Yea, the visuals have come an incredibly long way. Even still, Little Mac (and most non character models) were very low poly quickie jobs, next to the playable characters in Brawl.
You really doubted Sakurai would include Little Mac? He seemed like one of the most obvious additions (and I don't mean to sound condescending with that comment). What's surprising about Little Mac is his "Mahvel-esque" implementation, I.E. super meter, super armor, etc. He looks great!
Ridley certainly seems possible. It really all comes down to whether Sakurai is willing to "redefine" him in terms of size, relative to how he's appeared in past Smash titles. And Sakurai can change the rules of his own game at a moment's notice (as we see with how he changed his mind on Villager between Brawl and SSB4), so anything's possible. Ridley's definitely deserving, though -- a truly unique character, which is what Sakurai loves, and another Metroid rep, another villain rep, an iconic bit of imagery, etc. Ridley could be the "air game" to Little Mac's "ground game."
Here's hoping they bring him in. Heck, just reskin Firebrand from UMvC3 and make him slightly larger than Bowser with no hitbox on his tail and wings (except for when used as an attack).
I actually hope they bring in Waluigi and maybe even Daisy (although she's pretty unlikely).
If not Ridley I can't think of any other character they can bring in from Metroid - Adam Malkovich maybe? LOL
I've gone back and forth on Little Mac for a while. I mean, he was my third most wanted newcomer after Villager and Mega Man, and I wasn't shocked to see him confirmed yesterday, but I really didn't think he was as much of a shoo-in as everyone else did. He's one of those characters who could've gone either way without surprising me.
I figured a few assist trophies were the most likely candidates because they have had to have thought about their potential as a playable character while creating the trophy. In particular, Little Mac, Isaac, Saki, Ray MK, and Waluigi all had playable potential. I'm sure they even thought about Advanced Wars or Excitebike for playable reps at some point during brainstorming/planning phases.

I understand. Now that he's confirmed, do you like what you see?
On another note, in terms of other newcomers:
- I've expected Mii and Pac-Man since E3, due to the "leak." I look forward to both of them. If it turns out they're NOT in, for whatever reason, fine... but I think they can (and will be) a lot of fun. I'd like for Mii to let you use the Miis on your system, and for Pac-Man to wakka-wakka through the air, like an airborne version of Yoshi's Egg Roll but able to turn on a moment's notice and move up and down.
- For Zelda, I can see them adding Toon Zelda (with Toon Sheik, as was planned for Brawl, or with Tetra, preferably), and I can also see them adding Impa circa Skyward Sword -- the latter would be cool, especially if she incorporated her two forms from SS. Impa is a recurring character in the Zelda series, and Toon Zelda has appeared in Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Minish Cap, Four Swords Adventures, etc. Both are definitely deserving.
- For Fire Emblem... I have no idea. I loved Fire Emblem Awakening so much that it's difficult to pick between Chrom and Lucina. A dual Chrom & Lucina character that represents Awakening's Pair Up mechanic and time-traveling premise would be great. It's hard to picture, since Chrom and Lucina are roughly the same size, but perhaps the two characters wouldn't have to be on the field at the same time, or if they were, perhaps they could be in different planes (I.E. Lucina follows along on the same plane as Pokémon Trainer, and you can switch between the two).
- For Pokémon, I'm hoping to see Mewtwo come back. If the Mega Evolutions are in, I'd imagine both Mewtwo and Lucario would receive them as Final Smashes, though the idea that Lucario might activate his with enough Aura is an interesting one. Some say the Megas would be sufficient to represent Gen VI, but I do like the idea of Sylveon as a Gen VI rep, a new quadraped character, a Fairy-type (beyond Jigglypuff), and one who can conveniently grapple, use items and hang from ledges with her "flesh-ribbons." She was one of the earliest Gen VI Pokémon shown, and the most marketed outside of Xerneas, Yveltal and the starters.
- For Kid Icarus, I'm inclined to believe the Palutena leak was legit. The fact Palutena's Temple is the WiiU stage, and in Uprising this was the level where
Palutena fought Pit in combat
, means Sakurai is already thinking back to her abilities. She's such a perfect fit in every way -- the namesake of the series in Japan, the second most important character in Uprising after Pit himself, and a heavily marketed character in the promotion to that game (three anime shorts, a parade float in Japan, interior art on the case, etc). She's also a green-haired goddess with a staff, shield and magical powers -- it's just too perfect.
- For Metroid, I'd love to see Ridley, but like Ryce with Little Mac, I can see it going either way.
- For Donkey Kong, I'd really like to see Diddy & Dixie as a hybrid veteran/newcomer.
- For Yoshi, I'd really like to see Yoshi & Baby Mario, with a baby retrieval mechanic where when you have the baby, your attacks are doubled and powered-up, but when you're hit hard enough, the baby floats away and you have to retrieve him in order to have your full attack power.
- Takamaru really would be a great "retro reimagined" character. The fact that Mysterious Murasame Castle has been rated for the West by Australia's equivalent of the ESRB means it's coming to English-speaking territories. Imagine if they timed its Virtual Console release with the announcement of Takamaru in Smash? Doubly appropriate after his Nintendo Land attraction. And he's one of the "Famicon Four" -- Zelda, Murasame, Metroid and Kid Icarus.
The above is hardly a definitive list, but just some ideas of what I might expect.
Toon Link was the only character I was hoping would either get cut or completely revamped.
There's a few more which I don't really care about too much, but it would be a shame losing them (Lucas, Falco, and such).
I actually like Snake, and especially like the uniqueness of his moveset, so I hope that if Snake gets the boot, his moveset is inherited by somebody else.
And Sakurai can change the rules of his own game at a moment's notice (as we see with how he changed his mind on Villager between Brawl and SSB4), so anything's possible.
I also wanna say he mentioned somewhere that he thought Little Mac was not a good Smash character because he only punches (don't quote me on that though, but I'm fairly certain he said that). And well, here we are. lol
While I wouldn't be inherently opposed to Waluigi, I don't think he's gonna get in solely based on the fact that Rosalina made it. I have my doubts Mario is going to get 2 new characters, though who knows.
He always felt like a slow Cpt. Falcon clone to me, but I never got that familiar with him. I really liked people's earlier suggestions about having him be WW Ganondorf with the swords, or giving him some of the magic from OoT.
Also, why isn't his Final Smash attack to transform into Ganon???
Oh man... do we still have Final Smash attacks? I've never thought to ask...

Uh, yes, the initial trailer showed Samus' big gun, and we got the Final Smashes for Wii Fit Trainer and Little Mac in their respective trailers, as well as the Smash Ball in Villager's promotional poster.
With Waluigi, I wonder how they would handle his icon. I imagine his Assist Trophy had the Mario Mushroom icon in Brawl, correct? It'd just feel weird if that's how his playable character was classified in SSB4. At the same time, you can't really give him the Wario "W" since he hasn't appeared in a Wario-branded game (to my knowledge)...
They should make Waluigi a Waluigi rep as some sort of troll. I imagine home taking his upside down L and taping it over the top of the Mario mushroom icon in the trailer. "It's Waluigi time! Wawawaaaaaaaaa!"

Yes, his assist trophy had the Mario icon, and the collectible trophy was filed under the Mario series, not Wario. And correct, Waluigi has not appeared in any game of either Wario series.

Random thought. Notice that we've only seen the "WARNING! CHALLENGER APPROACHING!" for Mega Man? I can't help but feel that we won't see that again until E3, where (this is just a prediction) Mii and Pac-Man will be revealed.
You know, I find the Galaxy stage quite lame (specially with all the crazy levels with could have been used). If it's only that then it's disappointing.
I was hoping Lucario wouldn't return. Also was hoping that Toon Link would have been completely changed to include his more unique items from his games. Sad that neither of these seemed to have happened.
Still hoping that Falco or Wolf get cut or completely reworked.
I will never understand this mentality. Why would you WANT any characters to be cut/not return? All it does is screw over fans of those characters. There is literally no positive side to it.

Same here. I would rather to see everyone coming back to SSB4, but Sakurai said that he will try to bring everyone as possible as he can. With current situation with Sakurai, I'm not sure anymore.
Also, as someone mentioned in previous pages, I want to point out my statement if all characters actually returned.
21 characters to go (Including separate pokemons) + 23 confirmed characters + 2 leaked characters = 46 characters. I don't think they will stopped at 7 newcomers, so we might get other 3-8 newcomers as well. 49 to 54 characters.

As much as people want to believe slots don't exist, developing characters takes time. So when time isn't put into a character you don't care for, there's a chance another character you do care for will get that time.
It has nothing to do with wanting to screw someone over, it's just that they can't put every character that everyone wants in.

My thought process is to have characters that are actually relevant at the time the game comes out, important to their franchises or to Nintendo's history. Lucario doesn't really fit any of those added on to the fact that I personally don't care for him and would rather have a more meaningful pokemon representative who could provide a newer more unique experience.
The same goes for Toon Link who should have had his own unique items and not the recycled boomerang, bomb, etc. And Wolf and Falco as well. I'm not going to get into a clone debate in this thread, but my point of view is that.
Just like there are fans of those characters there are people who don't like them and wouldn't mind seeing them either replaced by new ones or completely reworked.
