Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Can somebody more informed than me start giving arguments for Snake's return? He's my main in Brawl and this cynicism is starting to worry me

Mario used F.L.U.D.D. literally once in his entire lifetime, and it's being represented in Smash as a primary move?

Why? Seriously.

I'm actually cool with him using F.L.U.D.D

What I dislike is that he's still using the stupid Spray Nozzle and not the awesome Rocket Nozzle as a new recovery/uppercut.

BTW, I just had a thought - why the hell are there absolutely no references to Eternal Darkness in the series? Melee OK, I understand, but Brawl? Brawl had a ton of trophies and then another few tons of stickers yet nothing, the game is not mentioned at all, nowhere throughout the whole thing. I mean, Nintendo owns all the rights to ED, right? I finally got around to playing the game after so long, I finished it today and thought how cool it would be to at least get a Pious Augustus trophy in SSB4. It's a freakishly great design, I loved it and he instantly became one of my fav villains ever. I'd love for the game to be represented in at least some way in SSB4.
I don't really think that anyone at Nintendo gives two shits about that game, which is a shame because Alexandra Roivas would be an awesome addition to the roster.

I don't think Shulk's that out there. Lucas is from a JRPG that never released outside of Japan for one :P
We will see. Shulk definitely has more chances than Takamaru, I would say, but still.

Anyway, Mother 3 is very popular on Japan, isn't? How is Xenoblade in terms of popularity there?

Seriously, it seems they should have gone further & included moves that made use of all the nozzles.....or at least some of them.

Or heck, perhaps make it an item.

I'm not sure about Xenoblade, but Mother 3 actually had a really divisive reception in Japan that you can read about here and here.

Normally I'd understand given how its tone is drastically different from the first two games, but the way the game parallels Earthbound is, IMO, genius. I'm actually a little shocked a fan-division even exists.

That would just be Diddy Kong's recovery with a water effect. Mario's fine the way he is. They just need to buff F.L.U.D.D.

Interesting articles. I was under the impression Mother 3 was huge in Japan. Guess not, uh.

Falco, Wolf, Ike, and Snake are the only Brawl characters I can see being cut at this point.

My guess is that the Starfox franchise will stay the same. Maybe they add krystal but I don't see why they would cut falco or Wolf. Ike has a better shot of being cut then wolf or falco but I see him returning as well. I think Snake and R.O.B have the best chance of getting cut.

Yoshi
Captain Falcon
Ness
Jigglypuff
Ice Climbers
Mr. Game & Watch
Falco
Ganondorf
Wario
Meta Knight
Lucas
Diddy Kong
Pokémon Trainer
Ike
R.O.B.
Wolf
Snake

How in the world are 7 of those going to be cut?

I can easily see Snake, R.O.B., Wolf, Ike, Lucas, and Meta Knight being cut. But that doesn't necessarily mean that they won't be replaced with a similar character, like having Chrom instead of Ike.

I guess 7 is a bit much (maybe 4 or 5 would have been a wiser guess), but the roster can only get so large before balancing starts to become a serious problem, unless they limit themselves to only 10-12 new characters.

META KNIGHT?

C'mon man, there's no chance.

If there are cuts, there won't be more than 1 or 2.

I don't understand the logic behind thinking that Sakurai would choose to cut veterans to make room for newcomers. I mean, yeah, balancing becomes a bigger issue with every new character introduced, but cutting existing characters is going to upset people more than just having less newcomers than usual. Plus it's just throwing away already established characters—it's got to take less effort to bring back a veteran character than it does to introduce a brand new character.

Meta Knight is much too popular to be cut.

I think pretty much all characters will return, unless there are problems getting Snake back.

Mario is getting cut, he just doesn't know it yet.

I can't see Falco getting cut. I don't think anybody that's been in both Melee and Brawl would be cut. At most, I can see Falco being even more declonified by having a new Final Smash and maybe his Up/Side-Bs tweaked a little.

The fact that Link and Toon Link are both in the game is a clear indicator, to me at least, that Sakurai isn't going to cut "clones" just because they're "clones." His reworking of Bowser, his possible changing of Zelda's moves, everything to me shows he's more likely to make characters more unique and standout than just get rid of them.

I only say Meta Knight may get cut because of how broken he was in Brawl. It's also highly possible that Meta Knight will be radically changed to become like a new character.

I will be a tad annoyed if characters that didn't need any changes to stand out from the rest of the cast get brand new moves(i.e. Pit), while other characters that truly need complete overhauls (i.e. Ganondorf) largely remain the same.

They'll probably Nerf his ass. He really just needs tweaked priority mostly, so you can interrupt some of his BS.

There is absolutely 0% chance R.O.B. will be cut. Why would a unique character who has his own series and is not third party be cut anyway?

He's going to be replaced with a different NES accessory. I don't know what it is, but rumors are saying that it's so bad.

Mario's F.L.U.D.D would be better if he could use the other nozzles as well.

If you have FLUDD fully charged and you do the Super Jump Punch, it should activate the Rocket Nozzle. If they really wanna go crazy, they should allow him to hover like Peach by holding the jump button, which is done through the Hover Nozzle. Mario's recovery is kinda bad anyway.

If you could charge FLUDD up and have the option for improved recovery that would be interesting. Horizontal recovery with the hover and vertical with the rocket nozzle.

Squirtle really needs to lose Water gun as much as Mario needs to lose Fludd.

Water Gun can be replaced by Bubblebeam or Ice Beam.

Even better to fit with Pokemon Origins ,
Squirtle could learn Bite.

There's just no way Falco's going to be cut. He's too popular.

I think Wolf, Ike, and Lucas are the likeliest to be cut (if anyone's getting cut at all). Maybe R.O.B., but probably not.

They should just make FLUDD something you can take off/put on with a taunt. I love the buff ideas here though should you store a full charge with FLUDD.

Wolf is not getting cut. Lucas is not getting cut. Ike is really the only iffy one and even then there's more suggesting he'd stay than anything else.

The thing that really bothers me about FLUDD is that is doesn't make sense for Mario's character design in Smash Bros. He's always been the "regular" character, the one any newcomer can pick up and play to get used to the basics of the game. The "average man".

Having a weird, gimmicky move that does no damage but does knockback doesn't fit that in the slightest. Like, I like the FLUDD and the general idea behind it, but it doesn't make any sense for Mario's SSB character design. If it were up to me I'd give Mario back his Tornado and give Luigi the Poltergust or something as his Down-B, which could potentially work similarly.

I don't think Shulk's that out there. Lucas is from a JRPG that never released outside of Japan for one :P

As much as I want Shulk I don't think its fair to compare Lucas to shulk as evidence that Shulk has a great chance. Lucas was a luigi clone of Ness where as Shulk would probably be a completely original moveset. Nintendo/Sakurai would be stupid to not include him/Xenoblade/X related stuff because it has a more mature edge that Nintendo really could use a bit more of

I think Shulk has a pretty good chance. Sakurai loves those critically well-received RPGs that don't sell that great like Mother for example. Mother is actually way overrepped considering how obscure it is compared to everything else in the game, and I think Xenoblade fits this bill.

What I'd love even more than that is the main character from X instead of Shulk. a moveset centered around piloting a mech would be awesome.

I agree with this 100%, this is the main reason I think FLUDD should be dropped. It's completely incongruous with his Smash design--he's supposed to be the easy to pick up character, but he has one of the most unintuitive moves in the game.
