As far as I can tell, what's called "fake yuri" in English is generally what the word "yuri" itself is used to mean in Japanese.
So Yuruyuri is exactly what its title says it is.
Whereas if it were about actual lesbians it would be called something like "Crying Flowers."

Nah, "yuri" definitely refers to actual lesbian content (albeit usually of the idealised kind with a focus on "purity").

YuruYuri's title is accurate because the "yuru" part means "lighthearted", so it's telling you from the get-go that it's going to have yuri undertones but not really take any of it too seriously. The YuruYuri mangaka, Namori, actually also released a single-volume manga called "YuriYuri", which is exactly what the title would imply - a collection of short stories about actual lesbian relationships.

(Of course you fairly often see the word "yuri" attached to things that don't really contain proper lesbian content in the Japanese community for the same reason as you do in the English community - because people like to get their yuri goggles on =p)

Not really. Yuri simply refers to lesbianism of any kind, being the spinoff of the historical flower term for gay men, Bara, but stuck more for genre purposes.

Western fans did adopt a term for what you describe, but you have it backwards as yuri is still used for the explicit end in that case.

There's nothing wrong with Anno in there!

Also, looks absolutely gorgeous as expected. That earthquake, holy shit.

Kiniro Mosaic will save me. ;_;
Symphogear probably has the most fake-yuri potential for you. Or Dog and Scissors. :p lol

All the more reason for him to finally graduate from fake yuri poop and start getting into legit. good yuri like Honey & Honey and Ohana Holoholo!
I don't think that will ever happen. :(

Doesn't one of the YuruYuri spinoff manga series feature an actual lesbian relationship?
It's implied, but the older sister says she "loves" one of the other girls in her group.

Japanese lesbians use "bian" as a way to identify themselves in the community. Here's the forward from Honey and Honey:

Again, SDBurton am cry. :(
Of course, they still have the concept of femme and butch, which manifests itself in the whole "short haired sempai is hawt" trope we see in a lot of yuri manga.

Eh. Talho just isn't cute. She and Holland make a nice couple, but I wouldn't hit that.

New Talho, maybe. Original Talho looked great.

Amazing. Fall is going to be awesome.

Whatever. Ippo manga spoilers:
Ippo makes zero progress towards an actual match with Miyata,

Ippo makes zero progress towards the world title.

Ippo makes zero progress towards actually kissing Kumi.

It's the slowest shit ever.

Ippo is making some pretty good progress towards the World Title now. Really, the only major reason to complain about the last couple of years in the manga is all of the Itagaki wank.

Oh, I'm not denying that she's good-looking from an objective standpoint. I can appreciate that she's pretty attractive; she's just not my type in the slightest, so she goes right to the bottom of my list.

I think we can all agree that early-series Talho is infinitely superior to late-series Talho though. ~.~

... You're taking this seriously?

Killing yourself because an anime character changed hats definitely should qualify for some kind of award in stupidity.

Not taking that stupid 4chan thing seriously, just expressing my disgust at the Darwin Awards and making fun of suicide victims.

Or relaxed, laid back, lazy, e.g. Yurumates.

But anyway, like if you look up "yuri" on Japanese wikipedia, the very first sentence says:
百合(ゆり)とは、女性の同性愛、またはそれに近い友愛のこと。"Yuri refers to lesbianism, or to friendship that is very close to that."

And then if you read through the history of the term, you see stuff like:
日本映画界では少女同士のプラトニックな関係や女性同士のポルノグラフィックな関係が描かれてきたが、このうち特に前者が百合映画と呼ばれる場合があり
"In the Japanese movie industry, movies of female platonic relationships and female-female pornographic relationships have been portrayed, and of those, particularly the former have been called 'yuri movies.'"

These usages of "yuri" for "really close friendship" stuff jibes with my observation of people in Japanese using "yuri" way more frequently for soft tease stuff than real lesbian stories...but thinking about it more, I'm suffering some pretty heavy selection bias here because of mostly paying attention to anime, light novels, and eroge. I'm not too familiar with the contents of, say, Comic Yuri Hime.

ippos last few fights have been pretty dull though and lasted forever.

The recent one where
fucked the shit out of that guy with 1 punch that took like 10 pages was pretty great though.

I think this goes hand-in-hand with the term's (and the market's) bias towards idealised and "pure" relationships. Explicit content is less likely to be referred to as "yuri" because oh my, that's not something a pure maiden should be doing! whereas close female friendships ("faux-yuri") are more liable to be categorised that way because they seem like romance with all the "impurity" of actual physical relations removed from the equation.

I still feel like the core meaning of the term is actual romance between two females, though.

It's confusing because the manga marketing uses yuri as a blanket term. Comic Yuri Hime's stories range from simple friendship-esque stories to full on lesbian-angst, depending on the author.

Most stories tend to exist in between, where the sexuality of the characters are readily apparently but the characters exist totally divorced from the social context.

One interesting thing I learned from Honey and Honey is that, at least in 2006-7, there is a section of the Tokyo Pride parade that prohibits photographs. Presumably because although these people want to represent their community, they are still closeted.
Now, I have no idea how you stop people from photographing a parade, but less than a decade ago that's how worried people were about their friends and family knowing about them.

I think this goes hand-in-hand with the term's (and the market's) bias towards idealised and "pure" relationships. I tease SDBurton with fake-yuri because he mashes any two girls together willynilly.

Sort of like DTL with boys. lol

"I'm not racist!" "So why is everyone speaking ting tong ling wong in this show you're watching"

My goal in life is to make enough money that I can buy a DeLorean and mod it out to look like Marty's. I will then hit the interstate and go 88. Then I will content with life.

You could've just appeased his racist ass and played the dub. I mean, it has Mark Hamill in it.

Wait this happened?

Wait what the fuck, in Idaho??

Are you be sarcastic? :kayosonme

Isn't Idaho where that big NeoNazi camp is/was?

Please tell me he isn't a Poli Sci student.

Megas XLR 102

So this isn't even an anime, but Felix Orion requested I post impressions here, so I will until someone request that I not. The fights are a hoot in this show, so far, and while the animation definitely reminds me of last decade's style (it looks so much like a recent TMNT show to me), there are some shots, particularly of Kiva's face, in these early episodes that look kinda goofy, and I'm hoping that gets cleaned up as the series goes on.

This particular episode focused on Coop, Jaimie and Kiva fighting a guy who is basically Elvis and MODOK fused into one. The episode's best part comes at the end, when
They go to the food court/planet of the Amazons.
What I like most is that, while Coop and Jamie are losers, Coop is still portrayed as more competent than Kiva at times, and moreover, neither of them seems overly concerned with putting the moves on Kiva. Like, I dunno, its just kinda nice that they're so ambivalent regarding her.

It is kinda weird that Jamie, being a failure of a lady's man but still trying in a lot of the episodes, doesn't make moves on her, but yeah it fits cause then you get this fun comedy dynamic between them.

I hope the Giants don't totally fall apart this year the way they did last year. As a fan, it was pretty embarrassing.

What's up with all the upper body lately? Probably the weakest OP despite that. It's a shame that all long-running series eventually end up having lazily made OPs.

Typical of Mutta to
screw up at something only to get an advantage on everyone else. The abrupt change of mood from the Sharon arc to this is disconcerting, but I guess that's the best way to exemplify that life goes on. :firehawk

The Nanba brothers live on luck. lol

Darwin Awards are amazing. Some of those people deserve the notoriety.

Darwin awards don't always involve someone killing themselves from something stupid. Sometimes they just castrate themselves from something stupid.

But none of them are for intentional suicides. It's not making fun of people who needed therapy or help, it's mostly making fun of people who needed a brain.

No matter how stupid, I just find making fun of death incredibly tasteless. It's one of the reasons I stopped going to the OT; a lot of threads with stupid deaths have puns for the first few pages and I find that disgusting.

I don't mind the occasional dark humor but yeah, it was bad there for a while. Current "first post is always right" fad seems like it just encourages people to say stupid shit immediately for notoriety.

Reading some random people musing over this:

I have to wonder if Yuruyuri is really a "yuri manga."
It doesn't feel like they're really engaging in romance.
Although by that standard, Shimaizumu and such wouldn't be yuri manga either.

sCNuiWxXP
"More than friends, less than lovers" is the whole point of Yuruyuri.
There's a decent number of people who like that sort of thing.

OiPQtezr0
I don't dislike yuri-"ish" works and I'm not disparaging them.
I'm just wondering if "more than friends, less than lovers" is something we should be using the word "yuri" for.

sCNuiWxXP
There's a bunch of people who want "yuri" to mean precisely that. And when there's actual clear romantic feelings they classify it as "lesbian" instead.
Looking at the origins of the word "yuri," that's a mistaken usage, but a surprising number of people support using it that way.

The second guy is saying the same thing cnet128 is saying (that the real meaning and origin is romantic feelings, not just close friendship), and it sounds like I've fallen into the group of people using it the weird other way.
