Could a horror game figure out what OS somebody has, then have a fake restart/shut down/BSOD screen based on that OS to freak out the player?

Like, would that be possible? What if a videogame took a screenshot of your desktop and somehow "hijacked" it? So it seems like the game has given you a virus of some kind?

What is the most British way to enjoy tea? What brand is most common? What kind (breakfast, earl grey, etc)? What's served in it (milk, sugar, lemon, etc)?

How do I message a cute gaffer without seeming creepy?

From the blue? Man, that's impossible. If you chatted a lil on a thread then cool, I guess. So, if you end up on the same thread, be sure to say something witty, or funny... Preferably a question. Keep it short, though, you don't want to seem too obvious. From there, go private and refer her to some gif or article related to the thread. Stay quite for a while and then say hi from the blue. Not impossible, after all.

Well honestly, most people (your average consumer) use sbranded tea bags, with the market being dominated by PG Tips or Tetley. People usually drink tea at breakfast, 'teatime', at work or after work (anytime actually!) and usually have it with a bit of milk and sugar in teaspoons (but that's dependent on your preferences).

Since I don't really like tea (I'm a coffee man and only like good green tea), I can't comment on the different types of teas.

If you ask BritGAF, you will no doubt get many answers.

EDIT: Twinings too. (as a brand)

You know how when downloading some software it asks you what OS you are using and then has you download the version suited to your OS? Couldn't they just edit the specific files for each version to do that? So a Windows-based version would have a different fake restart screen from a Mac?

Is there a way to change the time on mobile GAF? DST and all.

So where's everyone getting these funny reply icons featuring black men in various poses?

Thecoli.com

You can probably go there and ask for the 'black men'.

About applying for grad school, is it too late to ask my professors for letters of recommendation when deadlines for the letters are in about a month or two?

Can only ask. Just be upfront about the deadline and be able to adequately explain why it took you sometime. There are no yes and no answers to these explanations; shit happens and if they are senior, it won't be the first time.

Hello thread, I was wondering; what happens if you enter the balloon of a hot-air balloon? Like, while it's hot and up.

I get it's just hot, light air inside, but would it affect you in any way? How would it affect you?

Some f*cking stupid thing that been bothering me, in my outlook my inbox keeps saying I have one unread message. I dont. I've looked through my entire inbox, clicked the unread tab, restarted outlook, called our IT support team, I've reslected all the emails, clicked them to unread then read them all and still left with one unread message. It sounds so trivial but it's starting to drive me insane.

This probably won't help but I have this issue crop up every few months with the web outlook (formerly hotmail). The only way to fix it is to use search to find it. i.e. if it's from amazon search for amazon etc. Presuming that there is a ghost email on your end and it isn't just an error, you could try searching from A to Z.

If I root my Nexus 4, will I still get automatic updates without losing root access? I'm too lazy to manually check and install updates. Lollipop is coming so I'm hesitant about rooting now.

ah interesting, but i should clearify what i mean. What i mean is the random websites like tieclasp.com, piemontoloaf.com, and esocks.com

Has to do with the collapse of the dot com bubble which burst around that time. Basically in the late 90s through the early 2000s people lost their goddamn minds with the advent of widely available internet access/subsequent business ideas and a large chunk of it went to shit. Commercial shows the aftermath.

How do hotels count the nights of stay? Do I understand it correctly? I want to check in at Saturday, then we'll leave at Tuesday afternoon. I just book for Saturday, Sunday and Monday night correct? I don't include Tuesday?

Yup, that is correct. Need to check when the checkout time at the hotel is though. Might need to leave the room before noon.

Presumingly an elementary accounting question. Let's say I have a nominal departmental analysis as a case study. there are three columns: debits, credits and balance. Now debits must always = credit, otherwise you have a balance credit or debit.

Now all the entries listed in debit are clearly expenses and all the entries listed as credit are income or grants. Now the totals for each (which I verified). Total credit is larger than total debits and therefore there should be a credit balance.

Now here is what is confusing me. Under balance, it lists all the debits and credits. All the debits are listed positive, whereas credits as negative. This gives a negative total balance, which I thought should be positive. What is wrong?

  1. Debit (all the entries were expenses )
  1. Credit (all the entries were income)
  1. Balance (all entries with debits listed as positive and credits as negative for some reason)

No accounting experience, but surely if you're listing your expenses, then you would want to track how much you spend. So if your number is positive you have spent that amount, but if it's negative you got that much? Makes sense to me

It makes sense under the context the numbers have been assigned i.e. debits positive and credits negative. I was thinking and talking about it more , and perhaps I'm getting too worked upon the whole sign issue, and it's their standard of practice.

I have a question about Google sheets.

I am doing a labor calculation spreadsheet, and i need a formula to do the following :

A single brew on a single day takes 10 hours of labor. A subsequent brew on that day only takes an additional 4 hours. On a new day, the hours are the same.

So in a given week, we may have 3 total brew days where 5 brews are performed. The number of hours would be 38. What formula would i use to calculate this? It can either be a single cell for the input, where the input is total number of brews, or two cells for the input, where one cell is number of brews and one cell is number of days they were done over. But maximum number of brews in a day currently is 2.

Thanks for anyone helping in advance.

Where can I read more about the mathematics behind statistical sample sizes? I'm wondering how it can be known for certain that with a certain amount of test participants, you'd gain for example 99.5% probability for another certain size of the human race. I understand why this is but I'm just unsure of how they reached these very specific numbers.

Maybe the article on confidence intervals may help you, though I just read some of it and some things went over my head.

Did Soundcloud remove tracklists? I'm browsing old sets where the author posted the tracklist as part of the description and these seem to be gone now. Can anyone confirm?

Sorry this is so long. I posted it in the Mental Health thread and wanted to post it here too. It'll sound crazy, but ah well.

I'm sitting here, obsessing over something that happened earlier this morning. A few hours ago or more, to be exact. It's happened a couple of times, because I can't say no to my cat when he paws at my bedroom door to come in and hang out while I game.

I wasn't letting any of my cats in there before, because I'm so paranoid about dust. However, I started letting him in because he'll just lay down and sleep for hours. However, once he's up, he's constantly rubbing against my legs and wanting attention. All I can do is tap him on the head or his nose with the back of my hand, because of the dust worry and also because I'd have to wash my hands again to play games.

(Don't worry: I pet my cats a ton when I'm not down there, and I don't even sleep there. I sleep in a guest room, which used to be mine, and one of my cats sleeps with me there.)

Anyways, this will sound crazy, but:

You know how a cat will shake its head sometimes. Either after cleaning itself, or just at random. Well, he does it when he's down there and the idea of the dander that's flying bugs me. However, I worry most when he does it on the floor, even if he's several feet from my systems.

If he gets close to them, I go a bit crazy and call to him until he comes back or go and use my foot to steer him away.

He's been 4-5 feet away from them, facing sideways and done it. It worries me that he's shaking saliva all over my consoles, but tonight he had just yawned before doing it. I doubt that, even if he did shake saliva it would do anything or much would come out.

I'm sure it's nothing, because the systems seem to work fine. It's not like it happens all the time, but it's happened several times.

I don't have anything to worry about, right? I dust regularly.

Question 2:

Surface dust won't affect a console or computer unless there's a TON of it, right? I hate seeing it, but don't want to dust every five days. I usually dust once a month or so.

Question 3:

How do you get the dust out of the crevice around the open disc drives in new systems? Also, out of the cracks in an X1 controller?

Small amounts of dust or saliva won't damage your systems. Seek treatment for your obsessions.

Canned/compressed air is a great tool for removing dust from cramped spaces filled with sensitive components (e.g. inside a computer).

Thanks. I know they won't, but still obsess constantly. I doubt he even really got (or gets, I guess is the better term) any saliva on them. I go up and look closely with a light over them and don't see anything, other than dust due to the light.

I'm seeking treatment, but thanks. Been doing so for a little while now. I'm on my 5th antidepressant (one was tried twice at different dosages but not counted as such in that total).

Just for reference:

Anafranil x2
Elavil
Prozac
Cipralex
Cymbalta

I had two cats, never vacuumed my system, and almost never dusted.

There was practically nothing on the inside when I cracked open my PS3.

That's reassuring. Thank you for posting it.

My cat's only in my room when I am, and even then he doesn't always come in. So maybe 4 times a week, and he's usually sleeping.

He's a great, well-behaved cat. My post maybe made it seem like I don't like him or like I'm not a nice owner, but it's the exact opposite. I just get scared around my stuff, and try to corral him with my foot. I feel bad not being able to pet him in the basement, because that's where he's the most attentive.

I keep the door closed the rest of the time. Another of our cats will walk in, look around and leave sometimes when it's open, but that's about it.

The male got locked in my room once for a day, because I left him in there when I went upstairs to eat, as I planned to go back and watch hockey with him. Then there was a medical emergency and I spent the night at the hospital/worrying on the couch, and didn't realize he was down there the next day. He sleeps a lot.

Thankfully, he only pooed in an easily accessible area, though he had a bit of stress diarrhea on my bed. I didn't notice a lot of dust, either.
