Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Having a 'Do Not Want List' is very fair honestly. It isn't like characters are free, they take considerable development resources. I look at like less like a 'no characters!' list and more like a 'I'd rather them use resources on something else' list.

The only character I honestly don't want at this point is Waluigi, and I like Waluigi but this game already has a Mario newcomer and a staggering 5 Mario characters, 7 if you count Wario and Yoshi. Nothing Waluigi could do couldn't be covered by Mii or Villager

I don't have a "do not want" list, however one character whom I am completely indifferent to is Roy. Just don't give a crap if he's back or not.

well, I suppose I could add Young Link to the list, but only because we already have Toon Link.

Thank you very much neo! I called him months back, hopefully no one minds if I use it :3

Little Mac is my favorite and I have numerous world records for fights in Punch-Out Wii!!

So far.
OMG, loner Purple Pikmin looks like it wants revenge on the world.

I think Lucario gets a lot of hate because he's from a recent, relatively young series.

But to put it in perspective, just because he wasn't around since RBY doesn't mean he's somewhat unqualified to be part of Smash. In a way he's like Wario or Yoshi, came in later in his respective series, but proved to be popular.

No, he gets hate even from fans who don't glorify RBY because of how much he was forced down throats in Gens 4 & 6, how he's designed to make the player feel super special (like how the Lucario in XY "chooses" you), he got a mega evolution even though he was already powerful, and the obvious furbait.

You guys think we'll see a Steel Diver level in the 3DS Version?

Like taking place in the ocean, with perhaps the submarine being the main platform? Like it's a really big platform at first, but then it submerges leaving only the top half above the water for a smaller platform?

And maybe the Nautilus or whatever can also reach out of the ocean and grab characters who dick around too long in the water.

Oh yeah, can I claim the obscure SNES character Tin Star?

I can feel it in my bones. Assist Trophy at least.

On characters I don't want, the only one is Waluigi. But I feel like if they gave him a decent moveset, I wouldn't care in the end. I'd just use him as a punching bag because I can't stand him and don't think he deserves the fine Smash Bros. air before others.

If I was forced to make cuts though- Snake, Wolf, and ROB would be on the chopping block.

There are no characters that I do not want in the game, just characters that I would not be surprised if they were not included. I play every character with an emphasis on Random so with more characters that hopefully means more variety per game.

After watching the footage a bunch more, I'm pretty certain I've figured out how Little Mac's Power Meter works.

You gain one notch with each hit that lands and with each hit absorbed through super armor, but you likely also lose one notch with each hit that you take (like in the Punch-Out!! games). When you make it to 10 notches you press B for a one-hit-kill uppercut.

I don't want anyone who was in brawl cut. It wouldn't bother me though if R.O.B didn't comeback.

As far as newcomers I don't really have a "don't want list." I'll just beat the shit out of newcomers I hate when the game comes out.
That means you Waluigi.

Yeah, wanting fighters cut is pretty silly. Like someone said, there's really no reason to actually want someone cut.

Now, on the subject of who I would want in, I'ma just focus on another character from the punch out universe, though I know Little Mac is probably going to be the only representative for the franchise.

If I could get another, I'd have to say I'd wanted either Doc Louis or Great Tiger. Louis is a no brainer, and Great Tiger would be cool because of the possible moves he could have, what with his teleporting and such, I think he would have some interesting tactics.

Though I guess since Punch Out Wii exists, it actually does have 2 fighters now, Little Mac and Donkey Kong :3

I think King Hippo or Mr. Sandman are pretty much the only choices for another Punch-Out!! rep, and both are longshots. Either would be cool to have, though, and I'm hoping we get a boss or an Assist Trophy at least.

Personally I'd like to see Mike Tyson but THAT is longshot!

even if Sakurai flat out said there were 50 characters in the game, some people here would still deny it
not worth arguing that

If Sakurai flat out said how many characters there are in the game, unless they are really close to release date, then he would be stupid.
When developing a game like this, you shoot for an approximate amount of characters, and see how much you can get finished. If you promise 50 characters but can only finish 47 by the time the deadline comes around, you're going to disappoint people. And especially with a game franchise as popular and beloved as Smash, this would be much more significant.

Development of a fighting game roster is much more fluid than people think. The "slots" aren't hard numbers.

I kind of wish the trailer in the Direct hadn't started up with the Smash logo fire thing. Would have made the Sandbag reveal that much more amazing.

50 characters would be impressive, but I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility or anything like that. Games like Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 contain 50+ characters.

The veterans in this game are reusing their Brawl animations (with the exception of a handful of new attacks), so that’s a big time saver. Characters were remade almost entirely during the jump from Melee to Brawl — most animations were cleaned up, smash attacks were given “wind-up” motions, Final Smashes were added, characters were given two more taunts, intro animations returned, crawling and gliding were added, etc. — but that doesn’t appear to be the case here.

I’m not saying it’s easy to “port” characters over from Brawl, but it’s a much less involved process than before.

I think it is impressive how much advanced fighting game tech Sakurai is adding this time around. Smash games have always had advanced gameplay, but the character designs have been simple and oriented around fundamentals, save a few like Ice Climbers. Now we have a stand character and someone who can zip through projectiles.

I wonder if, and hope that, older characters will get serious revamps to give them more depth of playstyle.

well if you choose to believe there'd be less characters, then whatever

I think Sakurai pretty much said they were in a recent interview.

That's great! I'm really excited to see what sort of things they'll come up with for the next newcomers.

In terms of amount of characters, I'd love if they reached 50. That's a pretty good number, I think.

50 sounds great, but I guess it depends on how much space they have left to work with on the 3DS cartridge.

I agreed. I think ports of Brawl animations and contents would make it easier for Namco-Bandai teams to work on. All they have to do is making new models, and trying to make the animations work on their bones. So they can adjust from there, and they still have time to make a lot of amazing facial expressions as we seeing in daily images.

I have a good feeling that we might reach to 50 characters since you can look at what we have now.

23 characters that are confirmed
2 leaked characters that are more likely to happen
21 veteran characters that haven't got revealed yet.

So I'm pretty sure that we wouldn't stopped at 7 newcomers, so I'm hoping to see 3-8 more newcomers.

I agreed with you, and I really hope that they would add more flavors to veterans because Rosalina, Mega Man, Villager and Little Mac added so much flavors to the game and making the veterans look pale in comparison.

I don't think 3DS Cartridge is the issue.

The only reason that I am for a few characters being cut is because I would much rather prefer new characters to veterans. With the storage problems Sakurai says the 3DS version may have, I don't think that they will be able to easily give us the 50+ characters that we want. If I knew that storage and balancing was not an issue, than obviously I would want Sakurai to keep all 35 Brawl members along with 1 or 2 veterans that were cut from Melee.

Brawl was a massive game, and I doubt the development team would want Smash 4 to be smaller than Brawl. Maybe they would include 50+ characters if the 3DS game has considerably less content overall, but I'm just not sure.

if anyone wants to call dibs on the Dixie Kong avatar, feel free to do so (not my call anyway). I'll hold onto Tetra and Krystal though (#believe)

Wasn't Brawl already about 8 GB? I think that's how much a 3DS cartridge can store. I could be wrong though.

But that was probably more so due to all the Subspace cutscenes, music, etc.

I imagine the 3DS Version will probably cut back on music, maybe go back to the "two songs per level" set-up of Melee. I wouldn't really mind though as that increases the chances of all the music being solid instead of filler junk like Brawl had quite a bit of.
