Stop me from hurting myself! (launch hype)

Please give me as many reasons as you can so that I don't go down to Wal-Mart right now and pick up a 360. I don't know how many they have left, but there weren't that many people there, either. I went with my roommate just to pick up some stuff (it is a 24-hour store) for the apartment, and it just hit me all of a sudden. I mean, I don't really want a 360 *that* bad, but I'm eager to jump into the next generation, even if it the X360 isn't that much of a leap. Launch hype scrambles my brain and I know a few people that have gone out to get theirs, they've been talking about it all day. Then, just seeing customers walk out of Wal-Mart with their shiny, new consoles in hand: it took all the willpower I had to keep myself from spending money I don't have.

I suppose my biggest concern is that if I end up wanting one for an Xmas present or something, I won't be able to get one unless I get it now.

Damn you, hypemasters, DAMMMMMNNN YYOOOOOOUUUU!!!!

Hype was very close to getting me too, but I resisted. I keep reciting the mantra I had for every system launch I've ever been apart of, in which I came home, had a 48 hour buzz, and a 3 month crash wherein I realized the system sucks and it's gonna take a year for it not to.

Launch list sucks, lack of HDTV and none of my Xbox games will work on it were good enough reasons for me.

Breathe.

Relax.

I'm pretty sure nobody is going to mock you for not getting one on launch day. And if your buddies all have them, then you're not going to get shut out of next gen entirely, right?

The hype was getting to me too, but then I checked my bank account.

seriously, for 400 clams, it isn't worth it, nothing very new or outstanding unless you just have to play Kameo or PDZ for some godforsaken reason.

Yeah, it's true. I know. I kept telling myself "I have plenty of games to play, I have plenty of games to play, I have plenty of games to play!" The consumer whore of me wants, nay, NEEDS new hardware on launch day. The little bugger is hard to suppress. I'm also at a crossroads in a different sense, though. Like I said, if I waited til Xmas, it likely won't be available. If I got it now, though, I'm honestly not sure if I'd want it as an early Xmas gift (the only way I could possibly afford it).

Well, they aren't buddies so much as acquaintances. You know, the people you see at work or school, but never actually hang out with?

NOOOOOOO, THEY'RE GONNA LAUGH AT YOU!

Doesn't sound like you're truly interested in the system (yet). I think a good wanking and then perhaps crying yourself to sleep will do the trick.

But if I were you, I'd get in line.

When the price-drop hits along with Ninja Gaiden 360 or whatever the system-selling killer app is, you'll thank yourself for not letting that bug bite you in the ass.

see rather then succumbing to hype tonight, I thought it through on wether I could afford this thing or not about a month ago. Basically I can't afford it without using the visa and I've enough games to play for awhile anyway. Plus I still want an HDTV to play the thing on, it seems almost pointless to deny myself 50% of the visual quality by playing it through my regular tv(which plays current gen stuff just fine)

NEVER buy stuff on impulse you will always regret it.

To be honest, I'm baffled at the amount of people getting it so fast, especially considering how jaded some of you guys are.
I'm just not excited by any of the launch titles. none of them makes me even think about getting the system. 90% of them are just ports and sequels with shinier graphics, and even the original ones aren't exactly getting groundbreaking reviews (to say the least)

Might as well spend the money on some of the awesome games the PS2 had been getting lately.

Im not really excited about any of the launch games but I want one just to finally put my HDTV to good use on days other than sunday.

Tell me about it. You and me got a similar bug. At 2pm I was seriously so close from going into my fucking savings just to get one. For a console. That's the type of consumer whore I am. Eventually I realized that I'm gonna have to fix my car soon, and go to E3, and I still have all these games for current gen systems. I just had to sit back and play some DQ8 to get my mind off of it.

This all sounds amazingly geeky, and it is. But this launch shit just gets me everytime, can't help it.

So I gotta ask the question: What hype? I mean, outside of message board, and the very hard-core XBox fans.

The ads are terrible and non-specific. The mainstream press has been pretty crummy the past few weeks. The launch lineup has been reamed since being announced, and delays like Oblivion had people furious.

It's looking like a solid launch lineup now, and I'm personally sold on the system. BUT.

Has MS really been that successful at turing the MTV/E3/Wall Guy/Retard Pack/AccessoryRapeRape into hype this big? If so, then MS has come a LONG way in their marketing from XBox 1.

Oh, I'm definitely getting a PS3, but that's still a ways off. You can bet your bottom dollar that I'll be camping out for that one! Unless I have a test. No, wait, I'd still do it, I'd just study in line or something.

I'm a consumer whore, like I said, and whether I really want it or not, sometimes it's just hard to resist buying the "newest thing" once it hits the streets. Either way, I do appreciate the support and I think the feeling is waning some now. Maybe I'll go play some DQ VIII to ease my pain.

#1 reason you shouldn't go down to Wal-Mart right now:

They've already sold out.

You live in Gainesville?

Also, yes, I've been eyeing that cheap HDTV on Black Friday which would cost just as much as a 360 with all the fixins anyway. There's no other way I could afford a box like that unless it's really discounted, as it will be at the end of this week. I don't know if it's the best TV out there (well, it certainly isn't...), but it is currently more practical for me than something that costs several thousand dollars.

As always, the hardcore set simply fails to understand the larger picture. There's no perspective in these little corners of the internet, and everything is a cutting blow. Microsoft has managed to market an image around 360, and no amount of bad press could make it go down. The MTV show, as shitty as it was, emphasized just a start to the application of this. Hardcore gamers read the bad press, and they buy the system anyway. Casual gamers won't read most of the bad press, and then they see hardcore gamers buying the system anyway and ask for it for Christmas.

I think Microsoft hit the right notes, especially in the US, and now we're officially seeing the launch of the first true competitor to the PlayStation throne since Sony entered the market. In the US, at least, it will be extremely close.

Just means you'll miss out on all the post launch day frenzy, XBL sessions and general tradition of being part of console luanch.

opening the box, smelling that sweet factory fragrence of newly born hardware, tinkering with the Xbox sytem, the control pad, checking out minters sound visualisers, playing and experiencing PGR3 and PDZ.

If its available get it, if your lucky enough to find it. Im waiting for my box to ship, so eeven though i will be part of the luanch day crowd, i get to play it on friday :(

its going to be tough trying to wade through the countless X360 threads that involves impressions and hype

If that fails, then maybe you can do what I did and buy a copy of some stupid-expensive game like Valkyrie Profile or Radiant Silvergun that you've always wanted. If you're going to make an expensive consumer-whore impulse purchase, might as well get something you know will satisfy you.

Yeah, I mean, there were a fair number of people camping outside of other stores (Best Buy, Rhino Games - a local joint). It's just that Wal-Mart wasn't doing pre-orders so there was no formal line. There were a few people walking out with 360s, but they weren't coming and going in droves. So, I wouldn't say the hype was a failure, that's for sure.

Anybody that isn't in line already on the east coast is pretty much screwed for even a 10 am open store.

The only cure for hype is to spend a bit of money on games anyway. Instead of buying an xbox 360, splurge and get 2 or 3 (hopefully on sale) current gen games that you've been meaning to pick up. It'll take your mind off the 360 for a while, and after the first hype hits and is done with it's really easy to ignore the fact that you don't have the latest and greatest system.

GAF was hyping the PSP so hard I actually considered spending all that $$$ on one, but I held off and a month later I was like, PSP who? It was easy to get over as soon as the silly launch hype went away.

I expect a press release from Microsoft within 48 hours trumpeting this success :lol

I'm bothered that an american console has a chance at market domination in the US. If Ps3 loses ground in North America, less japanese devs will be willing to bring their games over. I think one of the reasons Xbox was well accepted is because americans are proud to support their american console. It's all patriotism, and it all plays american style games, no japanese games for launch.

Probably the most memorable moment of a console purchase. I relate it to launch because its the only time i unpack consoles for the first time.

If you can read through all 450 posts in the thread about all the lines forming in people's home towns without reaching for your car keys, then I'm sure you'll be able to hold out until whenever. Even though I have one coming via FedEx tomorrow, that thread makes me wanna go stand in line for the hell of it.

WHy the hell wouldn't you get one? I've done nothing but bash the system, but I'm still going to try and pick one up tomorrow for the sole purpose of ebaying it. You're guaranteed to make a profit.

That's exactly why I want to buy X360....God fucking damnit.

There are people who fucking won multiple Xbox360's, by cheating the fucking rigged contest...

And there are people who fucking won TWO xbox 360's by winning one from CANADA contest, and one from US.

GGGGRRRRRrrrrrrrrrr........

And you know what's worse? I DON'T HAVE MONEY, AND ITS BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE A FUCKING JOB.

Assholes.

Sorry, rant of the day. Rant of the motherfucking day.

What is this launch you speak of? I'm sitting at home listening to old episodes of This American Life with my fiance. Best way to keep me from being tempted into buying a 360 when there isn't a game that I'm interested in. Damn you hype!

Go buy one and sell it on Ebay that way you can make money and put that towards getting a 360 when it's worth it. That's what I'm doing, it's also paying for my Guitar Hero. :D

Yeah, seriously. I don't drink soda, either, so I couldn't really participate in the Mountain Dew thing and asking for codes seemed like too much of a hassle.

Another thing stopping me that I still have so many games that I still need to finsih and some more games that i want but have not bought yet. If i buy an Xbox360 I will not have enough money to buy the rest of the games that I still want to buy and I will still have a huge backlog of games.
