I like this. The characters are pretty likable and definitely like the themes that they are setting up between the characters. It looks great and is definitely grounded enough oddly for a setting that has tengus and tankuis. Also so much :firehawk I love it.
Uchouten Kazoku 1

This maybe the happy, feel-good series of the season, Tsuritama style, if the opening is anything to believe. It uses a bit of in media res which combined with the magical realism it makes for an interesting way to start the series. Not that confusing, but intriguing. At the end you really want to know more about the characters and their relations. For example there is flashback (wit a beautiful scene, btw)... but in the present situation the characters are very different. What happened between hem?
Mmm ok, maybe the series isn't that happy, there is more here.

For now, the best series this season.

Promising. It's clear that a lot of the backgrounds in this show are simply photographs run through a filter, but there's some really great lighting, perspective, and framing to make up for it. So far, (and granted I haven't watched Rozen Maiden) it has on average the most arresting visuals of the season:

There's not much in the way of narrative as this episode primarily functioned to introduce a few characters and establish their relationships with each other, but the characters are relatively likable and grounded given their fantastical natures. It's all very pleasant, surprisingly thoughtful, with an unmistakable spark of wit in the dialogue and how the characters play off of each other. Magical realism is typically underutilized or used in the confines of shitty LN tropes in anime and this is an incredible breath of fresh air relative to a lot of other stuff, even after one episode.

Who is responsible for the backgrounds on this anime. Some of them look very nice.

First episode was rather confusing. Bunch of names thrown around, random events mentioned, some backstory here and there. Not sure what to expect or what the show will be about, but it was very weird and I like that.

I'll add more later. Big thanks to AnimeGAF for the reviews.

It's also worth mentioning this is an adaptation of a novel by Tomihiko Morimi. The same guy that wrote the Tatami Galaxy novel.

Yasaburou is a great lead, though the transformation chosen is a bit baffling. I also like his older and younger brothers there, who ought to get more screentime hopefully
well the younger one it seems based on the preview
.

There was something refreshing and enjoyable about this even if I think it felt a bit on the slower side of things. Beauty of the blossoms and tree scene was the most memorable.

Looking forward to more and the ED song/ost music is above average for anime this season.

I thought the first episode was great. I mean I still have no idea what this is going to be about, but it seems interesting. The show also just looks great. Apparently PA Works finally figured out the importance of nice backgrounds and good colour design.

Just finished watching the first first episode and I have to say it is a well animated show (especially the background art) with a great story so far, it kind of feels like an anime from the early 2000s.

So far, the most interesting beginning of the new season. I don't follow the news anymore so I didn't heard about this series beforehand, and I watched it expecting some kind of series about space pirates (my japanese is... not very good ;p ), but I'm really pleasantly surprised.

It's also worth mentioning this is an adaptation of a novel by Tomihiko Morimi. The same guy that wrote the Tatami Galaxy novel.

Doesn't come as a surprise, really. The OP has a lot of TG vibes.
Even the prologue where you see the couples being separated by the cyclist made me think of a possible graphical reference to the role of the protagonist and Ozu as dark cupidons (maybe a little far-reaching, thought, as I don't see how it'd relevant to the plot).

Episode 1

Finally decided to check the show out. Mostly due the screenshots being posted in the anime thread. :P

This is definitely totally different from all the other stuff the studio has previously done. Pretty refreshing and unique visually. The setting and characters seem pretty interesting even though it's rather weird and random. I really like the direction, which has some really nice dynamic camera touches. There's nice flow with the characters too, even though the designs are bit flat and angular. The colors are pretty nice and overall the color aesthetic reminds me of Tsuritama a lot, probably because of the filtered backgrounds as well.

Looking forward to more.

Duckroll likes it people.

You should watch it.

Episode 1

This was a really strong first episode. It had a really good flow to it thanks to how interesting the characters are and the great chemistry between them all. There's some really nice animation in this and the backgrounds are absolutely superb. The character designs did take a little bit of getting use to at first but they work really well and you can definitely still see Kumeta's touch in them.

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing where this goes knowing it's based on a book by the same author of The Tatami Galaxy.

I really liked the script in episode 1. As in, the actual dialogue. It flowed extremely well and felt natural, something I rarely come across in anime. I remember having the same impression for Tatami Galaxy, so it's probably to the writer's credit, but it was staged and directed pretty well in the actual animation too.

Also, Toshiyuki Inoue is going to be the animation director of episode 3, lol. Can't wait to watch it!

Episode 2

The landscapes are so good painting quality, especially the ones during the scene with Yajiro in the well. Focused directly on the family made this a really good episode for me and way better than episode one, rather enjoyed everything that happened.

Episode 2

Pretty solid stuff once again. I'm impressed with the pace of the show. It's relaxed and leisurely, but there's always something wacky and silly going on. It really lets the audience soak in the crazy setting. I'm quite a fan of supernatural stuff taking place in modern society, so this definitely scratches an itch. It helps that the show is really living up to the title of "The Eccentric Family" because it's definitely the case. Everyone in this family is kinda crazy, and not even just by human standards. Lol. Glad I picked this show up. :D

Episode 2

D'awwww at the family.

Really impressed with this show. It does a simple thing of introducing the family yet still makes it an absolutely adorable and heartwarming story out of it.

Episode 2
Yeah, I really like this. A continued introduction of the family, except this episode had a bigger focus on getting to know more about the mother and the oldest brother, Yaichirou. I loved the mother's introduction and her overly dramatic, boyish personality. Also, I find it interesting how as tanuki, Yasaburo and his mother enjoy role-playing as different genders yet the other brothers seem to not want to bother with that at all. In Yajirou's case, he's become so comfortable with not turning into a human
that he's lost his ability to do it
. The dynamic between each of the family members felt natural and well done, and their personalities shined in their own quirky ways.

I almost didn't want this episode to end because I'm so eager to see more. It's been very enjoyable and mostly pleasing on the eyes all around.

episode one:

Quite a break away from the usual fare for the studio, and a good break at that, with some great lighting and colorwork. Most visually appealing show this season, for sure, and even my reservations about those weird snake-nostrils disappeared after a few minutes. I do wish the Kumeta designs were preserved a bit more, but they're distinct enough in moments of shock, I guess.

As for the episode proper, this was well-directed--some nice flourishes rounding out a good intro to this setting and the characters. I wonder how much of the dialogue is taken from the novel, because it has a similar feel and flow to the stuff that was in Tatami Galaxy. There's a nice cadence to it, in how the back-and-forth chatter has meaning beyond simple exposition and how the rhythm of conversation ebbs and flows according to the needs of the moment.

Basically, I really liked it. Good stuff.

Episode 2
Best show this season.

I quite like the characters, and it's nice that the series has enough breadth to let them expand and interact without trying to push a plot from the get go.

Will post my proper impressions of this show today. Overall: it's great so far and I'm glad I didn't end up overlooking it. Has the potential to be the show of the season and one of my favorites of the year.

Episode 2

This was a really nice insight into the rest of the family and the fairly
morbid way their father died. Fuck those Friday Fellows guys.
The showdown between the the eldest brother of the family and the two bullies was really clean and nicely animated, hopefully the rest of the series can keep up that level of quality.

Still can't get over how messed up that hot pot is though…

Episode 3

This show is the real deal. This episode would probably be what most people consider a "filler" episode of sorts. The entire episode revolves around a single task which seems to merely be a setup for the main events in the next episode, but yet it was handled with enough care to not feel like an extraneous event or a chore to sit through. The visuals definitely drive the episode this week, making several otherwise mundane scenes more interesting and lively.

As usual the layouts and backgrounds are extremely pleasant to look at, and create a strong impression, but there are some really nice animation touches this week too, thanks to the contributions of legendary animator Toshiyuki Inoue. We might not be talking about animation and detail on the level of Denno Coil, but there's definitely an extra level of polish in terms of some of the subtle character animations, as well as some very nice effects animation work in the latter half of the episode. I think it's best for people to see those scenes for themselves while watching the show, so they're not going to be part of the screencaps.

One other thing which really stood out for me this week though, is the crowd and background character art/animation. Some really nice moments. Let me illustrate.

I think these two examples from early in the episode speak for themselves. There's a large number of characters in the scene, but they don't look generic or copied and pasted. They're also naturally part of the scene doing their own thing. The fact that most of both scenes are actually animated is a huge bonus.

For this example though, I think some additional explanation is in order. What impresses me is the effort put towards something most people might not notice directly, but definitely gives a huge lift to the scenes. Note the characters in the background for both scenes. Even in the one where they are barely silhouettes. They're designed to add to the feeling that there are people living and going about their lives in the city, and they're ALL moving. It's pretty surprising to me because often it would make sense to just leave them as static parts of the background when they're not related at all to the scene.

In the second screenshot in particular, I felt it added a lot to the scene because the conversation between the two characters didn't involve a lot of movement or expression, so the viewer might naturally start to focus on the background instead, and notice that there are people walking around there, and it just makes everything feel more realistic and comforting.

----

tl;dr: The show still rocks, if you're not watching this you probably smell. :)

Episode 03

Still majorly impressed with this. I really like all the little tibits of the world they casually mention and how it just leaves me with wanting to know more about all of this.

Also the scenery just looked amazing.

I didn't know this show had its own OT (surprising, considering that Monogatari doesn't even have one). This is my favorite original anime of the season so far. Everything from the animation to the characters and the background music/art is fantastic.

I'm shipping him and Benten; His Tanuki fiancee be damned.

I really like this show.. but I feel like I'm missing out on a lot by not being familiar with Japanese folklore and mythology

I get the basics of Tengu flying/controlling the weather somewhat, and Tanuki shapeshifting. Beyond that, I'm sure there are things that people more versed would pick up on that we won't.

Started getting back into anime recently, this is the best new series since Tsuritama.
I love the atmosphere of the latest episode, the animation & backgrounds are truly stunning.

I like how the episodes move at a nice pace so that you never feel bored, like i find happens with some anime personally..

Easily the best show this season and based on the first 3 episodes probably going to be my top pick for the year.
