There aren't a lot of combos though. You can't string things together at all. You can't launch and air combo and you can't use your pistol in fighting too (except after a red glow parry).
You're supposed to use Burst or Beta skills which are completely canned. And there are a few variations of regular sword combos that don't differ much and don't give an advantage against certain enemy types. They barely do damage, and they are unsafe. Because you need to build meter and use those B/B skills instead. Parry doesn't flow well with combat either because it stalls you, and you need to rely and blue and red glows during fights. The enemies dictate the fights.
Its eye candy yes, but if you're looking for more depth, or fast and efficient ways to deal with mobs then this game doesn't deliver. There is likely a reason it doesn't even have a combo count to begin with. I can understand why someone who is into DMC and NG doesn't like this combat system. I don't like it either. Or rather, I was glad it was over. I dreaded those later boss fights that didn't end. Despite liking the atmosphere, music, graphical style etc.
