Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

I liked last night's update! Any details Sakurai wants to share about the new mechanics to the game is fine by me.

Same here. Sounds like he's trying to shake up the gameplay a bit to offer something more refreshing. I just hope it isn't a sluggish mess like Brawl.

I actually loved Brawl but it was slow as hell.

I agree, I find these kind of updates (gameplay mechanics) far more interesting than most pics we get. I am really Excited for all the changes that have been announced so far. I think that you are still going to be able to use the jab combos (foxes kicks, kirby/falcon's punches) but when you end them it now ends with a finisher (evidenced by little mac still having his jab combo flourish) the only thing I wonder is if it is a user controlled amount of time for the flourish animation or a set amount of time?

It would be nice if you were able to control the duration because in some cases, like when your opponent is at lower percentages, you might want to keep them trapped for a little while longer before you finish the combo. Either way I am liking the change and this could help keep the pace up.

This might be going too far out but if you were able to control the direction of the final hit it could open even more options. In the Mac trailer he ends his jabs with an uppercut, iirc, but it is well known Mac is not an air fighter so maybe it's not always the best thing to do in every situation. If there was an option just to end with a decent forward jab and keep them closer to the ground Mac could have a better chance to continue pressuring the opponent.

Yeah, regular 3DS is pretty uncomfortable. :S
Also, your cramps might come from Castlevania, not the 3DS, cuz Mirrors of Fate is trash.

I havnt played MoF yet. I'm playing Dawn ;). I have a 2DS and its only slightly better than the 3DS. Still hurts after awhile.

You'll get another Pokemon Stadium with the same stage changing mechanics and like it.

I'll love a Pokefloats 2
I'd love to get a reveal of Pokemon Stadium with the stage changing mechanic now toggle-able. It's neat and all, but the basic layout of that stage is really good (better imo than Battlefield et al), and it's a shame to force that on it.

A new Pokefloats would be cool too. I actually think it would be pretty cool if they made tons of floats (each with semi-unique movement pattens) of different 'mons from all gens, and have different ones show up in random sequence.

I like today's update. Updates about gameplay mechanics are always interesting. And I was never really a fan of infinite jab combos for only certain characters, so this is a welcome change in my book.

EDIT: Also have a 3DS XL. Thing is so comfy to hold.

True master race are those with a battered old blue 3DS, still sporting the stock 2GB SD card, screen scratches and all!

Hey, food for thought:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the Dojo days of Brawl, weren't Ike, Diddy Kong and Pokémon Trainer all revealed in relatively quick succession?

And now here we are with Little Mac, Diddy Kong, and...

Sure would be nice to get Pokémon Trainer today, especially with it being Pokémon's 18th anniversary.

27th Feb also marks when the current flag of Japan was adopted as the national flag for merchant ships so clearly Sakurai is going to reveal the Japanese release date tomorrow!

For me, there was never any doubt that I'd be getting both on launch day.

If they both drop simultaneously, I'm totally dropping a pretty penny and getting both versions and three Wii U Pro Controllers (I already have one).

I loves me some Smash, and with Mega Man in this one, I'm more hyped than I've ever been for the new one.

And/or the Merchant from RE4 as a third-party newcomer!

(Coincides perfectly with RE4 Ultimate HD PC!)

Pretty much this. Can't freaking wait.

3DS XL master race here.

Same here, but I'm tempted to pick up 2DS just only for SSB3DS because I don't want to wore out my special edition 3DS.

*Long list*

Interesting how Yoshi was one of the first 15 revealed for both Melee and Brawl and both were in the first year of reveals and yet here we are w/o the loveable green dinosaur/extra jump

Kind of a non-sequitor, but with this game I hope the that every track isn't exclusively tied to the franchise/stage. Rawk Hawk's battle theme from Paper Mario TTYD would be perfect for the Boxing Ring stage for example.

Here's a fun question.

We all spend so much time talking about how we'll be upset if certain characters do or do not make it in, but what about the given characters that we all take for granted?

We take them for granted because they're core Nintendo characters and they've been in every Smash game to date, but what if -- for some weird reason or in some bizarro parallel universe -- Smash Wii U and 3DS came out but Sakurai left out Mario, Link, Kirby, Samus, Yoshi, Fox, Luigi, or Pikachu?

Would you be upset if one or some of those characters didn't return as playable? Obviously this would never happen, but we all take them for granted for that reason and it's a fun "what-if" scenario to consider.

Well considering that Yoshi still has not been announced yet...
I think he'll be announced alongside Yoshi's New Island, if not then I panic

Well, You might notice that Yoshi is ALWAYS to be N64 character to be confirmed on Starter Roster.

For Melee, Ness and Cap Falcon were confirmed to be starter character way before Yoshi was.

you should put in bold the newcomers for each game :P

Actually that's good idea.

Meh, it is weird that Sakurai has waited so long to reveal him, but I can't imagine there's any way Yoshi will be cut. I mean, it's Yoshi! One of the original eight! No way he'd be left out.

There would be bloodshed like no other. I don't know if you were around for "no Megaman in Marvel vs. Capcom 3", but I imagine it'd be like that amplified to an exponential degree. Personally, I'll always be good if some combination of Luigi & Fox along with "extended mainstays" [re: people that are the closest to being N64 like vets despite coming later] like Pit & Marth still existed.

The picture of the day today is interesting. I find that most of the infinite jab combos are just asking for trouble if your opponent is capable of decent SDI. This is actually really nice news that you can "finish" it.

Also, I suppose it means that a lot of the cast now have a new move?

I would be incredibly upset. Smash Bros., for me, is not just a great game, but also a celebration of Nintendo history. Not seeing iconic characters like those would be very, very weird.
