Maruo vs Nabae

I'm not entirely sure of how I feel about this match. There's a bunch of stuff in it that I like, but there are just as much things that I don't like.

I really liked how Maruo used techniques from all his matches (even from that prick Iwasa) to help the change of pace. I didn't like how Nabae kept thinking, in a "trying to tell the viewer" vibe, that Maruo was playing "wrong" because of that.

I really liked Maruo's confidence starting the match and breaking Nabae's serve two times in a row, I wasn't expecting it at all. I didn't like how they set this up as "zone". I guess this must be a real thing in actual sports, but just like in Kuroko, they dress this up as a fantasy power-up way too much. Him trying to get in the zone for half the match got tiring.

They played the "Nabae used to be a crying wimp and now he is serious" card waaay too much, and it never paid off. Maybe it will sometime in the future, but to the degree it was said in the last couple of episodes, you'd think he'd break at least a bit now.

Again, it felt like they made Araya the winner just because he never could be while Takuma was a junior. I didn't buy the excuse they were trying to set for it at the end at all.

Also, being an anime took out some of my investment in rooting for Maruo. I say that because the match against Nabae was the semi-final and there was only 4 episodes left when it started. There was no way this championship would finish by then if they showed both matches. Also, when Nabae got the lead, judging by how much time had passed in the episode, I could guess that it'd end there. They would need some time for a short epilogue. It took the tension out of some scenes knowing the result beforehand because of these technicalities. I guess that's the price I have to pay by experiencing this in anime form, so I can't complain much, but still.

Lastly, I need to say that while I love the Maruo x Natsu pair, Maruo is an awful boyfriend. Watch the replay of the finals later, dude, and go cheer for your girlfriend while she's playing, dammit.

The bromance handshake between Maruo and Nabae after their match was great.

I'll be reading the manga next because I have the patience of an ant, but I'll definitely watch S3 when it hits.

Recommended. And I don't give a rat's ass about real tennis.

As lifeless as those wheels she keeps modeling.
Yo damn son.

Saki Episode 4:

I am not convinced that this club, indeed this series, is anything more then a very elaborate plan to hook Saki up with Nodoka.
It's probably the ur-Yuri anime text. Considering there are now hundreds of girls and each girl has a ship with another girl in faithful monogamous pairings.

At the rate everyone's quitting, Miyamori's going to end up promoted to production manager. Or... heaven forbid... Tarou...

The hot pot meeting between Miyamori's old classmates illustrated how each of the five has a different perspective on their job and how it lines up with their dream. Ema is working at what she's dreamed off, but worried about the quality of her work and concerned about ending up a failure. Zuka is willing to accept any work she can get as she attempts to break into the industry and have a career in the first place. Mii is working a comfortable, financially secure job, but feels her soul being drained and so decides to quit. Rii is still a somewhat clueless university student without a clear career path, but is enthusiastic about writing and research in preparation for what she hopes to do. Miyamori herself is too caught up in the daily grind of her job to give any thought about her dreams for the future. That was driven home hard after her friends dispersed and she began to think about how empty her future was only to be roughly cut off by a fantasy sequence about being overwhelmed by work. While these five are all working in artistic fields of varying kinds connected to the animation industry, the places at which they find themselves in life are familiar to many if not all working adults, even if they've never been involved with the arts. Honda leaving the industry entirely to pursue his dream of being a confectioner also provides a dramatic example of someone switching career paths entirely. It is elements like these that give Shirobako thematic substance beyond just being a lesson in how anime is made.

Hahahaha Nanoha Vivid Season 2 was announced and STILL NOTHING HAS BEEN SAID ABOUT THAT THIRD MOVIE THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE OUT IN 2014.

It's like they're trying to make it their Half-Life 3 or something.

From what I'm seeing, this actually isn't Vivid S2. This is something completely different with Vivid Characters. Nanoha is nowhere to be seen. What in the fuck is happening?

I don't know and at this point I don't really care.

I just want them to go back to a setting that takes place after A's or during their teenage years.

Noragami 12 (End of 1st season)
Just finished it. Overall, really enjoyed it and thought it was a pretty solid show (would prolly give it a 7.5-8/10). Action/animation was really fun (that last fight was really cool in particular), good music (ayy Lotus Juice lol), thought the story/universe was actually pretty neat and it just has some really cool/charming characters (Yato's the fucking man and I really like Hiyori too). The parts with Yukine were a bit on the cringeworthy side and I felt it could have been handled a bit better, but at least that part of the story wrapped up before it got tooooo overbearing. Overall, it was a pretty fun/charming show and I'm glad I watched it.

Probably gonna start Aragato/S2 tomorrow.!

Besides kuromuko, and delta there is not a show I'm interested in. I think I'll watch ReLIFE since all the episodes are out. Also just learned Planetarian got an anime. Still don't know what it about really about just that I spread that shit all over steam.

Berserk (1997) 7

We're starting to get into some real politics here. Griffith is pretty savvy in the way he treats the king and the other nobility, deftly smoothing the way for his continued rise to power. I'm still not sure what he intends to get out of Guts - success in battle in the short-term, sure, but there seems to be something else going on.

Trigger Anime Expo Write-up-

Why read when you can watch?

It should be noted that the resolution is shit, I couldn't film everything continuously (as my cellphone storage ran out), and I couldn't keep my cell phone straight for the entire filming. I filmed primarily the Kiznaiver section but did take some notes for the Space Patrol segment.

-Nico's original design was really cool. She looked more punk and was taller.
-Tenga's original design is pretty much identical to the version we got.
-Hisomu's original design is pretty sharpely different too. He looks like a Takeuchi (Fate/Stay) design with the purple hair and downtrodden expression. Nowhere near as flamboyant/bishounen as the current design.
-Yoneyama was the chief animation director.
-Yoneyama did image boards as well such as the opening in episode 1. Yoshinari did the animation for that sequence.
-Hard to see in the video but the gengas had a lot of coloring to them, especially the close-ups.
-Yoneyama cried while working on the final episode. Sushio did too, but it was from stress.
-Sushio focused on the motions and let Yoneyama touch up the details.
-Sushio ended up drawing a lot of Kamina when drawing Tenga.
-Experienced animators like Sushio had to work on the layouts, motions, and acting due to the number of characters. Was difficult to add numerous characters in a frame.
-Shota Iwasaki was present and he talked about his work in episode 7.
-Iwasaki would fix up cuts on his own time. Project managers got annoyed when the cut bags go missing.
-Sushio fixed up a lot of scenes in episode 7, not just the larger ones.
-Kiznaiver's schedule was a lot better than Kill La Kill's, which they finished the day it aired.
-For Sushio, Gurren Lagann was his second youth. Kiznaiver was his third youth. Yoneyama said in the second panel that she agreed that Kiznaiver was her second youth.
-Sushio will work on the Little Witch Academia TV series. Watch the legend come back to life!
-The Kiznaiver BDs should have much better detail than the broadcast version.
-Imaishi is working on three new projects. It's unclear if Little Witch Academia is considered one of the three as it was later said 2-3 projects were being worked on by him. So I guess it's still in flux?

Now as for the Space Patrol Luluco segment:

-Imaishi initially wanted to do Space Patrol around the time of Kill La Kill but Nakashima shot him down.
-Imaishi was adamant about doing Space Patrol.
-The original version of Space Patrol was literally supposed to last a year.
-Lalaco was supposed to be the main villain initially. Nova was supposed to be Lalaco's lackey.
-It felt as if there were two teams at Trigger, one was living in high school and the other (Luluco) was in middle school
-Overjustice is a presence that surpasses Inferno Cop and was on the phone in the Egypt episode of Inferno Cop
-One demand of Amemiya was that there be a character of Justice. His belief of Justice is the strongest in the industry.
-The desk is connected to hell
-More will be picked up on in the future series of Inferno Cop.
-For the Luluco VA work, if they thought it was funny they would just accept the take even if it was off script.
-There were three chances during a VA recording and they each had a different title.
First chance: Justice Chance
Second Chance: For Real Chance
Final Chance: You Little Shit Chance
-There was a lot of adlib.
-Imaishi asked Wakabayashi if he liked anything and Wakabayashi replied shimapan. Hence Trigger-chan's bikini.
-I guess Trigger-chan is 18 years old at the end of the series or transforms into her eighteen year old self.
-Trigger-chan has the ability to dimension hop into future Trigger series. She might find Nova in one of them.

For the Little Witch Academia TV series, a bunch of concepts were shown and a 'hype' video was as well.

-It's probably going to air in Spring 2017 as Yoshinari said that he wanted to show the completed show off at the next AX.
-Some background art was shown of both a town and something closer to a city. The town is probably the same one as in Enchanted Parade. I can't remember if there is a big clocktower in the middle of the town but if there is then it's almost certainly the same town.
-The first background art looked like Yoshinari due to the shading and a later one like Kaneko due to the brushstrokes. I don't know if that means they're going for handpainted backgrounds for the TV series but one can hope.

-Akko's outerwear was shown and it's identical to the above art in design.
-Sucy's casual clothes were shown off too and they were really stylish.
-Lotte was ignored as usual.

-Diana's casual clothes looked identical to the above, even with the same coloring. Surprisingly tomboyish.

-New classmates were shown off. There's a new group of three, one of which is in the images above, taken from the LWA2 kickstarter.
-Yes there were wizards shown. Cue the tears over the Garden.
-Lots of older witches were displayed. Half the art was of older women but I didn't see Sucy's mom in there but she could have been reworked. They said that a number of the characters shown in that segment might get cut though. Yoshinari said last AX that he wanted to tell Shiny Chariot's story so there might be a bigger focus on the older witches.
-There's more emphasis on world building as magic cops were shown and they look like the minotaurs in the first episode but with cop uniforms on. Kinda reminded me of Harry Potter in how it looks like they're establishing a magical world with their own police and everything.
-You could tell they're trying to expand past the school and go into larger things. For example there was a drawing of a beautiful lady sitting in a chair/throne with tree roots growing in and out of it, it reminded me of the Lady of the Lake mythology.
-There was art shown from the first episode and it was a large gate in the middle of nowhere on top of a grassy hill. I took that as implying they're not going to use the previous films as episodes but also that they're delving into the larger aspects of the world.
-Yoshinari wants a grand finale.

-There was a 'private' video from Takafumi Hori of Constanze transforming the above boat into a huge mech. It was super cool and really evoked Gurren Lagann. They emphasized that it was private so I don't know if that was a hint that it was going to be in the show or Hori screwing around. People were screaming. I want this so bad. Magical Girls Gurren Lagann. Edit: Well now I don't feel so special. :(
-Oh and Shigeto Koyama is coming weekly to the Trigger studio despite not working on Little Witch Academia TV. They pretty much confirmed that he's working on designs for a new TV series at Trigger but didn't specify whether it was the Imaishi one.

On the second day, they had a panel where they were pretty much drawing for the entire period.

They ran out of time before Sushio could draw. There wasn't anything discussing their projects but more so about the artists themselves.
-Yoneyama wants to overthrow Sushio.
-Iwasaki is playing too much Splatoon. He gave out his Nintendo ID which I'm not sure was a good idea.
-Koyama's favorite anime is Neon Genesis Evangelion.
-Yoneyama starts drawing by thinking about the layout and poses.
-Here's a short video of Yoneyama drawing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXhBtQj3CsE

That's about it. Also here's a link to my Kawamori panel write-up.

On a final note, would like to give a heart fuck you to Anime Expo management for multiple organizational and planning failures during the weekend. Had to withstand a literal stampede to get into the Trigger panel on Sunday. On Monday they canceled Tsurumaki and Shintani's autograph sessions because they forgot that they had booked airplane tickets for them that morning. Ooops. Maybe they should have told people that before they waited hours in the morning for an autograph ticket. I also don't think Kenji Nagasaki ever showed up but that might be Funimation's fault rather than AX.

Thanks for this post. Your reporting is very much appreciated!

Super excited by this! Looking great, but I'm a little bit worried about how the movie will be paced considering there is just so much to adapt here. There's enough in the manga to make a 13 episode anime if you pace is kinda quickly, so idk how in the world they will fit everything in 1 movie. There'll probably be a few plot threads and minor moments cut, I'm guessing (which I'm quite fine with).

My Hero Academia 8-13(END)

I can definitely see why some people might have not been enamoured with this season. It has a very slow pace which makes week by week watching a chore (though watching it via a binge session is actually quite enjoyable) and even in the manga this beginning section was the least interesting tbh. My only real gripe on the show is that I wish the background art was better done. I see what they were going for, but a bit more detail and less... smeared looking textures would have gone a long way, I think.

Can't wait for the Tournament and Stain Arcs for next season. The wait for them is gonna be killer though :p

Honestly, despite the pacing and whatnot, I still highly enjoyed this season and can only hope that next season is even better.

Recommended.

The show is all too relate-able for those in a creative field. Practically, what they face/endure is also part of the creation process so I think it still is a lesson on how anime is made, only more practical - you don't ask and get answers to questions on just the work but also how it affects at a personal level.

Bad. Writing is just absolutely terrible as little effort is put in to establishing who these characters are and the fight at the end is hilariously contrived.

It's a shame too as the mecha action is some of the best I've seen in awhile. It's really gorgeously animated and there's a certain heft to the robots' movements.

Why can't they put these visuals into something where the writing isn't turgid? I hate the anime industry so much.

Yeah. Speaking generally, I don't think I've seen any anime that deals with what it is to be a working adult as well as Shirobako. That's not a common subject in anime, of course, but even those that do touch on it, such as Space Brothers, are often primarily interested in other kinds of drama.

well given the odds of a season 3 are sitting at like a 1% chance of happening at best, likely a good choice :(

also very true, but at least the new people translating it are trying.
they keep promising weekly updates for it, maybe sometime they actually will.

i mean at the worst case we are finally out of the match that lasted about 2 years worth of english manga chapter releases lol. (I think it was a 20 chapter match or so :p... these are weekly chapters not monthyl)
