It's a shame, I liked this guy. I gotta love how in anime, smarts vs brawn. One side is always superior to the other, no question lol.

Show doesn't hold back with the blood eh?

Should I be expecting some kinky royal incest as well?

Isn't Saber supposed to be insanely popular among otaku?

End of an era.

Back in 1990 Nadia would top NewType's poll of most popular female characters. It's not like any one character can stay up at the top forever. Just for reference, here's NewType's top characters of various decades for some perspective on the matter:

I think that's part of how the industry is moving forward right now. It's hard to tell where it will go in another few years, but I've noticed that while 10 years ago there was a lot of "integration" to so speak, these days there is more aggressive attempts at making full-CG scenes instead.

- In Fate/Zero, aside from Berserker, which is mostly intentional, the big CG sequences like the dogfight in 14-15 is pretty much full CG, with the camera, the background, and the objects all being created in a virtual environment and being "directed" that way.

- Black Rock Shooter TV also used full CG action sequences which were completely separate from the 2D character animation scenes in the real world.

- Akito looks like the action sequences will mostly be full CG as well.

I'm not sure Ufotable is the best example because they still mix CGI and traditional animation quite liberally in both Fate/Zero and other works. Black Rock Shooter TV is a valid example of doing CGI mostly right.

Then we have things like Hyōka that try to go the 'hard way', to accomplish certain camera movements and angles (one scene that occurs on a bicycle parking lot comes to mind, from episode 17). I think they can "mask" that integration decently enough thanks to appropriate character motion (in 'full animation' and all) and direction. Not everyone can do that depending on the type of show, sure.

Well, another thing that helps in that kind of example is its background CGI. That tends to integrate better both because it's not animated and because we already accept that backgrounds will usually look different from cel-animated characters.

Dat symbolism and dat penguindrum style. Yup, it's Ikuhara alright. Goddamn, there's more than one heartseed? I gotta thank this heartseed for this experiment... Chibi Inaba :cajun:

Man, why does Yui always have some problems for every experiment?

I didn't even realise that Mari from Evangelion 2.0 made it into the top female characters list despite having a few minutes of screentime. Further proof that such lists are worthless.

:cajun as hell.

Looks like for better or worse, this season won't have a greater conflict after all.

And I just noticed what's been bugging me about Cou's voice. The speaking volume changes! Sometimes mid-sentence even. It's like sometimes she's mumbling and other times she's speaking loudly with that damn squeaky voice of hers.

The tail isn't what I'm focusing on, that's for sure.

tbh, the greater conflict of the first season was pretty awful.

Is this show based off a manga/ln?

And that scene is weird.

I sat on my friends dog's tail before, it wasn't smiling.

It's an original anime. Not based on anything.

What kind of dog was it? Plenty don't care if you lay on their tail provided you don't like jump on it or anything.

Folktales from Japan 25

Once upon a time, the legend of Arjuna was foretold by the existence of a "Listening Hood" that could hear the "words" of all plants and animals (especially snakes trapped in roofs that make people terminally ill), The ancestors of Milo and Otis went on a quest to take back the merchants mythical money growing statues and slumlords actually cared about the wellbeing of their tenants... kinda.

Does anyone know how many cours this is planned for?

edit: looks like it's got 26 episodes listed so next week will probably be the last one :(

There's a reference I didn't expect in this thread.

Well my interest has been piqued, mainly because it's fairly rare to see horror in anime done well. I'll have to add it to my list of things to check out.

I used to have a german shepherd who was super laid-back. Kids would sometimes tug on his ears and tail and he'd be all like "whatevs" and go back to sleep.

Such an awesome dog.

So I begin my long-term anime watching project today: jman2050's 2012(-13?) SHAFTWATCH So I claim to be a Shaft fan but in actuality don't actually have much experience with their shows before SZS, and even some after or during that period. Well that's about to change, as I now set out to go through (almost) every single project Shaft has been prominently involved with since the turn of the millenium in chronological order, whether good, bad, or somewhere in between. Many of these shows I have either never seen or have only seen bits and pieces of, so I'll be going in completely blind for most of them.

And we begin with... Gainax?

(Dotto Koni-chan was actually before this according to wiki, but if I get to it it'll be at a later date. This is more interesting anyhow)

Yes, the first Shaft show is barely a Shaft show at all as far as I know! Instead I begin in the wonderful world of Gainax's back catalog. From the various rumblings I've heard on the interwebz, it seems that people are not terribly fond of the Gainax/Shaft collabs, which consist of Mahoromatic, This Ugly Yet Beautiful World, and He is my Master. I could be totally wrong on this of course, as I said I'm going in mostly blind on these. My knowledge of Mahoromatic consists of A) it's an ecchi romcom that, for its time period at least, pushed pretty far in the fanservice department, and B) its ending is a total kick in the nuts I think? Just for fun, I'm doing the first episode with Index-style a comment-in-real-time-as-you-watch summary. I will probably do this for every first episode and then default to quick impressions for the rest. I warn you though, I am not a particularly funny writer and this whole exercise is merely for my own amusement with the hopes of maybe getting a little bit of discussion on these shows going, so feel free to ignore if you just aren't interested.

Mahoromatic: Automatic Maiden 1

So the verdict? Honestly, I was pretty bored watching through this first episode as they went through all the requisite trappings and cliches that have defined his genre for what is now decades. This is the stuff that Nyaruko mercilessly parodied in its first few episodes. It's probably a symptom of the time period that they play it completely straight to start, and I do wonder if we'll start to see more interesting stuff as it goes along. Or it could just rotely go through every magical girlfriend beat in the book without much deviation, using the ticking time bomb plot device to maintain tension. That COULD work, but it'd take some real execution to pull that off. I mean, Abenoboshi didn't get good until the plot actually got going, so there's a precedent.

On the positive side, after the wholesale move to full digital composition and coloring over the past decade or so, it's always nice to see Gainax's talents at work. The animation (when it's needed) is good, the color scheme is easy on the eyes, and the minimalist watercolor background work is a real sight to behold, quite a contrast to the sterile, boring semi-realistic stuff that's pretty much everywhere nowadays, and that studios like KyoAni have perfected down to a science. The character designs are decent but nothing exceptional. The OP is forgettable but the ED is quite catchy.

Impressions for the rest of the show are gonna be of the somewhat quick short summary style I usually do.

EDIT - I should clarify this is for stuff that I haven't seen to completion, which admittedly is a lot of it. I'll point out shows and such I skip for this reason.

Mahoromatic is the cutest in a genre I lovingly call "kickass robot maids". One of my favorite 90s-early 2000s things.
Regarding the other shows, avoid This Ugly Yet Beautiful World (Kono Minikuku Mo Utsukushii Sekai) like the plague because its totally fucking awful. the only reason I own the series is because it was cheap and it has Akari in it and Akari looks like Mahoro and shes really fucking cute. The show is a complete waste of your time. If Im saying that, you should heed it.

He Is My Master is a hilarious and entertaining maid series with a hedonist asshole for an MC and 3 very cute maid girls. It also has a really horny alligator named Pochi. It is worth watching.

Is Mahoromatic the show with the episode where one girl wants to get bigger breasts but everyone else ends up with bigger tits instead including the boy? I think I watched that.

So let me get this straight- in the future, mankind has invented virtual reality helmets that have no failsafe feature for disabling them; in addition, they can emit microwaves that will kill you. I can only conclude their manufacturer has amazing lobbyists. Everyone who put these things on of their own free will deserves to win a Darwin Award. And apparently we solve battery tech in the next ten years because the helmet somehow runs on self-contained power.

Finally a character otaku can relate to.

You know, the conflict between wanting to escape, and at the same time finding the virtual world more enjoyable than the real one, could be an impetus for some interesting character development in a good show. I don't think I have faith that this is a good show, even though this episode was very well produced.

Also, how in the world would the creator of this game
not get apprehended within days? Everyone knows who he is and he'd have to operate a server network of some kind.
Oh well, I guess you're not supposed to actually think about the premise.

Should be easy to lobby stuff when you can make a fantasy world for anyone.
Just think it's become socially acceptable and an upgrade over existing body suits!
Also wireless charging.

Because he's obviously in a bunker somewhere and probably a generic (everyone dies if I die) bullshit plot device. But yeah, don't think about it. Like how people eat or who's taking care of people.

Haha, that was amazing, and the way Oikawa got told down was hilarious
B-B-BUT THAT'S FORBIDDEN LOVE AND DIRTY
. That whole resolution was great too, and the little story came to a nice end. It was fun, short, and charming.

Also, I love the new girl. She's the best. I mean who doesn't love her... type.

Onto the next season!

So I've been trying to research the two writers assisting Genbutch on the script, that of Aya Takaha(高羽彩) and Makoto Fukami(深見真). Both of them are unusual picks especially Aya Takahara who seems to have no anime credits under her name. I tried to find anything about her in English and failed. I went through some of her stuff in Japanese but my language skills hit a bit of a limit. All I could cipher is general information such as her being a playwright and some irrelevant personal details. They both are essentially unknown which is somewhat striking when you compare that to everyone else on the staff list. Fukami seems to be most famous for Young Gun Carnaval. I've read through a bit of YGC and it seems Fukami is a bit of a gun-nut. It also seems very dual-toned in themes and is much more serious than the premise would let on. I'm guessing Urobuchi might have wanted her due to his work on Phantom as similar themes pop up.

In short, I have very little clue how they ended up in those positions.

They're not really unknown. They just don't work on anime. The same can be said of Motohiro, who has never worked on an anime production before. The composer Yuugo Kanno is not someone who is particularly prolific in anime work either, since he usually composes for live action dramas and movies. With how "everything is the same" being a common complaint against the anime industry, especially creatively, I don't think it's surprising that when people are trying to create something original or different, they turn to people outside of the industry or someone with a different perspective to work on it.

Some random examples:

- Re:Cutie Honey and Gurren Lagann were both written by a playwright who isn't an anime screenwriter. He handle the series composition as well.

- Usagi Drop's script and series composition was handled by a new screenwriter, and it was his first job.

- Fate/Zero's screenplays were adapted by a team of internal Ufotable staff assisted by Takumi Miyajima. None of the staff are screenwriters by trade, but rather office staff who were given a chance to improve their skills in the areas they had interest in, Miyajima is not an anime writer either, he is a videogame writer who has worked on a ton of shitty Tales games.

There are probably many more examples which I simply can't think of at the moment because they're not related to stuff at the top of my mind, but in general, it's important to remember that the entertainment industry in any region is usually not a very big space. Even across different mediums, people know each other, and are actively aware of other works and productions which interest them. So it's not really that unusual that such people from time to time will cross over and work in spaces they have not previously worked in. It really depends on the opportunity given by producers and project leaders. What is obvious is that Psycho-Pass is definitely a project that FujiTV wants to be "more than just anime" in terms of demographic reach.

How would the consumer have any idea about these things?

And even though there are answers to most of your questions, they don't really matter. A show shouldn't need to address every little detail of its premise for the viewer to accept it -- especially one as simple and straightforward as SAO's.

I know I'm in the minority on this, but I really like how much SAO leaves unsaid. Time-skips and all.

Women will eat you if you aren't careful.

Also, the whole process on each of the thing they're trying is pretty good, and the group dynamic is just as fun as always.

I agree with you to some extent. There really isn't any need to see what is going on in the real world. However, I do think glossing over certain stuff in the game world isn't the most effective way to tell this story. Yeah, we don't need to see every single floor explored and completed, but that also doesn't mean we should jump beyond the halfway point in no time at all.

Well, it's generally a good idea if your premise seems well-thought out.
