4:19am, alarm goes off at 6:50am... been 5-10 minutes late for work pretty much every day for a week now. Shit I hate not being able to go to sleep. :|

Even when the internet is boring and I feel a bit tired I'll turn on the TV to find something to watch for a few minutes and out of nowhere PBS will have some great new show on about the X-Plane competition or the Incas or something and I end up watching for an hour.

I assume most of you on GAF right now are in time zones where it's not insane to be on, but how many insomniacs we have here? Being out of school/work and staying up all night just because don't count, how many of you stay up all night even when you need to get up in the morning?

I stay up all night every day, my sleep schedule is pretty much shot. I sleep at around 8am, wake up around 2pm because I normally go in to work about 3:30-4pm.

Right now I have the PS2 going behind me, while I periodically update the message boards I frequent.

edit: oh, i don't count

Well fuck you then, you're on your own.

I'm up all night because my job hours are from 10 pm to 6 am on weekdays, and 6pm to 6am on weekends, when I work weekends that is. But that's my schedule pretty much all the time, sometimes I'm not even tired on my days off, but I'll fall asleep out of boredom at like 4 in the morning

I don't have insomnia, I just don't care to sleep. Even when I worked at my last job and had to do 8-12+ hour shifts or when I was in school and had to be out the door at 7am, I'd still go to bed around 3-4am and just make up the sleep as I go. Then again, I'm the resident coffee house addict, so I manage. If you want to sleep, even if you can't, your best bet is to lie down and not fiddle around.

If you want to get up on time, set two alarms, one notably earlier than the time you need to get up by, say by 30 minutes, and the other one about 10 minutes prior. When the first goes off, you can snooze or dismiss it, and sneak in some extra nap time, but when the next one goes off, you'll be more alert anyway and more likely to get up. At least, that's what worked for me before I opted to throw in a third alarm just in case.

I'm constantly up late, usually going to sleep between 5 and 6am. I don't think it's insomnia. At least, I'm not trying to go to sleep and failing, I just like the peace & quiet of the early AM.

You know what puts me to sleep? Spaced. It's so warm and comforting!

i've found the following helpful with sleep.

Excercise - When i was working out, i remember having some of the most sleepful nights ever. A vigorous workout with a shower a couple hours before bed is one of the best, and natural feelings in the world. i need to stop using my bench for a clothes rack and get back in shape. :/

Melatonin - i started off taking a capsule half an hour before bed, but found that half a capsule worked just as effectively and much quicker given the fact it didn't have to be digested. After fifteen minutes with an open capsule (about thirty with a closed capsule) i could feel myself falling deeper into my bed.

Work & school - Getting up at 6a and not going to bed until 2a for five or six days a week will make sleeping much easier. Of course it makes it easier to fall asleep while standing up or driving, so it's not without it's cons.

Vodka - Whenever i had way too much caffeine too late, i'd down a couple of shots of vodka, straight from the freezer, put my head on the pillow, and wake up when i needed to if not earlier. Probably not the best sleep aid as i suppose you could develop a dependency on the ease of sleep after drinking.

I work the night shift, so I gets back at 2:30 am. I just usually stay up til about 6 or so doing what I would during the day- music, video games, reading.

i've tried ambien before. it is pretty weird stuff. i'd go for exercise/anything else before i decided to rely on ambien. besides, a physician shouldn't prescribe it unless you're not able to sleep for days at a time or you have another outstanding reason for taking it.

yes, it knocked me the fuck out.

the first time i used it i thought i was an orange or something crazy like that for a half hour and next thing i knew it was 12 hours later.

I used ambien for a while and yeah it does work. A few times I took two pills instead of one and I honestly don't know how the hell I ever made it to my bed. I almost want to get back on it now so I could sleep within 10 minutes instead of 45-60 minutes it usually takes.

With the exception of #2 there, I can vouch for all of those. Aoi Tsuki, as always, knows what he's talking about. I generally hit the gym at 2am every other day anyway and if I weren't in the habit of staying up, I'd be sleeping like a baby. It really does just wipe you clean, especially after a shower.

workouts will definately make sure you have a good sleep. physically knackered equals sleep. feels so good getting to bed as well. damn I've got to start exercising again.

its only 11pm here, but Ill bed soon and sleep. Staying up a bit cause I am now willfully unemployed. woot!

very occasionally when I have trouble sleeping I watch tv in bed, that knocks me out for some reason.

also you could whack off (had to be said and it works)
