Super Mario 64 speedrunner "Suigi" claims all 5 major categories in what's being dubbed "the greatest speedrunning achievement of all time".

Explaining that smashing the five categories' records for first place "seemed completely impossible a few years ago," Summoning Salt details why it's so mind-boggling: "The five categories are 120 star, 70 star, 16 star, 1 star, and 0 star. They require very different skill sets - the shorter ones are only 6-7 minutes long, while the longest is over 1 hour 30 minutes. Being able to hold all 5 despite heavy competition is unbelievable."
Not only does Suigi now hold the five records, "but he holds most by a huge margin." For reference, his time in the 16-star category, one that Summoning Salt dubs "the most popular category in all of speedrunning," still leads over a year later by six seconds. "He's the best player in the game's history by far," declares the YouTuber, stating that Suigi is "a definite candidate for the greatest speedrunner of all time."

I don't follow speedrunning much anymore, but that's a major achievement for a game that came out in 1996 and has had many attempts on various records.

That's impressive. I managed to do a 0 star run and found I was still WAY off from top 15. This is really impressive. How long until a bunch of youtubers try to prove he cheated somehow?

We're probably gonna get a youtube video in 3 years talking about how he was caught using assistance lol

Just imagine if he'd put all those thousands of hours in becoming a pianist, learning a new language or anything else that's useful in later life. Dedicating your life to speed running is wasting your life.

I don’t get the premise of speed running games. How is that even remotely enjoyable. I prefer to not be stressed about a videogame.

I'll never understand speedrunning lol, what a boring waste of time
It took only 8 post !!! Why are you in the thread if you are not interested?

In any case there is something cathartic to get better and better at something that sometimes clicks, the speed run is not something I'd spend time on but I spent too many hours in Nioh 2 for example trying to become perfect, I assume is something similar.

There are also persons that prefer to spend their time getting better at their job for example, I will never understand that (if it is not your dream job) but everyone is free to do what they want.

Also watching those runs is kinda entertaining for me

This is a momentous achievement. Bit surprised at the reaction here, I think a lot of folk don't understand what it takes to pull this off, the amount of dedication and skill is insane. It should be celebrated, not berated - Especially here on a gaming enthusiast forum.

His 16-star run is essentially flawless. It will never be broken, unless new crazy shit gets found.

On one hand, he's doing what he enjoys. On the other hand, I feel sad for a person putting this much into one game when there are a lot of experiences to discover out there.

The same argument could be made about competitive sports.
Buy one game.
Make major savings.
Use them for hookers and blow.

Who’s laughing now?
For Suigi, speedrunning may actually be a way of building generational wealth. I have no idea how much he is making, though.

Who's to say he's not also disillusioned with his own life and considers it to have been a waste of time? It's possible to hold an opinion on a subject that is not flattering on oneself, is this a foreign concept to you?

Dude could have finished 1000 different games but instead chose to finish 10 000 times the same old game to earn nothing else than a stupid record.

Making up that he's bitter about his life isn't a defence. Don't take out your insecurities on others, is this a foreign concept to you?

Having been an active member of this board for a long time doesn’t make his point invalid.

It's all about e-penis, now there will be sites talking about that achievement and videos done in YouTube.

I don't like speedrunning per se, wouldn't practice it myself, however I like the investigation done to get to a successful speedrunning. The whole debugging the game, finding a glitch, then testing it with a TAS and practicing it to get it done is somewhat appealing. Also the software used (like LiveSplit) is kind of interesting, submitted a few pull requests back in the day.

I would guess that about 100% of speedrunners are somewhere on the autism scale.

If you're not on the autism scale, it won't make any sense at all.

Can’t wait. Summoning Salt is the best content on YouTube no contest.

This achievement is bonkers btw. However I still think the Super Mario Bros. World record is the king of speed running achievements.

The entire recreational activity of gaming is absolutely worthless by his logic, and yet he's making that point on an enthusiast gaming forum.

Suigi probably gets paid at least something for his streaming, so it's actually more valid than anything any of us do with our time just because it entertains us.

If you think his point is something to be defended you probably shouldn't be on a forum at all. You should be off learning piano.

I didn’t say his point is something to be defended, I objected to your point that his being on this forum invalidates it.

Suigi certainly makes money from speedrunning, and the sense of flow and accomplishment must be deeply personally fulfilling, as well as for many other people — so it’s not meaningless in that sense.

It IS meaningless in the sense that sports are meaningless, not advancing humanity or our understanding of the universe.

I’m an excellent pianist, btw.

Suigi is the eldest and weathiest of the Mario Brothers. He is the most adept lawer the Mushroom Kingdom has ever seen and also the most hated for his offensive malpractice.

That’s crazy. I thought M64 speed runs were finished. There was a bunch of people going for it like 10 years ago.

What the fuck is with all these pathetic comments?
If you have a shitty life friend, doesn't mean the others have one as well. Some of us find room in our lives for speed-running and a fucking piano, and a job.

I mean, if you are just a lazy fucker, keep it to yourself, or better yet, do something about it. The fuck.

I didn't need to invalidate it, it was never valid. The context surrounding the post made it even worse - hence the glass houses post.

You keep taking this in circles when I've explained this multiple times now, making this a far bigger waste of time than any speed run ever could be.

Frankly I'm a bit surprised that people on a gaming enthusiast forum are this against people actually playing games.

I get that speedrunning isn't for everyone, hell I used to not get the appeal either, but this is similar to the 'gaming' version of Ohtani's records for homeruns/stolen bases/strikeouts in baseball. If you don't appreciate the skill/dedication to the game, that's fine, but some people in here are just intent on showing their asses and I can't figure out the reason? To look cool?

Man GAF can be such a downer sometimes.

Mario 64 is one of these games that'll probably still be played 20 years from now if the world still exists, like Melee or Super Metroid. Insane mechanical depth and virtually limitless skill ceiling.
