how some added Episodes give the story a fanfic vibe. I think the original ending is great and has stuck with me for some time.

Guess that's what happens when you're screwing around by driving around and hanging out with your bros, collecting frogs, etc., like nothing else matters.

All in all it's such a weird game. The world design looks beautiful, but it just feels so empty. Combat is okay, but looks like a step back from Nomura build and doesn't help enemies scale with your level. The food system seemed like a lot of work went into making just making it look pretty, but is mostly useless. Then you have stuff like stealth which sucked, removing the cool "teleport" anywhere aspect, stopping mod support even though it seemed far along, etc.

Such a huge disappointment.

But FFXV does still do that. It's supposed to be an insular story only involving Noctis and his friends, but then the game backtracks on that premise to show us cutscenes from other characters across the world.

They showed scenes from the movie when their city was destroyed, but Noctis wasn't there when it happened, so why show those scenes? Why do we see Luna receiving the letters from Noctis? He wasn't there either.

It's like anything else with FFXV, they kept changing what they wanted to do with it.

I was surprised new FF players loved the game, so I tried putting my bias aside. Then again, I get that vs people liking XIII, what the hell (but the music in that is also damn good).

Undeniably, the way it's put together is a crap, but to me there is much already there that could be further tweaked to make it a superior, complete game. Ardyn's story was excellent. It sold and performed well enough so I wish they would make this project to give to a new team to work on a remaster. Implement the DLC properly, implement the other story beats properly, fix Chapter 13, enhance the growth mechanics, weapons and magic, and add more stuff to do in the world, like dirt bikes for the lads, better quests, etc. I'm all for it. And stick to no girls, cause bros is a nice angle.
