Is that an OK thing to do?
I don't think there is anything wrong with helping people less fortunate than yourself. As long as she isn't a drug addict then she will likely put the money to good use.

Is there a way you could help her organize her life so that she would get rid of that large debt? That might be more important.

I'm planning on selling my motorcycle (I barely use it). We could pay a large part of the debt with that money.

In the west there is the stereotype of a long term single woman (spinster) becoming a 'crazy cat lady', but I don't know of any stereotype of what a long term single male is 'meant' to turn into. Is there one?

I can't make threads, so...

I'm a 30 year old guy, married, and my wife is pregnant. We both have a job and earn decent money.

Well, my dad died 10 years ago, and my mother lives alone (she is 55). She has a job, but she earns a lot less money than me. And she has a big debt (my scumbag brother had some gambling debts and my mother helped him... sigh).

So, since a couple of weeks ago, I started giving her around the equivalent of $50 dollars per week, just as something extra. I already talked with my wife, and she is OK with it.

Does anyone of you help your parents with money every week? Is that an OK thing to do?

What are your experiences?

It is a more than OK thing to do. But given your circumstances you need to keep something in mind... Will the money stay with your mom? If your gambling addicted brother finds out about it will he try to get more money from her?

My ex and I have helped my mother in law out with bills usually my ex would just take her shopping for groceries to make sure her mom had food.

Oh and congrats on soon becoming parents. Greatest feeling in the world.

That's a really interesting question. I can't find a definitive answer. Old, drunken slob? Creepy old perv guy? I guess just a general "Potentially dangerous weirdo" would cover it. Not saying it is right or accurate, but I think the best case scenario you can hope for in that situation is that people think you're a widower or divorcee.

Thanks for your reply. I guess it is because how how our societies in the 1800's women were meant to be married/have kids by a certain age, hence the word spinster for which there is no male equivalent, only phrases like 'confirmed bachelor', because there wasn't so much pressure on guys.

I think you are on the right track, something a long the lines of 'creepy old guy' would seem like the most common way of describing a stereotype old single man.

I know it's stupid to even write this but a while ago I woke up after one hour of sleep, completely uneasy and shivering... I tried to shrug it off and sleep but it isn't working so I got up, walked around the flat, drank a bit and calmed down. As long as I sit I feel alright-ish but as soon as I lie down and try to sleep it starts again and the oddest thing is I don't feel particulary bad or ill, I'm just shaking and uneasy o.o

The thing is, it isn't the first time I have something like this, it usually happens at most two times a year but never to the extend I straight out couldn't get back to sleep so I never thought much about it... could it be the temperature? I usually sleep with the heater off even at minus degrees and never had a problem but right now I start to feel "warmer" and better I think as I write this... I'm also a bit hypohondric so please be mindful with your responses! :P If I do manage to sleep I'll probably shake my head at writing this after I wake up but yeah...

Who is the female singer* that does the theme song for Naruto Shippuuden in season 2 (I'm on episode 60 right now)? I'd research it myself but I'm afraid I'll see spoilers if I start googling stuff.

*and is she attributed as part of a band or solo singer?

I'm not into k-pop or anything but I lover her voice and would like to hear more from her.

So, I have this glass of opened napoli sauce in my refrigerator.
It says one should consume it within 4-5 days after opening the lid.
However I opened it like at least 3 weeks ago.
Unopened it's expiry date is 2017.

Is it still safe to eat the sauce? Should be fine with a little cooking?
It's Sunday and I'm getting company later.

Nope, probably not safe. Even with cooking, i think.
If it were 6-7 days, i'd say it is likely OK but any more... nope.

At least, i would not use it.

The OP for season 3 is Blue Bird by Ikimono-gakari (vocalist is Kiyoe Yoshioka)

So this may not be such a stupid question but can anyone explain why RAM prices regularly fluctuate quite wildly? I'm curious because I'm looking to up my PC from the 8gb of 1866mhz to either 16gb of the same speed or faster, but right now prices seem pretty steep compared to when I last bought RAM and I'd liked to know what to look out for that would indicate another price fluctuation.

There was a shortage in materials sometime last year I believe. Also, with DDR4 showing up on the market, I think DDR3 production started winding down. There are probably other factors that the guys in the build a PC thread on gaming side can explain better.

Sort of stupid, I guess. I didn't think this deserved its own thread so here goes: I am up for an phone upgrade and was looking for advice. Is there anything out now I should pick up or is there a phone relatively close to release I should wait for?

Phones are released on a 6 month cycle, some manufacturers stick to the 12 month cycle. In March (start of month at MWCC usually) Sony, HTC, LG, OnePlus and Samsung (own event) will all announce their flagships and mini flagships for the year. Apple and Google (Nexus range), as well as Sony (who might now exit the phone business) also release flagships in Sep/oct time, with Samsung and others releasing phablet flagships then too. Windows with their OEMs (Nokia and HTC) do so in summertime too. Therefore, waiting until March/April (for release) will be optimal.

If you need any advice on the different phones come that time, hop into the Android thread or create a a thread in Off Topic. Plenty of people willing to help. Be wary of biases and people who have not tried the wide range of phones. Going into a store to test it out is best.

Huh, makes a lot of sense actually since my last purchase would have been before the shortage. Thanks for the info!

I appreciate your advice, thank you very much.

Just to add a bit more to this, not only does the introduction of the new models bring a price drop for the older models but for Samsung this will be a bigger year than last. Traditionally each odd number of their S models will only be a minor upgrade over the even numbered model. They're up to the S6 now for this year so it should be more than just an incremental update. The biggest exception to that rule would have been last years S5 which had a much better processor than its predecessor, but this years model should be quite heavily redesigned all around by the sounds of things. Couldn't tell you much about any of the other brands but for Samsung at least their best models come every two years and this year is on the right side of that fence.

If I make Amazon affiliate earnings in one currency, can I use/spend that on a different version of Amazon? (For example, if I get affiliate earnings from Amazon.jp, can I convert the earnings to Euros, UK pounds, or US dollars, etc?)

Sorry, but the actual Amazon pages on this aren't helpful.

I'm at work right now, so I can't test this, but...

I have a Moto G Second Generation. The phone has stereo speakers on the front (see picture). So, if I watch videos, Netflix, etc., in horizontal mode, the left channel will play through the left speaker and the right channel will play through the right speaker (obviously).

But what happens when I held the phone in vertical position?

Does anybody else have problems connecting to Wikipedia and Twitter at the moment? Other websites work fine right now but I'm just not getting in to those two.

Edit: Scratch that. It works now.

Warning: Extreme paranoid question. I seriously feel like I'm going insane with this and sorry if this sounds so completely out there...

Its about cracked screens.

So when I was partway through playing Dangan Ronpa 2 on my Vita in December, I noticed a vertical crack of...I dunno, a little less than an inch tall perhaps. (All cracks that I list look like rainbow colored lines when on bright screens.) Okay, I just recently moved, and while I had it, my 3DS, and iPad with me the entire time its possible that it could've gotten banged up then. A little weird as I had spent countless hours watching YouTube on it the month prior to noticing the crack and after moving that I didn't see the crack, but its possible I could've missed it.

Then a few days later I notice another small vertical crack on the Vita...

Then I noticed a couple huge cracks on my WiiU gamepad. It was in the back of a uhaul, but in the WiiU box and the box was fine plus the analog sticks should've stopped it from cracking. But maybe it was the move.

I then got paranoid as hell and tried to be extra careful but of course that caused me to be clumsier than ever. Keep in mind that since 2010 the only cracks that have ever happened was on my iPad due to my accidentally slinging a headphone on it really hard once while tring to plug them in. So I am really careful with my stuff.

So a couple days later, I tripped over a cord and the WiiU gamepad and WiiU both fell three-ish feet to the ground. I notice a couple more cracks...okay, cracks from the move then some more from my clumsiness, it sucks, but no more should happen right?

Within the next couple days I also, slung both left and right earphones on my iPad screen for the second time. Notice two more cracks. Some really bad luck here, but still all of these cracks across the systems were either my fault, or most likely the moves fault.

But a few days later, I notice a couple more cracks on my Vita screen. Okay this is where shit gets real. There was absolutely no reason for these to be here this time. I start thinkng maybe its the environment somehow. I am now living with my aunt and uncle and no airconditioner in my room for the first time in my life + they will turn the heater on very hot when it gets a little cold so I have a ordinary fan in my room. I start thinking maybe its the heaters fault or maybe the fan blowing on some systems are causing the cracks. So I move my systems away from the fan and heater vent that is closed in my room. (Its a general house vent and its on the ceiling in my room.)

Few days later, I notice a few more cracks on my Vita...then a few days after that, I notice a couple more cracks on the WiiU gamepad. After that it was mostly the Vita, more and more of the vertical cracks and then also alot of little tiny circle-ish cracks appeared on my Vita screen in addition to a few diagonal cracks that don't turn rainbow color when using the Vita. Day by day it seems like I just keep noticing more and more and every few days I might notice another crack on my gamepad or iPad. I then remember one day right as the heater kicked on, I was pretty sure I actually heard my Vita make a cracking noise.

So whats the deal here? I don't know anythng about screens so is it possible that something in the environment, most probable the heater? Or did everything get completely ruined on the move and I just notice new cracks everyday? My Vita screen, its annoying but I can still play on it, but if it keeps getting worse...I mean I can't just afford to replace systems here.

I really just have no clue whats going on and I don't get it at all. With the amount of cracks I now notice on my Vita I have a hard time believing that i didn't notice them all for a couple months and yet keep noticing more ones, but the idea that something other then something hitting the screen causing these cracks sounds insane to me but don't know how screens work so can anyone possibly help me out? O_O

Edit: And no screen protectors on anything. Never needed any but that may change. Don't really want to resort to them tho, since it may mess up the screen further. But if it would help then I would. Dunno how much it would help against natural causes if this is what it is.

Edit2: Starting tonight, putting my Vita and Gamepad into closed off shelves and see if that stops more cracks from happening, atleast for the night. Use my Vita alot so I keep besides me during the day but that might have to change if this progresses.

I open a lot of tabs when im on the web.

Problem is, when I press ctrl + f, the find box only shows in the tab which I open it in. So its very annoying when I want to find the same thing in each tab.

This didnt use to be a problem with firefox.

How do I fix this? is it in the options setting and im going blind? Or will I need to download an add-on?

Sorry for bringing this up again but my systems are really getting damaged here.

So noone knows anything about this? I've tried countless google searches and it seems extreme heat is a thing to break glass but I don't think this heater is that extreme.

After several google searches I can't really find any good answers as to how this is happening weather it really is the heater as I suspect or something else. Noone relly believes me and the heater is staying on during cold days and nights (all the time.) and the lack of results via google makes it seems like I'm the only one this is happening too. I just don't get this at all. :(

Another thing is this house has...I dunno what its called, suction? Basically when anyone opens any door in the house, my door, as well as I assume all other doors get pulled on, like someone is trying to open it. That is another possibility that could perhaps cause the random cracks? My door gets pulled on each time the heater kicks on too. I now know 100% that I don't just keep noticing cracks that were perhaps caused in the move or by an accident. My current systems that I have on me in the room, PSVita, WiiU Gamepad, iPad, and iPod Touch all have cracks in them and on Vita I notice a couple new small cracks or tiny circular cracks almost everyday. And every few days I'll notice cracks in the other systems. The only system that I don't think has been affected is is my 3DS, maybe because you can close its lid? I'm trying to cover the others with sheets when not using them but am still noticing new cracks on them.

I've even gone as far as to open the window in my room to try and create less heat and/or suction, if either or both is the cause of these cracks. I think I noticed new cracks since opening the window but not 100% sure on that.

I can't afford screen protectors until early February and then I'd have to wait until they come in from amazon, plus I think I can only afford one for Vita and WiiU and not my iOS devices. This is a nightmare and have no clue how to stop more cracks from happening.

One thing I can do is that they have a little trailer I could move into but I think I'm traumatized from my last few months in a trailer and really want to avoid that if I can. But if it saves my systems from dying then I'd choose the trailer. Really dumbfounded as to how this is happening.

wiirevolution1 have you considered the fact that you might be living on the twilight zone?
...I have actually. I've googled so many combination of words and found nothing. It seems as if I am the only person this has ever happened to. ._.

I think I've noticed more cracks since opening the window but not sure. Just so many little ones to try and keep track of. This is just insane.

Word of advice to anyone: Don't live in houses with poor suction and/or poisonous heat...if thats what it is. I don't know what it is. I just don't. Noticing new cracks almost each day and have no clue how to stop them is the most disturbing thing I've ever seen happen to my systems.

If it was just one system then I'd think it was the system somehow decomposing, but its all of them. Vita's the worst, followed by WiiU, which some of the cracks on WiiU could've been from the fall but noticed several before the fall and after the move, then the iPad is starting cracking, and now theres a couple on my iPod Touch. Its just so confusing.

I have 3 monitors and when I turn my computer off, all of them turn off except one that's connected by HDMI. It goes to a blue screen and stays there forever until I turn it off myself.

I swear it didn't always do this, does anyone know why my monitor won't auto-sleep or whatever when I turn my computer off?

If you hear/see the word 'mat' by itself or as a syllable at the end of an invented word (e.g. 'jurimat', 'fortimat' or whatever), how would you interpret it spontaneously?

- 'mat' as in 'rug'?
- 'mat' as in 'material'?
- 'mat' as in 'mattress'?
- 'mat' as in 'automat'?
- something else?

This is for a quick linguistic analysis. I need to know what the average native speaker (whatever that means) of English thinks of when they see this word/syllable, and I'm not a native speaker myself. If any of the interpretations above are too far-fetched to you as a native speaker or wouldn't come to mind unless you thought hard about it, please let me know.

Also, if there are any other obvious meanings or interpretations I've missed, please tell me what they are. Can't think of any other. Thanks, guys.

I actually think of someone who is of something. Like a diplomat. The other thing I would think is probably, yeah, 'material'.

Interesting. So, kinda like 'automat'? To be honest off the top of my head I don't know any other 'person' name that ends with 'mat' besides those two in English. Do you?

I've noticed that people use 'mat(s)' a lot in games where there is crafting to mean 'material' like Diablo 3. Is that where you took that from, or is the word commonly shortened as 'mat' anyway outside of video games?

I would associate a mat with a square/rectangular , flatter rug.

I should have been clearer, sorry. I didn't mean to ask what a mat is, but what this specific combination of letters conjures up when you see it either by itself or at the end of a word (see examples above).

Seeing mat at the end of a word makes my mind try to draw parallels with 'format'.
