Stellaris - Paradox Dev Studios new sci-fi grand strategy game

The Protoss

I'm up in the air on which one to choose.

Hive mind is a government type unlocked in mid game that will fit perfectly for them, although I'm not sure we know what its effects are.

I am also really curious to see where they go after release. I'm hoping it does well so it's more like CK2/EU4 and not Sengoku or whatever, in terms of post-release support.

goty

It seems they are leaving it uncharacteristically late to let the you tubers get proper time in with this one. Is anybody else starting to worry that it might not be quite ready for prime time?

Probably just being paranoid.

I think they learned their lesson with HOE IV.

Sengoku was more a beta for CK2 than anything else. Stellaris is one of their big projects. They will definitely give it post-release support.

Not really. They've mentioned wanting to be more careful releasing stuff this time around considering how revealing stuff too early has backfired on them in the past. This seems like a part of that new strategy.

Kinda makes sense too considering how people react to this kinda stuff.
Every tuesday threads pop up on their forum with people bitching about bugs seen during the livestream even though they literally start every stream telling people that they're showing of hot code.

Yeah, you're probably right. Soon as I get paid, I think I might have to grab me one of those hot pre-orders!

It's been a really long time since I've been this excited about a upcoming video game.

I love the little backstories you get at the start of a new game. I wonder how much variation they've put in there.

Every update looking more awesome. Why did I start to visit this thread... Two more weeks of waiting. Good thing that Stellaris will keep me busy until HOI IV, so I don't go crazy waiting that last month for that one also.

I have often thought that the post-game auto-generated narrative histories EUIV makes, describing your realm's history, could, with serious work, be a wonderful treat for the player. You know your story, but here it is, written down for you.

As I've gotten older I don't have much free time so I rarely play games any more yet I can't wait for this. I watch the Blorg stream every week and I've never watched any let's play type of thing before.

Speaking of the Blorg stream, is there only one more left? They are back next week but then they said the following Thursday was a holiday in Sweden so we'll probably not get ot he end of that game.

wait, I can Zerg Rush the universe? or have to fight a Zerg invasion? if so, fucking sold

There are some "end game crisis" that can happen during the latter stages of the game. I've avoided finding out too much about these but I think one is about a race coming from outside the galaxy to invade everything. You can also have a massive AI uprising trying to destroy all organics I think.

They'll be streaming after May 9th.

Same here. Most of my time last years went into EU IV, but got a bit tired of it in the end. Stellaris will probably be the game to get me back playing in the evenings.

You can make a zerg hivemind midgame apparently. And sentient ships are apparently a thing. And the species traits can work as such to make a very quickly growing millitaristic race that wants a hivemind. So, more or less.

There's also that endgame disaster.

I spent a few hours last night playing EU4 along ith a tutorial video... And I think I'm over the hump. The video plays as Castille and goes on until they take Grenada, so have to try take Aragon myself now.

But anyway, I should be able to get into Stellaris now which I'm quite excited about because this game looks magnificent.

Stellaris Dev Diary #31 - Modding (Scripting Anomalies)
Hello, earthlings. My name might be unfamiliar to some dev diary readers; I’ve been working on Stellaris for some time now and am in charge of scripting/content design duties for Stellaris while the eminent Goosecreature is away rearing his brood. This week’s dev diary is the first in a two-part series on modding, which you will read, enjoy, and be enlightened by. We’re here to get our hands dirty, so don’t expect any pretty screenshots! Only functional screenshots.
Next week, art director Aerie will explain how to get your own art into the game.

I meant classic in terms of Paradox games (EU IV).

Ah, fair enough. My only other experience with Paradox grand strategy games is one attempted play-through in EU3, and my attempt at empire building crashed and burned from incompetent governance long before I could engage in any large-scale warfare. Incidentally this is one of the reasons I'm so interested in Stellaris, the symmetric single-planet start makes it seem like the perfect introduction to Paradox's particular style of game design. Hopefully after a while with Stellaris I can give EU another go and make slightly less of an idiot of myself.

New interview with Game Director Henrik Fähraeus: http://www.gamezone.com/originals/i...e-on-4x-space-exploration-game-stellaris-jzyn

Inspiration for Stellaris:
A: What, if any, games were used as inspiration for Stellaris?

H: Hm.. There were so many. Personally I’ve played almost every 4X game developed, so that makes up quite a few games. Let’s put it like this: Master of Orion 1 and 2 of course, important inspirations, the Civilization games naturally, a game called Distant Worlds, what more... I wanted the feeling of FTL with some random events, adventure, explorations, and such. And an old personal favorite, Star Control 2, a fantastic game. Those were my biggest inspiration.

Fixed starts:
A: Will there be some sort of static mode so you won’t have to get a new experience every time so players can learn a certain tactic or play a certain way?

H: We will support so called “pre-scripted” galaxies for when people makes total conversion mods like the Star Wars galaxy or whatever. That will be possible to make. It’s also possible that we ourselves will release such scenarios if it turns out to be something the players wants.

Console version:
A: Will Stellaris come to consoles sometime in the future?

H: I’m not going to say “no,” it’s one of those things that depends on how the game is received and such.

A: Are these types of games considered “too complex” for consoles? There aren’t too many 4X games on them.

H: No. I see that as an opportunity to. I would like to announce it to consoles, but we have no plans for it, but it is not impossible at all. There is a chance

Console version:

You can gauge the "mainstream-ness" of an outlet by how soon they ask the "consoles?!?!" question in an interview about a PC exclusive strategy title.

With IGN it's usually question 2 or three, this one made it almost all the way to the end.

Glad to see Star Control 2 as one of his source of inspirations. So many interesting (and also very funny) alien races and deep lore to explore. If I didn't love SC2 as much as I did, I probably wouldn't be half as interested in Stellaris.

I have never given the necessary time to learn a paradox game. I enjoy a lot of strategy games (battlefleet gothic, homeworld, CIV,etc.) Is this game easier to learn?

It's supposed to be. And well, it probably is, because you don't start in a complicated political construct of hundreds of relevant parties on different levels, but grow with it.

I haven't watched streams or any marketing for this game. Does the UI have tooltips so i don't feel lost on what stuff does?
Last year i barely got a good strategy game, this year we got XCOM2, battlefleet gothic and now stellaris and total warhamer. This year is nuts on good strategy games.

It could work on consoles. I have a very usable Crusader Kings 2 config for my Steam Controller, obviously the console controllers aren't as flexible but they should be able to approximate something like it.

It's a Paradox game, half of the game is played through tooltips.

Tooltips are par of the course, you also get an tutorial advisor and an ingame-browser leading directly to the wiki.

I actually think that Stellaris might be doable on a ds4 (even without the touchpad)/360 controller.

Unlike other PDX titles, it doesn't seem to need as much precise mouse control, for example making sure that your army doesn't go through that forest/rebel scum/strait.

In general, it feels like Stellaris has little less "moving" parts than other PDX. If any of their grand strategy games could come to consoles, it would be this.

What's that? Someone mentioned Star Control 2!?

Greetings and salutations!

Star Control 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. In fact, I played The Ur-Quan Masters on the weekly Volition stream months ago. I knew I wasn't crazy for thinking it had to be at least somewhat inspirational for this game.

It would be cool to get controller support, if only so I can stream it to my Nvidia shield without using Pinnacle to map the controls haphazardly.

OT is coming along great. I'm working with mcz117chief to make a worthy OT for this awesome game

Here's a tiny preview

Nice! So much hype for this. Probably will pre-order even though I'd prefer not to do that in general, but the hype is too real!!

Are we gonna have a "Blorg reference" in the title ;)

That race designer is already forcing me to make tough decisions. I know I'm going to have a race of scientist space foxes on my first run, but I'm flipflopping on specifics.

That seems a little harsh for a race that has the xenophile trait. I would have thought that perhaps they would have been perhaps a little more considerate and accepting of other belief systems.
