From Cartoon Network Games and developed by Grumpyface Studios, "Attack the Light" is the first Steven Universe game to feature an original story by Rebecca Sugar and the Steven Universe show team. Featuring touch controls designed specifically for mobile devices, players will explore, solve puzzles, and engage in an innovative turn-based battle system that takes inspiration from beloved classics like Mario RPG and Paper Mario.

After accidentally releasing a powerful light-based foe that had been sealed inside of a magical prism, Steven must venture forth and recapture the seven escaped beings who are causing havoc in five unique worlds. He's not alone, though: accompanying the enthusiastic tyke are the Crystal Gems; Garnet, Amethyst and Pear, Steven's partners/mentors/surrogate family whose battle abilities far exceed any human's.

Garnet is the team's powerhouse, dealing monster damage with her One-Two Punch attack and shattering enemy defenses with Shield Breaker. Focus on increasing her attack and defense so that she can pound enemy mobs to dust!

Amethyst is all about crowd control, and can deal damage to multiple opponents at once with her Whip It Good and Cat O' Nine Tails skills. She's got the lowest amount of HP of the Gems though, so polish up on your action commands if you don't want her to crumble like a poorly-made burrito!

Pearl's specialty is 1-on-1 combat. Her Spear Dance attack costs a mere 1 Star Point to activate, making it ideal for finishing off weakened foes, and she can stop enemies from attacking with her Holo-Pearl doppelganger. Invest in her luck to turn her into a crit machine, dicing through foes as gracefully as a 4-leafed clover blowing in the breeze.

I've heard great things, but I don't have any gaming budget available this month (yes, not even $3).

It's supposed to be heavily inspired by Paper Mario/Mario RPG so that immediately raises my interest.

Ive been playing this and enjoying it a lot. Near the end of world 3 with worlds 1 and 2 100%d.

If anyone is wondering, the game is very focused on the battles themselves (which are great and play like a Mario RPG), the parts where you're moving around the map are super simplified and the game is broken up into levels. Theres times where Steven has to answer a question and depending on your choice a Gem will receive an exp/health boost (generally the more cautious answer will give Pearl the boost etc).

A pretty streamlined experience (naturally) compared to the Mario RPGs.
It's a good idea overall...

Too bad the show hasn't revealed the Garnet + Pearl fusion, or I'm sure they would have made the fusion system in game let you combine any two (or all three) to replace those members of your party for maybe a few turns.

Yeah its pretty decent for a Mobile game Im not one for Mobile games as I can't stand a majority of them but Attack The Light is a nice throwback to the Paper Mario style of combat.

Did that show ever get good? I only watched the first couple of episodes and never really got into it.

Duuuude. Keep watching. I thought it was a pretty cute show in the begenning, but then it literally turns into Dragon Ball Z. That's all I'm gonna say. Watch it.

I love the show, so I'll have to give this a go when it comes out.

It's already out.

Also, the Amazon version isn't Kindle only, you can get it for normal Android devices too. Which is a good idea if you're sitting on (about $15 worth of) Amazon Coins like I am.

God-tier actually. When you take the best writer from Adventure Time (Rebecca Sugar, she handled all of the shows songs and all of the Simon and Marcy episodes) and give her her own show... Yeah, there was no doubt the series was going to get great fast.

Just a note as well: There are no microtransactions. It's $3 up front for the full game.

Gonna have to totally check this show out now. Really enjoying this game so far. Thanks for the thread, OP!

I bought it last night, and from what I've played it's pretty solid. It's not something I can play for hours on end, but it's nice to pick up and beat a level when I'm bored.

I just started watching the show last week and I caught up two days ago. When I heard a video game was coming out, I was really excited. I guess this was the perfect time to get into the series.

Bought! Going to play it tomorrow. I love the show, so why not, and for just 3.39 Euros :P

I'm into the third area and having a great time. Combat is interesting and fun, and the ways they've streamlined the movement for mobile are actually really smart. Lots of nice little touches sprinkled through the experience to add variety, like simple puzzles and conversation choices.

For a couple of bucks you can't go wrong.

As others have said, the combat is streamlined with just enough complexity to be challenging. Nothing hard, but you can get killed if you don't pay attention. By the later levels, I had pearl doing massive damage crits for a single point. It was satisfying knowing that you could really build towards a strategy. The real heavy hitter is Amethyst though, her basic whip attack later on can wipe a whole encounter in one hit if you stack damage on her. One disappointing part was that there doesn't seem to be a way to draw agro. I build Garnet as a tank, but the enemies seemed to avoid her and target Amethyst or Pearl much more frequently.

If your a fan of other Recent Cartoon Network Shows but want something with alittle more Character Depth/Development then you can't go wrong with Steven Universe. Its defiantly rough at the start and takes a few episodes but once its there its really good.

Yes, watch it. :D It slowly builds up and the latest episodes though, shit gets real. Gets pretty mature on the last few episodes, which surprised me because I just started watching it again.

It gets amazing. Its easily my favorite cartoon show on television right now. It starts off rough the first 15 or so episodes, Steven is annoying and its a little too goofy, but after Mirror Gem (ep 25) and Ocean gem (ep 26) it starts to turn into something special. Theres so many great character moments in the second half of the season like The Test, On the Run, and Roses Scabbard. I'd argue they rival some live action dramas. Steven matures as well. Also as another poster said by the season finale it literally turns into dragon ball z.

I've been playing this a lot lol, I just unlocked the last world. The game is a ton of fun, charming, streamlined, and actually pretty damn challenging. The Harmony mechanic and dialogue choices are perfectly fitting for the kind of show Steven Universe is, and work well within the game. It really is like a Paper Mario/Mario RPG on your smartphone, and the experience can be as long or as bite-sized as you want it to be. Definitely worth the $3.

And yes, the show is amazing. It's a bit of a "slow burn" from the start, but when it gets hot less than halfway through S1 it is HOT.

holy crap my title suggestion modification made it.

i guess that means i have to pony up and by the App now. i'm not usually one for paid apps on the phone. i hope ya'll are enjoying it.

How are people building their characters? I did Defense/Harmony on Garnet, Attack/Luck on Pearl, and Attack/Harmony on Amethyst. Worked out really well. I want to try Attack/Luck Garnet on a future playthrough though.

Do you have to be a fan of the show to enjoy the game? It's not every day that you see an OT for a mobile game, so I guess the game is pretty good

Not really, I'd say. The dialogue mechanic does take a lot from the show, and you'll probably need to read the item descriptions more often than if you associate them with where they're taken from, but the battles themselves should still be fun, and even if you don't know the characters, their sprites and animations are quite charming in the context of the game.

ALL LUCK ALL DAY

Except when you can't, in which case attack. But I gave priority to getting all moves and their improvements.

Also use Steven's abilities a lot so he gets experience faster.
At least until you get the bubble shield ability and the upgrade that lowers the cost to 1. It's really useful since it nulls damage from an attack and blocks status inflicting moves or the damage from a status effect one time. If you fail a block against an damaging attack that also inflicts status it might still inflict the status though, and they disappear if you're not attacked for a few turns.

Also, I think I've 100%'d it already and I enjoyed it. It's murder on my battery though.

How does buying the game on amazon work? Does it send you a code?
I want to buy it for a friend who cant justify buying it right now and that seems like the easiest way, but idk if its going to be tied to just my account or not.

It ties it to your Amazon account, and you install it using the Amazon app store. I have no idea if there's a way to gift something, I've never tried.

i like paper mario, i like mario rpg.

don't really watch tv though, so don't know anything about this show.

worth dropping $3?

This is the first of our games to get a GAF OT! Feelin' pretty special (Thanks, ScraftyDevil!)

Thanks everyone for all the kind words on Attack the Light! We've really been blown away by the reception around the internet. (I actually just discovered Tumblr for the first time thanks to this game's release... the show sure has a ginormous following there, and luckily for us the Tumblr community is loving the hell out of the game!!)

Anyway, as great as all the love is, if GAF has any critiques on the game I'm always eager to hear it. We're always wanting to make our games better!

I'd aso be happy to answer any questions if you guys have 'em. Enjoy!

Edit: Here's the trailer, btw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIAj-eTNWaU

Garnet's my Attack/Luck heavy hitting armor breaker wearing
the Iron Boots Badge (can't be knocked out of battle) and Lucky Badge (ups Luck by 50%).
Just like in Garnet's Universe, Steven's encouragement is enough to keep her up and at it. ;P

Amethyst is balanced wearing
the Recharge Badge (+5 harmony every turn) and Star Block Badge (blocking has a chance of giving an extra Star Point).
These two badges are excellent for her to keep doing crowd control.

Pearl has Attack/Defense, wearing
Immunity Badge (30% chance of resisting negative effects) and Super Harmony Badge (small chance each turn to restore full harmony).
She's great for finishing enemies off with any extra SP I have left
and for burning them with her fireball.

I saw a commercial for this today and thought wow that looks surprisingly decent. Glad to hear it's a lot of fun, I'll have to pick it up.

With a bigger budget and a digital release, this could really be something.

Especially since there's a ton of video game friendly concepts in the show.

Oh! You guys made Castle Doombad! No wonder this is so good!

Hey, you should come by the IOS thread. No doubt the regulars there would be interested in this

It was my pleasure. Would you guys ever consider making a sequel if asked? I think that a second game set after the events of the S1 finale would have the potential to even better than this one, and considering how spectacular Attack the Light is that's saying something.

I'll get this soon, looks really cool.

But Cartoon Network should really persuade making Golf Quest a reality. Man, that game looked like everything I always dreamed of. I wish I could live in Steven's world just to play it :lol

quick edit: I really like how it uses the "far away LoD" art style from the series, where characters have a very simple look to them. One of my favorite things about the show's art.

I'd like to note that the Samsung Galaxy SIII update is live on Google Play, literally the only thing keeping me from playing the game. I'm not that far in, but so far I like what I'm seeing. Each Gem has a distinct role to fill for any given situation, but you only have so much Star Points to perform actions per round so you have to play smart and choose your attacks wisely for efficient battling. Or end your turn early to carry unused SP to the next round and really wail on enemies.

I really like the battle theme.

Though sometimes it sounds like it doesn't loop correctly in-game. *shrug* I'll play more tomorrow.

Thanks for making the OT!
I'm still in World 1 but I'm enjoying it.

One question regarding countering: I don't have to tap on the Gem thats being attacked, I can ta anywhere and they'll counter?

Yeah you can tap anywhere are anything that's not selecting actions are targets.

Well, I'm starting to feel the effects of neglecting defense, although Steven's support abilities are so good that I haven't actually lost a battle yet.

Can someone explain to me why one of the crystal gems is a little fat boy instead of a girl like the rest

Aw, thanks! It's always awesome seeing Doombad fans :)

Subscribed to that thread! Will definitely stop by

All depends on what CN and the show team want to do, but we'd love to! I'd definitely be interested in hearing what kind of things people want in a sequel

He's half human/gem. The Gems are actually sentient rocks that can project bodies. So while they may look like women they're actually rocks. Thats why when they die in the game, all thats left is their gemstone. You should check out the show, its great.

I plan to get this when I get paid. Would love to see an expanded version of this on XBLA or PSN.

Hope it does well, the show deserves it.
