Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Would fit well for a Rhythm Heaven character because that game is all about timing to the beat of music. That or Ouendan, but I think the best shot they have is AT.

I have to agree. Only music based characters I could imagine are from Rhythm Heaven, Quendan or Jimmy T.

I will honestly be surprised if either Impa or Tingle get in. I just don't think it'll happen. Zelda already has a ton of reps and no one is itching for either of those characters to get in.

It's one part Mario series breaking the floodgates/preconceived "slot" notions and one part lobbying for "additionals" that would bulk the roster up while being unique really. That being said, SS put an awful lot of importance on both Impa within the game and Impa as a lineage of characters, so she isn't too outlandish anymore.

@Alberto: I think Tye's referencing that patent/Australian rating registry for Murasame Castle that happened a few months ago.

That Murasame Castle classification is old news from a few months back. Yet we still haven't seen it. :-\

It's why I've been saying it seems like a Takamaru-in-Smash setup, if they time it right. :)

For some reason I get the feeling that Takamaru will be a hidden character, so we may not see him until after the game releases. I have the same feeling about Mewtwo and Ridley. If they're in, I think they'll be hidden, if that's still a thing. Other potential newcomers I'm not too sure about, but those three just really feel like they'd be hidden characters to me.

I wonder how many more newcomers will be revealed before release... I feel like we could end up with just Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Rosalina & Luma, Little Mac, Mii, and Palutena as starter newcomers (plus Mega Man and Pac-Man as hidden third-party characters that were revealed before release, of course). Maybe one or two more, but I'm not sure who it would be.

You know what, I'll just go down the list of newcomers from my roster and list what I think their status on the roster will be if they make it in:

Dixie Kong: Starter or Hidden
King K. Rool: Hidden
Impa: Hidden
Tingle: Hidden
Ridley: Hidden
Palutena: Starter
Mewtwo: Hidden
Robin: Starter or Hidden
Isaac: Hidden
Shulk: Starter or Hidden
The Wonderful 100: Starter or Hidden
Takamaru: Hidden
Pac-Man: Hidden (but revealed before release)
Mii: Starter

He'd make a great retro character like Ice Climbers, Mr. Game & Watch, Pit, and R.O.B. before him. We're kinda running low on options for good retro characters, too. Takamaru is a popular (at least in Japan) and somewhat relevant (thanks to Samurai Warriors 3, Nintendo Land, and the expected localized release of his Famicom game) character who has a lot of potential for Smash Bros.

Takamaru is one of the few potential newcomers that I absolutely 100% expect. The others are all leaks (Palutena, Mii, Pac-Man—previously Little Mac, too) and Mewtwo (if he even counts, lol). He's just such an obvious choice at this point.

There's also a few translations around the internet of a Questionnaire with Sakurai (around Melee's development time?). Sakurai said he'd basically consider Takamaru if he was in more games.

Takamaru hasn't actually been in his own game ever since, but he has seen a GBA + VC rerelease, his own minigame in Nintendoland and appearances in Samurai Warriors 3 + Captain Rainbow. Whether or not that is good enough to appear as a representative is something I don't know. :(

I need to see that Maximilian breakdown when I finish this work...

About the hidden characters it doesn't really matter, I remember that with Brawl spoilers where everywhere xD

But it even 1 remains hidden that would be a good surprise.

Max's (aka LeMaximilian on here) breakdown of Mac. Mac is still hype as shit.

I'm guessing this was covered already, but one thing I didn't notice before is that Bowser is at 39% before they zoom in on the K.O meter and then is at 231% before he gets hit by Mac's attack. Seems like they just fast forwarded that part a ton, and I'm thinking that the k.o attack might not be that powerful or that it might only trigger if an opponent is at a certain percentage.

Well, Takamaru may not have gotten a new game exactly, but he's got just about as much attention as Little Mac has, if not more, and look who just got in. Little Mac got a new game, yeah, but aside from that Punch-Out!! hasn't really gotten much attention at all outside of Virtual Console releases and Little Mac's appearance in Captain Rainbow. The Mysterious Murasame Castle also had a Virtual Console release and Takamaru's appearance in Captain Rainbow, plus Takamaru also had a full mode dedicated to his game in Samurai Warriors 3 and his own attraction in Nintendo Land, and there's the expected release of his game outside of Japan for the first time ever.

Sakurai also made a comment about being in an extremely fortunate position to revive old characters or something along those lines, and what other characters can he really do this with to the extent he did it with, say, Pit in Brawl? Takamaru's really the only character that comes to mind that seems within the realm of possibility.

I think Takamaru is a pretty safe bet.

They're some of the characters I'm expecting the least in my roster, but I do feel like we might be getting one more Zelda newcomer. In the event that that happens, I can't see it being anyone other than Impa or Tingle. We could very well end up getting no Zelda newcomers, though.

Really? I would think Ghirahim would have a higher chance than Impa.

Here's my updated roster with Little Mac's confirmation:

I've also added Isaac as an alternate option to Robin just for the hell of it. I wanted to include Isaac in the roster from the beginning but I couldn't find the room for him and he was my least expected newcomer, so I just left him out before; now that I removed Chrom as an alternate choice to Robin, and since Robin and Isaac are both sword-wielding magic users, I figured I could lump them together.

The Wonderful 101's sales shouldn't matter at all. The roster would have been planned out before The Wonderful 101 was even released. And characters aren't just put into Smash Bros. for promotion, you know. Also, the fact that a The Wonderful 101 character wasn't revealed around the release of The Wonderful 101 doesn't mean it's not going to happen. You could say that the release of Pokémon X and Pokémon Y was the optimal time to reveal a new or returning Pokémon character (Pokémon Trainer, Lucario, Mewtwo, or Jigglypuff would have all been pretty relevant), yet we got nothing.

Needs more villans.

Hero vs hero is boring

Hero vs hero is boring

Nintendo doesn't have that many cool villains and they have already ruled out adding possibly their best one (majora). Hopefully at least ganondorf gets done over instead of being a clone. He has been in plenty of games so they have plenty of options.

Also, it'll likely be either Ness OR Lucas. Probably not both... unfortunately. :(

I'd be disappointed if characters got dropped like that. They've already done the work and made movesets for the characters, it makes sense to take advantage of that.

Why not? Toon Link got in, what's stopping them from keeping both Lucas and Ness?

True... I'm a huge Earthbound fan so I'm all for both. I played as Ness in 64 and Melee and in Brawl I played as Lucas.

The new one... I have broader choice of characters I actually enjoy compared to the other Smash Bros game. Each with their own completely different playstyle no less! I hope they do the same with Link/Toon Link, Mario/Luigi by making them stand out with all of their moves.

I predict there will be only one cut from the Brawl roster, if any, with only one out of the four Melee cuts having a chance of returning.

If I need to spell it out for you.

I absolutely love the model for Little Mac. Looks great, especially the gloves. Hell, even the 3DS version looks pretty nice.

So of the remaining Brawl assist trophies which do you think has a real chance at being bumped up to full fighter like Little Mac?

I think Little Mac is the only character from the Brawl ATs that is going to make it into Smash 4 as playable. The only other character with a remote chance is Tingle, because he's the next most-important Zelda character, and has his own spin-off series. His chances sunk with Impa being on the rise, but even then both characters seem incredibly unlikely.

A pick I've seen tossed around a bit is Rainman, which would be representative of the Hanafuda cards Nintendo made before it made video games. It's about as far back in Nintendo's history as you can get, and even though it wouldn't be a video game character, I still think it's a very unique pick to represent Nintendo's past.

I would love to see some reference to Nintendo's card game period.

There are a ton of angles to consider this from. That is why it is not guessable. TW101 is a new IP, and it is Nintendo, but it is also out and it flopped. Economically, it makes more sense to promo a highly desirable character for a game that is releasing within 6 months of Smash than it does to promote something in the bargain bin.

The optimal time for a TW101 reveal has also passed.

Bayonetta has a set of excellent and unique moves to offer as well. Both would be great for gameplay.

Sega owns Bayonetta, but no one would think of it as Sega representation. No one thinks of Platinum Games as Sega. There was a three game contract between them. That is all. Kamiya has a huge fan following, and people look at her as a Kamiya character.

Snake didn't fit Smash at all visually. Bayonetta fits more than he does.

Bayonetta also helps provide more female options, something Sakurai cares about this time around.

Likely, neither character will be in. I think the better choice is Bayonetta, though.

I agree with this assessment.

But she would be Sega representation regardless. I wouldn't mind seeing Bayonetta in, I've established that, but the W101 would be the better choice as they're actually a Nintendo IP. Also, not all of the Smash characters sell well. In fact, Fire Emblem was on the verge of being phased out if it weren't for Awakening.

I don't think "Sega representation" really matters. It's characters Sakurai likes, and characters Nintendo wants to push (Rosalina).
Fire Emblem might've been on the verge of dying out, but here's the difference between W101 and FE - the FE series has been a long-standing Japan-only series with a history of multiple games and a big fan following in Japan, while W101 is a new franchise that sold fairly poorly.

Now, I would lovelovelove W101 get a playable character in Smash, but just from a popularity standpoint, Bayonetta is the significantly more likely Kamiya character choice.

Personally, I would like both Bayonetta AND W101 get a character in Smash.

Aside from Wii Fit Trainer, I think most of those are safe guesses, actually.

But Wii Fit Trainer is definitely the one that makes you sit up and go "Wait, really?"

Wii Fit Trainer did make me go that, but in retrospect, she just makes so much sense.

Hopefully he just considered Palutena to be likely...

What about Rosalina? Why wasn't she on that list?

Well that post was supposed to say what gets revealed at E3, not all newcomers. He obviously was wrong about getting revealed at E3, but you know how it is with PR decisions.

I am glad little mac is for the supporters but why is he wanted so much? punch out is fun but little mac never stood out as a character to me.

Speaking solely for myself, I don't have much attachment to either Little Mac or Punchout as a whole, but I'm super stoked to see him in the game if only cause he's an actual GOOD new character in a long time. To be honest, I've been fairly disappointed with most of the new characters revealed up until now.

- Wii Fit Girl: Didn't care for Wii Fit at all so wasn't really stoked about her addition. Plus she doesn't seem to mesh well with SSB.
- Rosalina/Luma: I'm not opposed to them, but not terribly excited either. But it was probably either Rosalina or Daisy, so there's that at least.
- Villager: Of all the characters you could pick from AC, you pick this random dude? Why not Tom Nook or J.J. Slider?

But Little Mac works great since he's a classic Nintendo character, looks cool, and seems to have some awesome fucking attacks.

Yeah, his 3DS model is brilliant too.

Portable Smash is gonna be so good.

Quit foolin' around out there, Smash ain't no joke!

Well the Rhythm Tengoku series did get a picture panel in Street Pass and also
a hat
. Some more "established" games haven't received that kind of treatment.

Also eady prediction of the day, if Pacman gets in, the ghosts will be assist trophies. Though I still like my Xevious idea.

- Villager: Of all the characters you could pick from AC, you pick this random dude? Why not Tom Nook or J.J. Slider?
Random? It's the character you play as, the one that is on screen 99% of the time! The one that actually has a lot of moves to be inspired by.

One thing I've been confused about for awhile: why all the vicious Pac-Man hate? Whenever the discussion turns to Pac-Man probably getting in, it's almost always immediately followed by various posts like "god no, anyone but Pac-Man" and "I'll be fine as long as fucking PAC-MAN doesn't get in."

I don't understand. I'm not a giant Pac-Man fan or anything, but what would be so bad about him being in the roster? If you add him, you've arguably got every major, important legacy gaming mascot in one game together (Mario, Sonic, Mega Man, Pac-Man). I think that's pretty neat myself.

Is it just his new/modern "Ghostly Adventures" redesign people don't like? I mean, yeah, it's a little goofy-looking, but it worked in Street Fighter X Tekken precisely because it was so weird and a little creepy. I can see it working in Smash in much the same capacity. It can't be because he's not "suited to a fighting game" or whatever, because Smash has had/will have plenty of those characters already. So what's the deal?

Ghostly Adventures Pac Man pisses me off.

Ive actually been meaning to ask this for a while.

I'm going to guess that some feel threatened about their favorite Namco character not getting in

TBH, I feel Pac-man is the perfect fit for the roster as a Namco rep.

Okay, I can see people feeling threatened by Pac-Man if they want someone like Lloyd, Yuri, or Klonoa in, but come on... none of those characters were ever going to make it into Smash anyway, least of all any Tales characters. Pac-Man has no bearing on that either way.

I would lose my shit if Klonoa was announced, though. In a very good way.

18th is approaching in three weeks and still cannot decide if I want a Wii U.

Man, I need to see some stabilisation before I ask for one. :(

Edit: Two weeks.

I'm debating whether it's worth the dive for Smash or not. Hard decision to make since I primarily would like Smash 3DS. But Mario Kart 8... decisions decisions.

Yeah I agree with you. Even if Pac-Man doesn't even get in, I can't see any of those get in regardless.

Judging by your posts...you don't want one. Your fixation on the 3DS version of Smash actually is a bit terrifying D:

Oi. :P

I just like the portable aspect of it all. I'm not saying it'll be better than it would be on Wii U, that'll never be the case.

Fixation though

So I hadn't watched the reveal trailer in awhile. After hearing the song a few times I resized it sounds like something out of Soul Calibur II. I wonder if someone from Namco is working as the primary arranger for the main theme, menus, etc.
