"STOCK UP!" - Limit of THREE

So I just went down to Duane Reade and they had Lipton Ice Tea on sale, two for a dollar.

Now, the sign next to the cases of tea read, "SALE, 2 for $1, STOCK UP!"

As I got two cases full, and extra in a basket, that left me with a total of fourty of them. The manager walked by, and said the limit was three. ... that made no sense, and I went with all fourty to check out. The cashier looked at them, and had a very strained look on her face.

At checkout, I noticed the total was wrong. It only discounted 24 of them... not 3... and not 40. Then the cashier had to call over the manager, who said several times, "I told you, but you do not listen."

The line at this point had grown to about five people, with only one cashier. I had to get the cashier to void sixteen of them, and in the process, with the manager saying I was wrong the whole time, I started to cause a bit of a commotion, asking those in line, "Do you consider three stocking up?"

I left the store with 24 of them for $12, and I'll probably be back later tonight to claim another 24 of them.

FLAWLESS VICTOLY!
I guess it depends on what you consider a "stock". But situations like these are why everything in the fucking world has to be spelled out to the nth degree.

Stock up implies to acquire large quantities. Pick a few up would be applicable.

I just can't believe the limit was three on a product marked two for $1. Shouldn't they be sold in oh I don't know multiples of two?

I see two clear faults here:

1.) I wouldn't consider three "stocking up", but

2.) the manager did warn you, goodcow.

Hopefully this taught the grocer a valuable lesson in semantics, and you a valuable lesson in listening to grocery store managers.

Goodcow, whenever I see your handle, I immediately think of every motherfucker bitching with the cashier about some buy five, get one free deal for 20 minutes right in front of me. I like your progressive ways of thinking, but I hate your consumer habits.

Goodcow, you are amazing, I love reading your tales of shopping woes. Don't listen to the haters, keep on fighting the good fight! :lol

needs to show more effort.
often when you see a deal like, 3 for $5 it will say limit 1. That doesn't mean you can only buy 1 of whatever it is, it means you can do the '3 for $5' once. Thus, limit 3 prolly meant the amount you could get was 6 for $3

As for stocking up... that depends. Its prolly pushing it for iced tea since thats just a one time use beverage but the term of stockign up is sorta a relational thing between how many people are buying to how many they would buy if there wasn't a deal. Like... if you buy somethign once a month, and then this stime you buy 6, that would indeed be stocking up.

However, if it didn't say limit 3 in writing at the stand that had the deal, I would have done the same as you ^_^

Why the hell would the manager not want sales? Who the fuck cares how many he bought.

Because that store just lost a number of customers, who in addition to purchasing the tea would've likely purchased other things while they were at it. Now, they'll go across the street to Rite Aid instead.

Well, they've moved the large stack of cases of tea which was located near the cash registers to whereabouts unknown.

Discount still works though. I should just take them, one by one from the fridge in the back, and charge them for 50 cents each to make VISA happy.

The manager can say any old made up shit to stop you buying. But unless its written down somewhere visible, he can fuck off.

Every store can refuse service to anyone and tell them to go fuck off without buying a single thing.

Sales aren't about sales. Sales are marketing promotions designed to enhance add-on sales of higher margin goods. This could be direct or indirect. Drawing people into the grocery section to pick up cheap tea, and then having them buy bags of potato chips or something. This could also be by adding the mental note that "this store has good deals" and thus subconsciously enticing a customer to return in the future. Sales are not for a few cheapskates to come in and buy up all the sale product. (Exception being clearance sales, which are a tiny subset not relevant here).

To connect this to video games...

The same logic applies to console systems. There's no profit on an XBox or PS2s. Game Stores stock them so people come in and buy video games with the system, or subconsciously return in the future because that's where they bought their system (salmon returning to spawn, etc). I've seen people get all up and stupid for not being able to buy a stack of XBoxes (to mod and resell, to take to third world countries, to sell on ebay during shortages, etc) and geting all bent out of shape. I've also seen people get mad that they don't get a discount on a game despite them dropping a couple hundred dollars on a system. The only reason the game store is selling the system is to get the profit off the game.

Retail sales ARE NOT just about raw dollars taken at the cash register.
