Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

All I hope for is Captain Falcon getting the same love. Lil Mac shows the team is embracing offensive based characters that are fast, so I hope Falcon gets all the stuff he lost from Brawl and then some added flair (make knee/Falcon Punch look more ridiculous pls).

But alas, he'll probably just have the same move set and the only thing that'll make him better are the engine changes (which is really what hurt Falcon in Brawl, fyi a lot of his moves retained the same stats as Melee, the issue was he couldn't do a lot of the same shit because of the engine changes they made). Which would be well and good but if Mac can do all this shit, then why would anyone pick Falcon over him? Well... I guess he would be better in the air but still lol.

Just make Falcon cooler, he's literally the posterchild/face of Smash, IMO.

I added Ridley, because I figure at this point anything's possible. Little Mac proves that Sakurai cares about the West.

I actually like your roster with two exceptions.

Remove Zoroark and add Shulk.
Merge Diddy and Dixie and make them a tag team and add Tharja.

This would make probably my favorite Smash Bros roster ever.

Taking Brawl's roster, 19 - Diddy, Yoshi, Wario, Sheik, Ganondorf, G&W, Ice Climbers, ROB, Zero Suit Samus, Meta Knight, Falco, Wolf, Captain Falcon, Jigglypuff, Pokemon Trainer, Ike, Ness, Lucas and Snake.

Didn't count the individual Pokemon as independent characters since they likely aren't going to be revealed individually, but Sheik and Zero Suit might be.

So 21 characters to go (Including separate pokemons) + 23 confirmed characters + 2 leaked characters = 46 characters. I don't think they will stopped at 7 newcomers, so we might get other 3-8 newcomers as well. 49 to 54 characters.

That's only if all returning characters came back.

Are there any characters you guys are okay with NOT returning?

While there are characters I don't care for, any character cut is a huge loss because it's the loss of a playstyle and what they brought to the table. Bring back as many as possible (if not all of them) and then add in 10 newcomers and I'm fine.

Character roster is the least of my worries though, tbh. I'm concerned about online multiplayer (the options, whether it has good netcode, if there will be lobbies or if it's random matchmaking under a set rule by the development team, etc) and how the game plays. Neither of which we are going to get to know about until after E3 (hell maybe not even until the game comes out).

So, I would be upset at any character loss -- varying degrees of upset, though. Like if Lucario didn't return, I would feel mixed.

I guess I wouldn't care if ROB didn't return, though. Especially because they wouldn't give him air dashes like he has in Project M (I mean COME ON IT MAKES SENSE THAT HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO USE HIS JET THING AS A BOOSTER).

If someone had to go, Ganondorf. Not because I don't like his playstyle (though I don't), but more because he doesn't represent any real incarnation of Ganondorf and if we're going to have a slow Captain Falcon it ought to be an F-Zero character.

It's probably been mentioned before, but I think this is a nice homage.

Little Mac's HUD and flashing K.O. graphic are taken from the original arcade Punch-Out!!, but the meter's color progression seems inspired by the SNES Super Punch-Out!!.

Yeah, that was cool homage. It's awesome to see that Sakurai finally pay the respect to Punch Out Franchise, and all players finally able to play as Little Mac in Smash where he belong to.

Does anyone know the difference in terms of move sets between Toon Link and Link?

I guess Toon Link will be exactly same as he is in Brawl, so only few different moves.

Ganondorf is almost identical to his TP counterpart, in appearance. All the Zelda characters are modeled after their TP, selves.

I like this roster a lot. Not sure about Takamaru and Zoroark though. And Chrom > Ike, probably. And Ridley is still too big. Other than that, cool.

I wasn't talking about appearance, since that's always been spot on.

Gotcha. The same can really be said for all the characters, though. No one is truly one specific version of a character. They are all mishmash of whom they are, and what is most popular and liked about all their various games, into one glorious package.

Snake. For him it's more than "I'd be okay with it," and rather "I actively want him out." Just does not make sense. A couple NES Metal Gears and Twin Snakes does not justify his inclusion. Which is part of why I don't want Pac Man in there either, he has no strong Nintendo association. Mega Man I'm okay with because he grew up on the NES and SNES across a vast array of games, and was kind of an iconic character for the systems along with Nintendo's own titles. Sonic I'm okay with because it's a "rivals" fighting game and there is no truer rival to Mario than Sonic, with the whole SNES/Genesis war. But Snake? Totally outta place.

I wouldn't mind losing Lucas, too. I'm just not particularly interested in him.

And swap Ike for Chrom.

Does anyone know the difference in terms of move sets between Toon Link and Link?

Only differences: aerials (except Up Air and Down Air) and Up Smash. That's it. None of his specials are that different from Link (they're the same projectiles etc but have slightly different stats and such). I doubt very much they've changed any of that (excluding potential buffs).

I'd be fine with either Falco or Wolf not returning (preferably Falco, since Wolf is much more unique). I also wouldn't miss ROB at all. and I guess I could accept Snake not returning due to the 3rd party deal. I guess losing Lucas wouldn't bother me much either.

Ike being dropped if Chrom basically replaces him also wouldn't bother me, but it'd be a boring choice for an Awakening representative (Avatar, please!).

Okay, I only asked because Toon Link used to be my go to, but as I am now 19 I am planning on transitioning to the full grown man link haha.

I dunno, the specials seem pretty different to me. I mean yeah they're the "same," but the effects are very different. Boomerang vs Gale Boomerang, Toon Link's bomb and spin attack are multi-hitters instead of one-hit knockback moves (unless it's the other way around, I forget). Arrows are pretty similar tho sure.

Which is fine for the likes of Zelda and Link, and with Fox and Captain Falcon you do get the feeling of "an arwing on foot" or "a humanoid racecar," but Ganondorf doesn't really adhere to that mold. I was glad to see him get small tweaks in Brawl to make him more like his TP incarnation with the shadow choke and whatnot, but it wasn't enough for my tastes.

But my opinion is invalid cause I'm just a dirty casual who wants 18 Kirby characters~

Order you want to play the newcomers?

From first to last

Mega man
Little Mac
Rosalina
Villager
WFT

1) Little Mac
2) Wii Fit Trainer
3) Mega Man
4) Villager
5) Rosalina

I've never really been a "tricky" player, and I'm not really looking forward to Rosalina as she seems like she'll take a lot of practice to get even moderately good at. Mac looks great to me because he encourages taking the fight to the enemy, which has always been my preference.

If we're talking about "feeling", the whole powerful but slow moveset kind of fits OoT and TP Ganondorf, but, of course, the actual attacks aside from the choke have little in common with his attacks in the Zelda games. And, additionally, in Brawl he basically is just slow, and not really powerful.

The Samus thing was a throwback to the Dojo:

As you can see, for the Little Mac AT they did the same joke.

Guess tonight's pic will probably be about Little Mac, maybe mentioning how the boxing ring is the Punch-Out stage.

It makes me wonder what happens to Diddy. Maybe he'll be a secret character this time around?

Wow, deep cut by Sakurai.

Also, this image really makes me appreciate how far the visuals have come since the last installment.

Are there any characters you guys are okay with NOT returning?

The topic always eventually devolves into this so theres no reason to ask this
I wont be ok with anyone not returning by the way.

Im surprised smashgaf hasent been talking about the HUD at the bottom of the screen that seems to be finalized, its looking slick and colorful.

Yea, the visuals have come an incredibly long way. Even still, Little Mac (and most non character models) were very low poly quickie jobs, next to the playable characters in Brawl.

He looks like 10 times younger, now.

I dunno, there's more than a few characters I'd be okay with seeing go. I don't think we need Wolf AND Falco, so one of them going would be fine. Toon Link and Lucario both could have gone without me being too disappointed. Ike isn't a necessity for me. Lucas, Snake, Sheik, and Zero Suit Samus, too. And of the Melee characters the only one I'd be disappointed to not see return is Mewtwo.

As long as the roster is reasonably sized, I don't really care what characters return. Wolf is easily my favorite Star Fox character and Snake is super cool, and I vaster prefer Toon Link to regular Link, but, like, I dunno, individual characters aren't a big deal to me as long as the overall landscape is rich enough.

However, practically speaking, it'd a lot easier to bring in veterans than it is to bring in newcomers, I think. So I'm hoping we can manage to get every Veteran back, if possible... except Young Link. And maybe Pichu. But I'd like to see Pichu come back too.

In order of the newcomers I want to try:
Mega Man (will be my main with Mario. My 2 favorite videogame icons of all time)
Little Mac
Rosalina
Villager and WFT tied for last.

That's what I meant by stats and etc.
