Welp for some stupid reason I decided to get a copy of SRW UX. Now I sure hope it doesn't turn out to be as bad as everyone expects it to be.

Going to do the same as soon as I get my jp 3ds. Hopefully customs won't get their dirty hands on it...
I have been missing Dunbine so much. From the look of it, the re-enactment is going to be along the lines of K's Dangaioo: only one enemy for the entire length of the game. But it's still Dunbine...

Dunbine will be cool. As will be Rean. I don't remember Rean much but I remember it being totally crazy Tomino destroy everything in Dunbine form, which should be fun to play out. Plus dude's named Aesop and that is a cool name.

I think my only complaint about UX pre-release is I was really hoping when they did Gundam OO in budget version form they'd do it like how they did Gaogaigar in W and do OO S1->S2->Movie all in one continuous game plotline.

It was fun playing out OO S1/S2 in Z2.1 & Z2.2 but stretching it out over 150+ maps kinda killed the pacing. Would be fun to play a game that breezed through the whole OO plot along with all the upgrades. Start with Exia, end up with Quan[T].

I would say maybe the next 3DS game, but I have this strong feeling the next 3DS game will be a spiritual sequel to UX and keep a lot of the same series like W-> K-> L did.

I just watched the 3D version of the PV that was shown during last week's Nintendo direct and... as one could expect from a 2D game, it's really useless.

After 2 months of playing 2ndOG , I finally finished it. It actually had 2 stage that was hard to obtain SR (had to try twice)... The last stage (true end) also felt harder than normal SRW games.... Now... wait for UX

I'm playing through W again (I wish it had been translated). I'm kinda sad that some of the songs that were in J aren't in W. Namely the Aestivalis Battle theme and Gundam SEED's Realize.

Every time I hear that song I think of those levels where I'd sit there, crying as I tried to get to the other end of the map with the Freedom Meteor and stop those dang nukes. Those nuke levels made a huge impression on me, man.

I've just finished Alpha Gaiden yesterday, it took me 3 months (-_-')
I love those games but I wouldn't mind if they cut out the filler and half the maps. Or just stop putting so many reinforcements in every map...

Anyway, despite this it has become my favorite for now (others I have played are 2, 3, F, F final, Ex and Alpha). Next in line: Alpha 2, but it will have to wait some time so that I can play something else.

Man, don't feel bad about the 3 months. It took me a half year to get through SRW Z, 2-3 months for OGs, FIVE YEARS for OGGaiden (mainly because it was shelved for 4.8 of them), and I've been playing 2nd OGs for a month+ now and am only about halfway through all the maps. Heck, I still haven't finished Alpha 3 and I started playing it after Z2 Hakai-hen. Have about 20 maps left to finish in it at some point. If you work or go to school full time & have a life, it's hard to get through more than a couple of maps a night since they usually take an hour+ when including the pre-map cutscenes and post-map cutscenes.

I agree full heartedly that they need to cut the damn bloat from the main games. There are usually a bunch of filler maps and the grunt waves can be too many. Squads make it even worse (@3 takes foreeeeever at some parts). After some of the DS games and Z2, I actually think I prefer straight out 1 on 1 unit fighting. Z2 games moved at a pretty good pace outside some filler and grunt waves.

It's why I actually really enjoy the low budget SRW games despite everyone hating on them. They're usually 30-35 maps w/ a couple of short branches, almost no filler maps at all and the grunt waves tend to be lower. Instead of being 100-200 hour games, they're like 30-50 hours max. Much more manageable, better paced and quite fun. It's why I'm looking forward to UX (and will probably finish UX before 2nd OGs).

It's cool the way you're doing it though, going from oldest to newest. The jump to Alpha 2 visually should blow you away. It's much easier to go forward and see the continual improvements in speeding up the gameplay and improving the sprites vs going back to worse visuals and much slower gameplay. I started at W/OGs/Z and worked my way backwards to Alpha 2, but that was the max I could go back. I'd love to play Alpha & Alpha Gaiden for the great lineups, but I just can't stomach the gameplay speed. I've tried Alpha 1 over and over again and I never make it more than 8-10 maps in before dropping it.

I've tried Alpha 1 over and over again and I never make it more than 8-10 maps in before dropping it.
I went from Z2 to OG1/OG2, J, OGs and then Alpha 1. And I would have to say that alpha 1 is probably my favorite SRW game today. I was planning on doing a write up on it, should try to finish it this weekend.

Edit: Going to double post this, because I don't really want mush the together and try to edit them into something readable.

Alpha is probably one of the best entries in the series that I have played.

Mechanically the game is ancient, very little customization for units or pilots. New systems like skill points were introduced, so they weren’t as well integrated or designed as in the later series. Namely there is no indication that there are skill points or how to get them. I had to follow a guide to get any of them. usually it involved make a specific choice during during the conversations in between stages. And the only counter for how many points you earned is tucked away somewhere on the OG characters stat page. But it also had some neat things like original animated sprites for all the characters. Keeping a great uniform look, not beholden to the art styles of the original shows. Difficulty was almost nonexistent and due to lack of customization units started out as overpowered and broken or became that by the end of the game. Well being super easy was kind of part of the charm for me.

Because the best parts of the game were the setting, all the featured series, and the plot. The crash landing of what will be SDF Macross interrupts the One Year War which gets postponed for 7 years until a full out interstellar war breaks out. And this is just the start of it, the whole thing gets absolutely batshit crazy as it goes. The entirety of Universal Century is crammed into a single whole, so you have Uso Evin hanging out with Quattro Bajina and other insanity. But then it also managed to create some very interesting cross over events. For example, in the first episode of Evangelion as a final desperate measure the army attempts to take out the attacking angel with an N2 mine. The game changes that to the Londo Bell, the catch all organization for your entire giant robot army, being deployed to grind it into dust.

But the game also treats the plot of all the shows with a fair amount of respect and gravitas as well. What impressed me is that early on angels from Evangelion get an entire stage dedicated to each of them. And the game mechanics are structured in such a way that they are rather tough opponents to beat at the start of the game. The game goes to a great deal of effort to convey just how serious of threat they were in the original material. On the other hand the game also does a lot to cater to the fans. Such as letting you subvert almost every major plot point of Eva if you so choose. This leads to one of my most favorite events in all of SRW games. Namely Bright Noa in command of Reinforce Jr. taking down one of the angels, Israfel, with “Stand Up to the Victory” playing in the background. Yeah all of the themes were fixed for every unit and you couldn’t change them.

I can list a bunch more memorable moments, for me, from the game. But the essence of what I like about it is that it focuses on plot of the featured series and the things that made them interesting or fun. Almost every stage feels like it’s driving forward the story of one series or another, or progressing the plot of the game. It a really great, fun crossover for a bunch of classic robot shows. It's one of the few SRW games I played that really captures the feeling "Hell yeah! This is amazing!" you get from watching awesome giant robots punching things and lots of hot blooded yelling.

Ok, yeah, that makes me want an Alpha 1 remake even more.

I want to play Alpha 1. But the slow pace of taking turns and watching the enemy move and take turns is simply unbearable after a certain point.

All they need to do is port it to a handheld (ie, 3ds) and update the gameplay to move at modern SRW speeds and it would be awesome. No need to update the sprites or voices or anything else. Just speed up the gameplay and improve the UI and you'll have a fantastic SRW.

I want them to do that to Alpha 1 & Alpha Gaiden so bad. Would rather play those two over any of the other SRWs in my backlog, but I'm pretty impatient and I can't deal with their speeds.

I started Alpha the day after I finished F Final and it blew me away. The animation, the story, all the little improvements in interface and system and best of all, the possibility to skip the battle scenes. It's such a better game compared to the first series, apart from the difficulty. (Alpha Gaiden corrected that a little but once you get used to the support system, there's almost no challenge until maybe the last two maps on hard.)
It's too bad you can't play them, Bebpo, but I see your point. I think I could never replay the old Winkysoft games.

I'm actually tempted to start Alpha 2 now but I fear I'll get tired of it halfway so I'd better not.

I played my first Z2 campaign almost everyday for a year. I'm at 1.5 years for Z2-2. I only play during my commute though and I watch all animations and read everything so I guess that contributed to it.

Alpha is probably one of the best entries in the series that I have played.

Mx and W also have great screenplays. One of the most funny exchange I remember was Sai Saishi from G-Gundam having a fight with Asuka: she tells him all the G-Gundam mechs look ridiculous and Sai tells her Eva 02 is like a goldfish, with a string of poo always attached to its ass :)

I'm wondering when we should expect the next game, and what it would be. Not really expecting any Z3 or OG3 news until sometime next year...

Z series collection for Vita anyone ? :p

Gonna be a port of spinoff. I'd be really surprised if we see any legit SRW title after UX before 2014.

...unless they do an OGG/Z Special Disc style expansion for 2nd OGs for christmas. I wouldn't be surprised if they do. 50/50 chance I'd say.

I'm kind of bummed I'm only halfway through 2nd OGs now that UX is coming out (doing all routes simultaneously). At map 37/64 so now my choice is to stick with 2nd OGs for another month or two and finish it and then play UX late (problem is I'd rather play UX than 2nd OGs) or put OGs on hold in exactly the middle of the game, play UX and come back to it (problem with that choice is I'll probably forget what was going on in 2nd OGs when I get back to it). Arghh...first world import problems >_<

Some stores have already started selling it. So everything about the game is already out there, besides some extremely well hidden secrets. If there are any.

Ah, didn't know. Considering how I'm not getting this one (because I can't even bloody play it), I'm trying to avoid as much info as possible, because it would make me sad.

Screw the haters - at least UX is good enough to have playable units without turning them into "attacks" like what Z2 does. Z2 really ruined Z for me.

Is there an OT yet?

And surprised nobody posted them... the demo videos for the game are out, apparently.

EDIT: These may not be the game's Demo Videos? Unlike previous SRW Demo Vids, it doesnt just go through one mech per series, it repeats series several times in these vids. It could be just some guy who recorded some battle sequences.

It's just some footage the guy recorded from the early stages, not the Demos.

It looks nice enough. Still think I'll still wait for a price down though.

Since UX is out this week, time for the next SRW title announcement.

It usually is about time, March or April is usually one of the time frames they announce a new game. It would be great if it was another console game.

In any case, my predicitons. And these are just predictions I'm pulling out of my ass, so no need to question the validity, because, y'know... I'm pulling them out of my ass, and currently a little boozed up.

-X360 is definitely out of the running at this point.
-PS4 is probably out too, but would be a nice bit of luck for Sony if they had a SRW game when the system launches. Although since the system isn't even out yet, I doubt they'd risk releasing a SRW game on it so soon.
-Next Xbox, ehh... just a general feeling that most "mainly publish stuff in Japan" game companies are probably a little wary, backing anything MS until they actually get a decent audience. So probably not here either.
-PS3 is a good candidate, since they're already familiar with the box.
-WiiU, a possibility, but maybe not as high as the PS3. I'd up those chances if the WiiU was selling well over there, but it isn't really.
-3DS, I dunno, probably not? At least, not this upcoming announcement, maybe another announcement later this year. Nothing really to back it up, but I don't think they'd release back to back on the same system, they'd hop on to something else first.
-PSP, okay yeah, we know its starting to die out in Japan finally, but still has a chance to get another SRW game. Chances would increase if...
-Vita, they do a double release, where they release one version for the PSP and one for the Vita (like God Eater 2). Or just say that the PSP version works on the Vita outright. A Vita game by itself? I dunno, chances are probably about the same as the WiiU, honestly.

Other than that, probably another sprite one (non-3d models), but if on console, they'd be like OG 2nd in terms of what they could DO with the battle animations. If they put it on the WiiU though, I wonder if they'll just do another 3D one again, mainly because in general, ever since SRW has been on the PS1, if it has appeared on a different console (not handheld), it always seems to be 3D. Would be nice if they DON'T continue that tradition (I LIKE 2D SPRITES, DAMMIT).

Got my copy today (P-A is fast!)

Played 1 map, already like it better than 2nd OGs. Not that I dislike OGs, but there is so much wrong with OGs, especially 2nd OGs, and licensed SRW does things A LOT better in a lot of areas (pacing, story, repetition). I just did map38 last night in 2nd OGs and I am SO SICK of 90% of 2nd OGs hour long maps having no story besides some villain wanting to "test your party's strength" and then they run away. NOTHING HAPPENS IN 2ND OGS for 3/4ths of the maps. goddammit, so much bloat. I honestly like OGG better at this point. At 36 maps it was at least straight to the point and the story moved each map.

Anyhow...

Story presentation is really nice so far and the visual/audio package does feel a good step up from the DS games. It's below Z2 for sure, but not bad, not bad. Only complaint is the sprites are blurred a little to hid how low-res pixely they should be; which looks lame.

One thing that is AWESOME and is why I LOVE SRW is the first map starts with Destiny taking place in the same world as Fafner. Like the first ep of Fafner has Kagari/Athrun/Shinn on the island base helping out with the defenses since the island is under Orb or something. AND IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE SINCE EVERYONE LOOKS THE SAME :lol :lol

I could see a PS3/Vita co-release. You'd figure that with all the time and money spent on developing the PS3 engine, Bandai-Namco would want to use it for more than a single game.

They'll probably announce a 3d SRW just because those are cheap to make and it's been a while since Neo. For 3DS or PS3 or Vita or maybe all 3.

Either that or a port.

I've seen some praise for SRW Neo's mechanics, which was 3D and got away with being less grid-based, apparently, since the 3D environment let it use actual radial ranges - it would be interesting to see that with a less oddbal cast.

okay guys, been impressed with the trailers and see this is now in the japanese eshop to download.

For a non japanese speaker, will I still be able to enjoy this game? Is it playable with a walkthrough?

Will a walkthrough likely to be up on gamefaqs soon?

Not speaking any Japanese you'll miss out on most of the plot and cross over stuff. Depending on how familiar you are with the series. It's also not as pretty as the PS2 and PSP games, although some people are claiming that it looks better than expected. So your enjoyment of the game will probably depend directly on how you like the series that are featured in the game.

As for a walkthrough, you shouldn't expect too much. You should be able to find a write up of all the win/lose conditions in a couple of days as well as solutions to the puzzle maps. The menus and abilities shouldn't be too different from the previous games so you could look up translations for those for reference or ask some one who knows some japanese to help you out. But don't expect any script/dialog/plot translation. Some one here might give a brief run down of the plot but that's not guaranteed. With the 3DS being region locked, the community involvement for this game will be a lot lower than other installments.

Also still no OT because I am a horribly lazy person. Hopefully today?

Due to region lock, there won't be a lot of people playing UX and writing about it in English. You might be better off trying a SRW that already has a lot of translated information.

Ok, so the game sort of has innovative things like it has SPEED UP ANIMATION BUTTON (A) and is sort of has the Z2 skip animation button (Y).

The problem is Z2 did it perfectly by skipping to right before the attack either/hits or misses and then the next skip press went to the start of the other person's attack. In here, Y skips to the other person's attack, so you have to look down at the stats to see if your attack even connected or missed.

It's still sort of useful if you want to see the counter-attacking party but not the attacking party. But I don't see why they didn't do it like Z2 with multiple bookmarks per attack.

Other things...the pre-battle screen is waaaaay too busy. There's so many things/text on the screen it's hard to just see what attack is being used by both people and the hit %s. I mean it's kind of cool you get EVERY PIECE OF INFO YOU COULD EVER WANT pre-battle, but it just looks like a mess.

The map actually benefits a lot from the 3D. I'm not sure why the map sprites/backgrounds aren't as nice and detailed as Z2 (c'mon, it's a handful of paintings), it looks a lot like the DS maps BUT the 3d layering of making the units floating above the map is a cool effect and it definitely feels closer to Z2's maps than the DS games.

The 3D in combat is ok. Doesn't add a ton but I think the layering helps make the weaker DS sprites/animations have a little more "umph" than they otherwise would.

Music choices are great so far, but goddamn, sound quality is still pretty LQ compressed like the DS games and not console/CD-quality like Z2. Still voice acting MAKES IT SO MUCH BETTER. Love hearing the Festum "Anata wa soko ni imasu ka?" in the crazy robot announcer voice. It's definitely great for all these series that still are waiting for legit mainline SRW w/voice like Fafner and Linebarrels.

I like the originals so far. Like that there's a bunch of original mecha off the bat and it's not like 1 or 2 units and that's it.

Game speed is a little slow with animations off. Not bad slow, but doesn't move as fast as Z. The interface is just a lot slower and more cumbersome. Haven't played the DS ones for a while so not sure if it's the same speed.

Still kind of bummed this starts post-Gundam OO S2, and just covers the movie. There's not...much story in the movie. Yet we have the entire Macross 7 plot AGAIN (I am sick of M7; only entry I'm geniunely meh on in UX). At least with Destiny it starts post Destiny plot.

okay guys, been impressed with the trailers and see this is now in the japanese eshop to download.

These games are totally playable if you don't know Japanese, but you miss the plot. So...if you don't mind just playing an srpg with units from different anime series...go for it. Also if you've seen the shows included, you can generally follow along since it tends to follow their plotlines with various changes.

Mine won't get here for another week or 2,
Bought a bunch of game off amazon jp and had them shipped to a friend in JP, will do a massive shipment to the US tomorrow.

This is the reason I never got a US 3ds, all the game I would want to play would be in japanese anyways.

back to topic about UX.

The too much text worries me. I feel the stuff for 2nd OG is already too much some times with 4 of your units. Being slow is another thing i'd worry.... after a while you just want to get the stage over with and skip everything ;/

MacF stinks anyway. Need to put in Genesis Climber MOSPEADA or something else instead. >=O

I tried watching all of Mospeada after some vague childhood memories of those bikes turning into cool armor - holy rose-tinted glasses, that was kinda painful to watch at times...
the transformation looked a lot simler than I remembered them, the ending was unsatisfying (though the start was interesting), and Mint Rubble is one of the most annoying characters ever... I though I'd seen some flunk the Bechdel test, but holy damn...

Then again, if someone can make that work, it's SRW's writing staff...

I started playing SRW in the 5th grade when I didn't know a lick of Japanese. Its definitely accessible since 90% of the fun of SRW is in the battles. The story stuff is pretty dumb most of the time (since super robot shows have dumb stories most of the time) so you don't really miss much.

I play the games mainly for the stories ;_;

I mean the stories are the stories of the anime featured and if you like mecha anime stories....ya

I like the stories for the series I haven't seen because I can watch them in SRW and not have to actually watch the show (if I really like it in SRW, I'll watch the show after). And I like the stories I have seen because it's fun replaying your favorite mecha stories in game form as an SRPG. Each SRW game tends to be a mix of shows I've seen and shows I haven't so it's awesome getting both. Plus the OG stories can be really good like the over-arching Z storyline right now with the Zodiacs.

I'm very anti-OG so whenever the OG stuff comes up my eyes just glaze over. I understand the whole concept of SRW of course but the OG stuff just feels like crappy fanfiction.

Take Z2 for example, you have like world destroyers like Guren Lagann and the Gundams around but crappy Firebug units have such great stats that they can easily get beaten.

Of course the appeal of SRW is the fanservice and getting to watch how the SRW team twists everyone's stories to fit. I just never felt it was more important compared to the fun of watching them blow enemies up.
