RIP Uchouten Kazoku we will not see your like again.

Finale

My fears about the backstory being left alone were warranted, but it was a nice episode. The conclusion had a little less...mm...
tension
than I'd have preferred. The second the
walls came down, all tension was gone and the whole thing was over. We speculated that Jurojin had a trick up his sleeve but...nope...nothing. He didn't turn into a tengu suddenly and fight Sensei, or really do anything at all. That was a pretty big disappointment. He was kind of built up as the guy behind the scenes and that didn't lead to anything. Sensei going on a rampage was pretty funny though, especially considering that he used the fan; without which he seems to be powerless.

Benten remains a
mystery woman, with her motivations left unexplored. My Yasaten shipping got a little harder without some revelation about why she...you know...joined the Friday Fellows, ate his Dad, etc. I guess it's nice that she's not ignoring Sensei anymore, and she did save their lives I guess so....mm...

Oh well. It was still a great series/the best show airing this season.

Yeah, I enjoyed the finale quite a bit, but I was surprised at how comedic and light-hearted it was. I had already given up on the back-story and Benten being given any real explanation, so the lack of revelations on that front was not a surprise.

The flaw with characters like Benten is that once you understand who they are, they lose their mystique. Rarely would their backstory and motivations actually live up to your expectations, simply because such people don't exist in real life.

To me an ending like that wouldn't have really gelled with the philosophy of the show, which was sold really hard in the last episode. I'm not looking for some
big fight or bang
to finish the series off. For me the greatest victories were just how the characters had developed and grown since the start of the show, and I felt that the finale did an excellent job of showcasing just that.

I think similarly this is why I had no interest in learning more about
Benten's past or intentions. I don't really think there is much mystery there if you just see her as someone who does whatever interests her most and often acts at the spur of the moment.

It would be easier to swallow considering the fantasy setting. I just hope the next book is Benten heavy.

It was just a bit too easy for me. Instead of them going to
the same restaurant as a plot, it was just a coincidence.
Things like that. For me, you can't setup a villain and then
have that villain do absolutely nothing. He briefly acted like he'd try to keep the tanuki from being taken, but then we never saw him again.

Episode 13

Rather liked the ending.

It was pretty fun and brought back the light heartness from earlier back.

Going on a rampage with the fan was one of the most fun moments I have ever seen.

Really don't mind too much about Benten still being a complete mystery and it was pretty fitting for everything to kinda go back to its normal way.

Still one of my favorite shows this season.

13 - [end]

A show that was so obsessed with the fate of tanuki being boiled in hotpots ending with a hotpot of the entire cast being tossed together was pretty amusing.

The show lost some of its allure as it transitioned into the storyline of the brothers, but ultimately, I think it did well, capping off their characters in a satisfying fashion, and bringing together the disparate strands developed throughout the episodes into a nice conclusion. I wish it hadn't been so light-hearted near the end, but that sort of optimism is appreciated, too. The tanuki themselves move on, even if the viewer can't.

And you know, for such a consistently nice looking show, the detail that stuck out at me the most in this episode was just having the pedestrians move in and out of the frame, in the background, each individual animated - it's the sort of attention and care that's nice to see.

---

I wonder how many people died when the Professor went on his rampage with the fan. That was a lot of cars and people being tossed around.

Quite enjoyed the finale.
The standoff at the Nise-emon ellection/Friday fellows meeting was a lot of fun, as was Akadama-sensei's jealousy fueled rampage
. Not surprised that Benten's back story was not delved into further, and as some have noted her character would probably lose a lot of the charm if too much information was given. Jurojin was a bit of a disappointment though;
his role in the final episode was basically sitting around and yelling at a big tiger to shut up (which is kinda awesome)
.

Overall this was easily the show of the season for me. I love how it ended with this lighthearted tone, which I think in the end defined the whole show despite some darker themes explored through the series.

Hopefully we will get an anime adaption of the sequel novel in 5+ years :P

Guess I'll repost:

So, this episode was really weird because I honestly didn't expect all that ramp up to lead to what is essentially a
farce climax
. In a way, it fits perfectly with what they've been saying about the Shimagamo family in particular at the end of every episode, in terms of how things always go for them, so maybe I shouldn't be surprised.

Given my earlier statement of Skyler-esque hatred for Benten, I'm not quite sure how I feel about how the show resolved her story either. Essentially,
she was just waiting for Akadama to basically come back to being his old self in order to have a place to go back to again
, which... I guess is fine? I dunno, I feel like she's as culpable as the Ebisugawas and nothing really happens to her.

How everything wraps up is also kind of weird as well, in as much as
almost nothing really changes... other than with the remnants of the last generation gone, with Soun essentially on a "permanent trip", there's this idea that life just moves on. Presumably the Friday Fellows will eat one of them again, and there may be another feud between the families, but that's just how it is.

Ending with Yasaburo essentially just asking for
good things to happen to everyone just points to that forward-looking ending, I suppose. Rather than linger on the past, we get a cut to some future where everyone is celebrating at the temple and just move on. Hell, even the human dude who loves to eat just shrugs his shoulders and is okay with not being in the Friday Fellows anymore.

I think I'll probably need some time to actually think about how I feel about the series as a whole. In a way, I should have known that the metaplot
wasn't going to be the important or even the central aspect of the show
, and trying to frame the series in that context probably changes how I feel about it - especially the last four or so episodes.

Really enjoyed the show, one of my favorites of the summer season. Has anyone read the novel, and if so did the anime cover all the material? Either way, I think that was a good spot to end it.

What a nice ending. Really good layouts all throughout, and above average animation for the show. Inoue wasn't there this time but the whirlwinds blowing things up were really well-done!

It was fitting how the first thematic dialogue of the series comes back, in the episode where the balance of the three 'groups' is thrown into chaos as they come together in one place. Benten, being one in touch with all three, was really the only one to stop Akadama's rampage. I still think they could have devoted a bit more time to her character, but here she played her role flawlessly.

This was without a doubt the best show of the Summer season. Visually striking, evocative and quirky with well-realized characters. There isn't much anime like this and I'm glad it turned out really well. They really should adapt more Morimi novels.

Episode 13 (End)

Really amazing series. I'm going to miss it a lot. The climax was in many ways not quite what I expected, but not in a bad way at all. While what I wanted to see was more of a focus on the mysterious and magical aspects of the series, what they ended the show with was instead a strong testimonial on the true nature of tanuki in myth and in the context of the show - they are whimsical beings who have little regard for their own wellbeing or future but instead take things day to day and mostly just want to have fun and coexist in the world as it constantly changes because of human society.

The art, animation, and direction in this series is definitely a landmark for PA Works as a studio, and I hope that this isn't a one off. It'll be great to see them build on this and release other shows of similar quality in future. It's not going to easy considering their reputation, but at least they have something to be truly proud of for once. :)
