I'd like to formally apologize for calling this show Dude-On! back when I watched the first episode in an uninformed attempt to establish a comparison with that one KyoAni show about moe pigs. I see now that it was a completely baseless and unjustified comparison as in contrast to that other show this one does seem to have a semblance of a plot or at the very least a goal that the characters can strive towards and strive towards they do since instead of locking themselves up in a clubroom day after day stuffing their fat faces with cake and tea and doing absolutely nothing of any worth they actually do get shit done and are putting in the work towards attaining their goals. The one sore spot amidst all these compelling characters is Gou-chan. Her schtick is already getting old at this point and the show would be better off if they reduced her appearances to the bare minimum if possible, imho. Ama-chan-sensei is alright.

In summary, thank you based KyoAni. All is forgiven.

Lies. Gou is like half the appeal of the show.

Yo... so watched the first 2 episodes of the Giant Robo OVAs.... when the fuck is this suppose to be "really good" instead of just ok? I was feeling Imagawa's first few episodes of Shin Mazinger Shougeki! Z-Hen way more than this....

And fuck me I couldn't believe the actual starting point for episode 2 was 10 mins in.

When you look at how far apart the releases were, the recap sections become understandable.

Lies. Gou is like half the appeal of the show.
She's not even close to half. The show actually has some comedic merits beyond her.

I had a flick through the first volume of the Crime Edge BD's and they got rid of the crappy filters they'd turn on for the battles and the more gruesome bits (so now the blood's actually red instead of brown), the censorship, and they even added all this blood spraying everywhere now. Huge improvement.

Are you watching it with the original dub? Either way, stick with it.

Futari wa Milky Holmes 01

So it looks like they took away all the comedy, all the nonsense, all the useless Milky Holmes, pretty much everything that was great from the first two seasons and gave us two girls walking around eating crepes for 10 minutes.

I guess this is gonna be srs now, with fighting, Milky Holmes being useful, something something. I mean it could be good if they focus on that. But instead I just assume they'll just spend most of the episodes having the two girls eat crepes before fighting one of the villains at the end of the episode just to remind us they exist.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Speaking of lewd, I see the art director forgot to include "SPEEDO BULGES" in her animation memo.

I guess she didn't want to traumatize all the male artists.

I hope Kyo Ani learns about lower body sometime soon.

I'm sure DTL is hella disappointed by the lack of lower body.

Aw the showdown got delayed :(
Next eps for real tho!

I love the heart to heart talk between Chirico and Ypsilon, the rivalry have good moment right now.. I think the stuff that got under appreciated on this series is how good the characterization are.. yes the method that they take are very basic and blunt, but I love that take. No roundway in dialogue, not trying to put philosophical metaphor. So many show fail at that, instead just being blunt and honest like this show does.

Samurai Champloo ep. 10-14

Phenomenal two-part episode to serve as the series midpoint. The first half of episode 14 especially was incredible.

Today's seiyuu that I managed to recognize by voice: Sho Hayami.

"Remember Global Warming? Well we're gonna just speed that up and blow up the North Pole." This Japanese military guy looks exactly like Apollo Justice and it is bugging the snot out of me. So 360 million lives are in danger from "environmental" effects, but nobody thinks there'll be any backlash from BLOWING UP THE FUCKING NORTH POLE? Have funny explaining to kids where Santa lives, NOW.

So I get that Naru's body is fusing with Coral (which is a stupid idea), but like, why does this give her two little horns in exactly the coolest spots? Why does Naru get to pilot the Nirvash T-0 when even Ao doesn't? Why Naru? Why Truth?

Why, Bones? WHY!?

"It feels like we're nearing the last episode!" But we aren't, Elena. We've still got so far to go. They haven't raped and defiled, let alone eviscerated the memories of E7 yet. PFoR got "attempted rape" and this show so far has "assault and battery" but the memories are still there. It's going to be a long, dark stretch before the end.

I will admit that the constantly portraying Eureka with a halo that this show and PFoR are up to is sort of an okay touch. Oh God, Naru shedding Eureka? EWWWW
Ao needs to stop taking sleeping pills. The Soviet Union still exists in this?

Wow. I mean,
erasing folks from history? That's not cliche. No sir.

Alright Metrotab, as promised. Warning: LoGH discussion!:

Sorry for the wait, but I've been changing PCs and Internet the past few days! (100+ Mbps ahoy!)

I think the episode ended the series perfectly and opens up a lot of discussion on
the contrasting natures of Yang and Reinhard's respective deaths
. I always love discussing that with people. Overall, it was calm and poetic end to a brilliant show.

There are a lot of contrasting elements to compare, but the most poignant one is that they each got what the other wanted.
Yang died in space while commandeering a war effort, Reinhard with friends and family in the comfort of his home.

You know what question I'm about to ask you:
Do you think he purposely took that explosion for the Kaiser?
Oberstein was a necessary character to the series and to Reinhard. Jexhius put it best at one point in that Oberstein did the things no-one wanted to do but had to be done
(allowing for an entire civilization to get nuked clearly cements his dark determination)
.

I think he did in order to convince
the Terraists had hit somebody, rather than an empty room. He already jumped in front of Reinhard once before, with the assassination of Kircheis.

You get a real sense of history when watching this show. When I talk about events, I feel like I'm reciting something from a history text. I can't relate any other show I've watched to a similar experience. The only other works in any medium that is comparable is the Tolkienverse. The constant chess games, who the key players were, etc. You really invest a lot into the series.

I think one of the series' strong points is its worldbuilding, which is actually quite remarkable for such a character-focused show. All these little bits of side-information, through the course of a rather large OVA series, really builds some consistency to this universe, fleshes it out. That may also be the nature of a novel adaptation, since literature lends itself to being very descriptive.

There will come a day when I have an encyclopedic knowledge of the characters in this show and I will feel damn proud. Damn proud. A related point to this, which I'd like your opinion, is that one of my main takeaways from this show was not so much how characters lived but how they died. Morbid I know but I walk away from LoGH with almost every named character's death having some sort of impact/meaning. I'm not talking about the obvious main/major characters but I just felt that death in this series always had some meaning. It fed into backstories, prophecies, metaphors, key events, progressions, you name it. Contrast this to a Tomino work where literally 80% of the cast can die and with little meaning at all. LoGH just has a masterful way of handling its characters and their roles in the bigger picture. I mean, yes there were some "throwaway" deaths but I honestly believe they're in the minority.

Related to this,
the knowledge that any of these characters could die at any moment, especially after Kircheis' death, made the battles that more intense.

Wholeheartedly agree. Music is a huge takeaway for me from this series. It was just so elegantly done. I can't imagine LoGH with anything but a cladsical soundtrack. I hope that doesn't make me sound elitist either. I remember Symphony No 1 in C-Minor by Buckner being in the series somewhere. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qp1sG09g3Kc. Can you have starship battles to anything but stuff like this?

Something I actually forgot to mention, but the original anthems they composed are very beautiful too. Especially the FPA's, which sounds better to my ear than my actual national anthem!

Free ep 3!
Because Kyoani realises Fujoshis pay more to see men in a swimsuit than Gou/Ama in a swimsuit.
Easier to be self-insert if you just see yourself as the helpful manager as opposed to the equal, I suppose. :p

ANNCast this week is with the Viz people. They tried to pimp Tiger & Bunny around to Toonami and other networks (which I guess is SyFy?) but no on wanted it.

Happy (Belated)Birthday Gintoki. :)

Thanks!

I was always thinking about watching Crime Edge but wondering who the actual main character is in the show always stopped me. So who is the main character in that show? I hope it's the guy with the scissors because I'm kinda tired of looking through the person being protected eyes, instead of the person who's protecting them (though I don't know the story of Crime Edge so I don't even know if he's protecting her). Kinda like Inuyasha where you see through Kagome's point of view instead of Inuyasha's when he's doing the fighting.

So who is the main character of that show? Also is it any good for action scenes?

The dude with the scissors is the MC and the fight scenes have some pretty nicely animated moments. I'd wait till all the BD's are out first though before watching it.

Well that's disappointing to hear :(

Seems like it would have been the perfect Toonami show

Yeah, they say they pretty much delayed releasing it because they were hoping that a network would pick it up for "first run".

Other random news from the podcast - Neon Alley will get on demand programming at some point, and Viz's biggest selling discs are Lagrange, something called Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan, and Vampire Knight. Blood Lad is doing well for them.

At least Lagrange is getting some love somewhere.

Man I'm so sorry for thinking Rei would be boring, he's so awesome and he's so good with Nagisa. This show has really hit its stride. Good comedy and characters throughout. I hope they lay off with the sister lusting. I thought it was funny the first time but I'm getting pretty tired of it now.

Chuck

Still without luck
Madoka 12

Alright, that was a pretty cool ending. Still didn't like quite a few of the character decisions from 1-11 but it ended quite well. Overall I enjoyed it would a few caveats. 7/10

Mega Man Sins 4

Mega Man meets a girl!
And he doesn't brutally murder her!
This episode was still pretty depressing. Especially the viewpoint of "I love you so much, that's why I'm going to ruin you." At first that just sounds fucked up, but when you think about it,
killing Casshern probably would be an act of love, since Casshern wants to die and can't, and everyone he meets dies a horrible death.
Which is a really depressing thought. Also
pools of blood as far as the eye can see.

Oh, and I love that exchanges with Casshern tend to go like this:

Person who will die a horrible death for having passed within ten miles of Casshern: Speaks to Casshern.
Casshern:Stares for like a minute without saying anything
Episode passes and person dies a horrible death.

I hoped to have never seen this picture again.

Damn you Corvo.

Miki T is a comedic titan.

Megammern Sins 5

Zero meets Omega!
After brutally slaughtering bandits and innocents alike in a fit of Berserker rage. Also he tries to die in atonement for his sins, but Action!Ciel can't bring herself to do it. Also Rush is just like, chilling the entire time.
Not exactly brutally depressing, but only because we've seen these things happen already. No fear, though, something super depressing will still happen in the near future.

Sins of a Cashew 4

LOOK! A WEIRD PERSON!

And her name is Sasorina Sophita. Who loves fighting and referring to herself in third person. Friender left Cashew after realizing he couldn't break him, and more people want his protein, but for once
no one died, Sophita still lives!
.

First person to get through his shell.
