Super "NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread" II TURBO

So these are the two sticks I've been working on. These were Dreamcast Agetec sticks I bought on ebay ages ago and that I decided to mod.

It's a full mod as in there's only the case that remains original, and still with plenty of changes, inside and outside. The start button hole was filled and the boxes obviously repainted. Two more holes were created on the back to house two 24mm buttons. The VMU window was cut off and the top of the stick replaced with custom artwork and plexi. Both the stick and buttons are sanwa, the PCB is a PC compatible cthulu board.

FWIW, last time Fry's ran this promo, I ordered one any they shipped it to me without putting it in a shipping box. Just showed up at my door with a shipping label slapped on the Hori box. It might not bother some, but it annoyed me big time. Hori packaging is on the flimsy side, with just egg carton holders on each side and a fairly thin box. It wasn't even that big of a box. Mine came beat the hell up as a result. The stick was OK, fortunately, but the principle bothered me. If the box gets hit in the wrong spot, it could damage the lever. That happened with a 360 Hori stick I bought from Amazon once, and it even came in an Amazon box.

Should I pick up the Hori stick for my little bro & mod the buttons? I've been needing to get him into Street Fighter for a while.

How is the HRAP4? I've only used the Madcatz sticks and I like them, but I need something that will work for PS4 and this sounds like a great deal.
It's a fine stick. The buttons/stick are a bit different but they are solid, especially at that price.

If he's never played SF or used a stick before why would you need to swap the buttons?

for people mostly unfamiliar with sticks i figure just let them use the default stuff and see what they think of it. no point in forcing someone to use certain stuff because they are the "right" parts.

unless they are madcatz parts, those are trash

So get him the stick, but let him mess around with the default parts first. If he wants Sanwa parts, get them for him. Am I interpreting that correctly?

i think its the safe bet, he could end up being addicted to hori parts! unlikely but possible lol.

however the ps4 hrap is sold out online already so unless you have a fry's nearby you may be out of luck.

There actually is a Fry's in my area, so I could check there. Plus there's a game store that sells Hori sticks nearby.

nice, yeah might as well jump on the $99 deal. even if he hates the stick you can keep it or sell it for what you paid for it, if not more heh

After a couple of setbacks due to the holidays and rent I'm gonna finally order my HRAP4 today, that and pick up a copy of Xrd to fiddle around with until SFV

did you get those plexis from art's hobbies? I had actually considered doing this but i really like the feel of the metal plate originally on the agetec vs plexi. here's mine

I guess. Worst-case scenario, the TE2 can be my tournament stick while the Hori can serve as my training stick (once I swap the buttons, of course....if my little bro hates the stick).

Ah that's a very elegant mod. Yeah I got the plexis there and honestly they don't feel better than the original metal plate, if you are happy now I wouldn't change a thing.

So.

I'm looking at sticks.

I've been leaning Hori RAP4 for ps4 because I've always been a Hori fan and it's cheaper than TE's.

But I also want to customize my stick and most customized sticks I see are TE's.

I want my stick to be the cutest stick in the room.

Customization is important. What do I do?

You want to paint the stick shell as well as change the art?

Yes. How do I do that? Is that too hard?

For paint:
I've painted only two joysticks with Krylon Fusion for Plastic spray paint: http://www.krylon.com/products/fusion-for-plastic/ along with the krylon can gun:http://beachpackagingdesign.com/wp-content/uploads/boxvox/6a00e54f0014bd88340148c6986142970c.jpg .

Gutted the sticks out and did about 3 layers of krylon paint. Each layer of paint was added about 3 to 4 hours apart.

I did 2 layers of "Krylon Fusion for Plastic" priming at the end. Each layer of priming was 2 hours apart.

This is was end result:

For the stick art:
Use photoshop and use a template of the stick you want to new art for. Make the stick art. Go to a website that prints out the stick with all the holes cut out like: http://tek-innovations.com/arthobbies/. They do prints for HORI RAP V4: http://tek-innovations.com/arthobbies/?loc=products&cat=16

You'll might want to get the plexiglass to cover the stick-art all well.

Yes. How do I do that? Is that too hard?

I've painted my share of plastic pieces so I figured I'd share how I've always done it....

1. Scuff and clean the plastic with a green Scotch Brite pad and a detergent of some type (dish soap/Ajax/Simple Green)
1.5. Rinse
2. Clean with prep spray or denatured alcohol (not always necessary but only helps adhesion)
3. Duplicolor adhesion promoter (mild solvent primer)
4. Sem vinyl/plastic coating/dye/paint (Duplicolor and many others make their own)
5. Satin or matte clear coat

This is what I do when I paint plastic so that it looks like plastic. You can follow other instructions out there that involve priming, various grits of sandpaper and buffing in order to achieve a mirror like shine, but I like the factory sheen and texture.

...or you can just wipe it down and spray it with Krylon Fusion.

What's the plexiglass and what's it for? This will be my first stick.

It's a thin shit of plexiglass that covers the art. I think the website tek-innovations still sells most of what you need as far as the art goes. For buttons and the stick try Arcade Shock or Focus Attack.

Those HRAPs all look a lot better with art.

I wish Tek-innovations would get the Type-N panel layout. I want to put some art in my new TE2 and get a better plexi.

I've decided to go with a TES+. I like the simple look, and it doesn't look heavy, and I really thing its shape is the cutest. I'm also far too used to Mad Catz's Sanwa buttons to switch.

This will be my first stick, and I detailed how I want to customize it in the FGC thread. I should make a sketch rough in photoshop!

I'm thinking of painting the shell pink and have the background of the art white for contrast. In terms of actual art...I'd like to draw cute chibi characters of my favorite fighting game characters.

I want a white ball on the stick and I want a pink swirl around the circumference of the ball, like the dreamcast logo. Is replacing the ball easy? Can you have people customize the ball or do you paint it yourself like you would the shell?

Eventually, I'd like to put in white buttons.

Yeah that sounds like a rad stick.

:)

Thanks everyone for the help!

The ball question would really be helpful, because I'd like to design the look of the ball and send it to a place where they can do it, but I'm not sure anyone does that.

So this stick, which I cherish, has been super stiff/not smooth for a while. I decided to be brave and take it apart today after looking up "sanwa lubrication" (even if this is not one) and used Chapstick of all things to grease up the pivot. Feels good as new!!! I was hitting DM's I was missing in Last Blade 2 like nothing. This pretty much made my night. I thought it was on its last legs.

Can you remove the pexiglass and clean it?

Those are so hot. I want that MVS stick, gaddayaum!

I use Permatex Ultra Caliper Lube on my sticks and RC car plastic gears. Totally safe and effective.

Yeah, I was impatient and just wanted to do it quick and dirty, thus the chapstick. From now on, will definitely use something like this. I have a PS2 HRAP that will need it soon.

Jesus, that Neo Geo one is pure sex.

Realized I had 6 sticks in my house because my friends don't like taking their sticks back home and we usually get together at my house anyways so things just sort of get left here. So why not take some bad pics of them and throw them up on neogaf!

My first stick a SFIV SE. My friend bought it for me a long ago as I was playing in SF4 at the time, so thanks Erik. I switched all the buttons and stick to Sanwa. I ripped off the art and just painted over it. Paint is chipping now so it's not the best looking now but it's got that sentimental value.

My friend bought another SFIV SE stick for my other friend and he didn't alter it much
The stick is unmodded and the ball top is a heavy metal one. The balltop makes it to heavy so if you hit down and let go it'll go up and make you jump. Looks really cool but that's a big no haha. The 2 black buttons are original and the white ones are Sanwa.

I have no idea where the metal under plate is if anyone knows where I can get a replacement or an idea to cover it that'd be great.

Another friend saw us using our sticks and liking them and then went out and bought his own. It's an octogate and has some serious shitty buttons. He'll never switch out of pure stubbornness after we laughed at it. For being a super cheap stick it's lasted all this time. Personally I like the FeiRyu/RyuLong art.

This is a Tekken Hybrid Namco Arcade Stick #0654 out of 1000. Got it from Namcos online store during Black Friday. Got it the stick and 2 games for $60 bucks. Only switched the black balltop to white. My most used stick as it works on PC as well.

A friends Qanba Q4RAF, nothing changed but being the only stick we have to play on a 360 makes it popular whenever we go to a local meetup.

This is my latest pickup during that Amazon sale a couple weeks ago. I'm now ready for SFV in 39 days. Only changed the buttons to some white/grey Sanwas. I like the stick lever as is. The tek innovations plexi and art cut out is super tempting so now I just need an idea for artwork.

Got the Hori Gamecube stick. It's awesome. Doesn't hurt that I got it in great condition. The joystick is awesome, it feels kind of like a Seimitsu and the buttons feel in between Seimitsu and ASCII buttons (ASCII shape but not terrible creaky shit, feel like softer Sei buttons)

I'm continuing my search online but besides playing with the stick on your lap does anyone have a recommendation for a proper table/desk/stand? I tend to play better when the stick is supported and even resorted to using a tv table tray/stand.

Thanks for your support. I think you'll be pleased with the finished product! :D

I pre-ordered a TE2+ on Amazon a while ago but now instead of saying "Available Feb 16th" on the product page they are showing as "Currently Unavailable". I assume they'll be back up in February yeah? :]

Has Mad Catz said if they are going to ship the new sticks before the 16th so they will arrive in time to be able to play the game on day one? It would suck to have to wait.

Man, Jasen's first gen panzer stick looked sooooo good. I regret not buying a case and storing it for PS4 when I had the chance.

The second gen case is too expensive and I don't see why there was a HUGE bump in price.

I think it's due to the bigger size and how it's setup, but yea the price increase is just does not seem feasible
