Little Mac doesn't absorb the hit, he does flinch, but that is a part of the counter.

The flinch seems to give time for a player to dodge it, which is not really possible for other characters with a counter.

I'm pretty sure that Little Mac just uses his roll to dodge Link's Spin Attack, then hits him with an uncharged KO Punch. The same animation can be seen when Samus attempts to hit Little Mac with her forward aerial attack; his super armor is visible in that Little Mac still takes the hit. Little Mac appears to be hit by the Spin Attack slashes, but still continues on while Link continues his attack, leading me to believe that this is his super armour KO Punch instead of a counter.

Now, when talking about Counters, he definitely uses it against Samus's forward tilt, as noted by the red "pulse" effect. He appears to take no damage either because there is no exaggerated sound/visual effect when her attack hits (like there is for super armour).

Compare this to Marth's own Counter, which uses the exact same effect except in a different colour.

His Side-B definitely includes a hop. He uses it at the very beginning of the trailer. They time it to make it look like he's kipping up from the edge of the ropes into the ring.

Also, when they explain the Power Meter, Mac slides toward Bowser and Mega Man and then strikes, which leads me to believe that his Neutral B is a chargeable dashing jab. While charging, Mac receives super armor; when the charge is unleashed, Mac does a straight dash across the field and jabs. If Mac fully charges the Power Meter, the dashing jab becomes an instant-KO uppercut.

After seeing the gifs of the entire trailer that were posted earlier, I think I can figure out most everything, except that move he uses to attack Link.

I think neutral-B is able to be charged, but does not charge indefinitely. You can charge it to dash further across the stage with more power, and accordingly experience what looks to be a pretty heavy cooldown effect. I think it has nothing to do with the meter until it changes to a powerful KO move upon the meter being full. Otherwise I bet meter is gained by landing hits in general, and not manually charged up via some kind of charge process (a la Samus or others).


The hit on Bowser in the beginning does appear to be his f-smash. The hit on the aerial opponent also looks like his u-smash (I thought it was his counter at first). Looks like all his smashes have some armor as well.


The only thing that still doesn't make any sense is wtf he's doing to Link. The only possible input I can imagine for it, is like was mentioned, it being a simple tap of neutral-B with no charge.

EDIT: And yeah it definitely is not a counter. Different animations, and it has no effects associated with the attack, which kind of goes with the uncharged neutral-B theory in that it would be less powerful.
 
I'm sure Nintendo doesn't consider them (Little Mac in the NES game, and the Green Gloved Boxer in the Arcade games) two different characters. Like "Jumpman" eventually became Mario in the Donkey Kong games. Same thing.

He has a really unique playstyle

but it looks so boring. I can't see myself playing as him very much. Obviously I won't know for sure until I get my hands on the game, but compared to the Rosalina trailer... yeah. Boring looking moveset.

Oh well. I'm happy we got something more than fucking Diddy Kong, at least. Expecting Mii at the next Direct.
 
Mac's punches look so satisfying when they land. I actually think he looks more fun than Rosalina with all the speed and super armor.
 
Here are my predictions that obviously aren’t going to pan out:

April Direct - Takamaru
June Direct - Pac-Man
August Direct - Palutena
Smash Bros. Direct (October) - Mii
November - game releases

Additional newcomers will be hidden and revealed post-launch.
 
Kind of weird to have Samus of all people make a joke about Mac's height considering that with her suit she's well over 6 feet tall, which would already be above average for a woman.

The official site lists 2/14/2014 as the date of the reveal of Little Mac, so I think the Little Mac picture is Friday's pic of the day. I wouldn't expect another. Remember, it's been Friday in Japan for a while--this just happened to be a super early update (7AM instead of like 5PM or whatever).
 
Yeah for folks on the east coast like me their japan time is like 14 hours ahead of us, which would make it like 17 hours ahead in pacific time.

Yeah, who was it who was fighting with me way back when about how there absolutely, positively would not be any cross-game stages when I suggested the Wii U version could also get an Awakening and Uprising stage?

They won't work out (like you said) because the game will probably release in June. :)
 
sorry this is late but this thread is moving so fast right now.

In response to the two gifs posted that are wondering about what the move that jumps over megaman and attacks is. I think I have found your definitive answer. As hard as it is to believe, I do believe that it is a dash attack, short hop and either the side B or his forward air (although it seems like a strong forward air if it is) the reason I believe the jump input was used is if you go to the trailer when he dashes towards the ring and then jumps into it he does the same aeriel punch right after he clears the ropes.

What if that jump punch towards megaman involved mac running, jumping, dodging, and punching right when the frame ends?

I mean, we see from his rolls that his invincibility frames are extremely short, so it's entirely possible that his air dodge frames could be really short as well.

Couple this with the fact that momentum seems to be conserved in smash 4 and that makes that maneuver much more epic.

Nah.

He does it at the beginning to "jump" into the ring, too. It's just a side-B.
