You're actually in the same boat as mine, Onion is my least favorite character of the cast. I actually like Lars, and Renaldo would be my second least favorite but I think he's alright. He has some funny moments and scenes. I don't hate Onion, and there's some amusing scenes with him, but I like him more when he only appears briefly for sight gags than in episodes where he's a bigger focus and gets more screentime.

But I do think this episode has a curveball coming.

onion is okay in small bit parts, but i really dislike full episodes about him. the only decent one was involving amy and his mom, as that had more amy backstory.

at least onion is tolerable unlike lemengrab or whatever the heck his name is on adventure time. His character and episodes are just pure garbage and I would likely get a lot more enjoyment out of rick and morty if it wasn't his VA doing those voices as well as his voice is super annoying (and I know lemon is supposed to be annoying and thus he does a great job for that, but still isn't something I want to listen to)

Roland is much better in Rick and Morty since he isn't shouting all the time like Lemongrab but yeah I get why people despise the character.

I find the idea that Greg might be 'too old' for her, yet somehow Pearl isn't, hilarious.

Pearl can look like whatever she wants. Her default form looks like a young adult as far as for Dewey to think she's Steven's older sister.

Greg cannot look as anything other than an old guy unless he uses some of his fortune for plastic surgery.

there's also the issue that gems don't age physically...or mentally

Rose made a huge issue of this, how people changed through life and grew, but gems appeared already formed

Onion Gang was the least fun I've ever had watching SU. Even the episodes that I see a lot hate for online I was able to find some kind of entertainment in... for me, Onion Gang was an awkward 11 minute affair that felt significantly longer. I'm definitely not going to be revisiting this one.

Onion Gang:

I have never seen an episode of any show that was full of so much nothing. It is probably packed with hidden secrets and foreshadowing, but good luck finding them through the nap you'll be having as this meticulously crafted Our Gang knockoff sends you straight to slumberland.

lately SU's quality from episode to episode have been swinging between really good and really bad

Well, I'd say it's mostly the episodes focused on the beach city residents. Compared to the gem focused episodes, these cover really conventional ideas and resolve them in mundane ways. And really, this show is all about the gems. I'm sure the human characters have fans, but Steven Universe didn't blow up until they started exploring the gem related elements. At this point, the Beach City almost feels like its there just because Steven needs a childhood home.

Don't see how that was bad but ok I guess.

I thought it was cute and made me like Onion a bit more and
gives some understanding to his relationship with Steven, as well as showing how Steven feels. He really DOESN'T have many friends his age.
That's good enough for me.

Hmmm...judging by the responses I guess this will be another bore from an onion episode.
I don't know what I expected.

Welp, guess I'll get this episode over with.

I'm really sad to be hearing that my expectations for this episode seem to be in line with what we got :(

why oh why did we get an onion episode to end the year on :/

Guys, think about all of the shit Steven's been through during this event. Would you really rather
it not be an episode where Steven gets some more mild closure to bookend Summer of Steven and let things go out on a more muted note
than
something like Steven working on an apple farm with Alexandrite only for a Homeworld dreadnought to surface near Beach City?

Uuugh, townie filler is starting to become the worst kind of filler; 4 seasons in and we're still getting really mundane human episodes that are played completely straight and go nowhere.
At this point these kinds of episodes are starting to feel like they come from a completely different show.
:/

I'm trying to figure out if there's going to be a new credits theme, or if there's going to be a brand new song that will be gradually revealed, a la 'Love Like You'.

I try and hope that these "townie" episode are necessary to make viewers care when Beach City is in grave danger in a future story arc. It was effective in The Return, but the episodes before that didn't have so many lingering plot threads hanging over them like we do now.

There's good "townie" episodes (Restaurant Wars) and there's pretty bad/uninteresting ones (Future Boy Zoltron). I guess that the Crewniverse likes branching out and doing non-Gem focused stories. But meanwhile, I'm sitting over here like Milhouse, pounding my fist and asking when they're gonna get to the fireworks factory.

At least Onion Gang was better than Future Boy Zoltron.

Hopefully the calm before the storm is over. If Gem Harvest isn't a troll title, it should definitely be interesting...if it even airs in 2016.

Eh, Last One Out of Beach City makes up for every other bad episode they've had.

And you're absolutely right. After the pretty funny Kindergarten Kid and Know Your Fusion, this season switched between meh episodes (Future Boy Zoltron, Buddy's Book) to utterly incredible and amazing episodes (Last One Out of Beach City, Mindful Education). At this rate, Gem Harvest should be mind-blowing.

Didn't expect everyone to hate it. I though it was pretty funny. Maybe I'm the odd one out in that I like seeing some of the townsfolk expanded upon.

I didn't hate it. I thought it was kinda cute.

But I also think that whatever it needed to say, it could've done in a thousand better ways. Specially because the characters looked interesting.

People keep saying that Soup looks like Frisk. Incidentally, Undertale was first released today last year.

I like that the show finally introduced us to Suitcase Sam kinda, only to use him as the subject of a prank.

I think this one was alright. It was kinda funny, I liked the way the kids were designed. But I feel that Steven's voice can be aggravating if he just talks non-stop.

I have to agree, however -- I'm in the camp that thinks the townie episodes need a real kick in the rear. Something needs to change, they feel so removed from everything else. The character development is also really mundane. The episodes themselves tend to be really boring.

But I thought this one was ok. Definitely not as bad as Rising Tides, the recent Pizza episodes, the Kevin racing episode, and anything Ronaldo. Onion is more charming than those other human characters.

Townie episodes really need some of that gem magic, whether it involve at least one gem, or something like when Steven possessed Lars.

If it's time for a hiatus I guess that episode was better than ending on a cliff hanger, but not by much. I wasn't expecting anything and was still disappointed.

Hahaha
That Simpsons clip is pretty on point when it comes to sitting through a cluster (no pun intended) of townie filler
*pounds fist to ground*
"When are they gonna get back to Centipeetle and Jasper!?"
"When are they gonna get back to Bismuth!?"
"When are they gonna get to Pearl's backstory!?"
"When are they gonna get to White Diamond!?" *cries*

But yeah we're basically on the same page.
